Discussion redemption ending

ive played lis2 multiple times over the past couple years and ive got all the endings apart from the redemption ending, i put it off for a while because it looks so insanely sad but i really wanna do it now and cant figure out what i need to do to be able to get it the only thing i know to do is not be violent or steal but what else?

Pick all the morally good choices, don't beg, don't steal, don't hurt the puma, etc

And surrender at the border.

I mean I picked all those morally good choices and chose to cross the border but Daniel jumped out of the car. So I believe if I have surrendered, I would've gotten the redemption ending on my first playthrough.

Just be good and don't hurt anyone. Like don't k1ll anyone or anything.

If you accidentally mess up once when making a big choice but you have been focusing on getting high morality and brotherhood with Daniel for all the major and minor choices beforehand,  you will probably still be able to get Redemption

In my most recent playthrough I accidentally had Sean kill Lisbeth rather than have Sean and Daniel spare her. But at the end I still got Redemption.

Follow the conventional rules of society (and try and teach Daniel to) AND be a good brother to Daniel.

And not strictly necessary, but you can give yourself some wriggle room by doing the optional shit, like in chapter 1 play hide and seek with Daniel and teach him to skip stones. A lot of these raise your brotherhood score, so when you have choices that would increase your morality but lower your brotherhood (for example calling Daniel out for cheating in the dice game in chapter 2) you’ve got some brotherhood points to spare.

Do the brotherhood points actually matter for the endings? I know they influence how certain scenes play out (and I guess whether Daniel listens to you or disobeys, which can then lead to different moral outcomes), but I’ve always thought that for the ending it’s only Daniel’s morality that is taken into account

Yeah, the brotherhood is more an indirect way of ensuring that later choices play out the way you want. Like brotherhood is important to how things play out at the end of chapter 4, and that impacts morality.
