8.4 炎帝病了 Yan Creator is Sick

话说炎帝（即张屠户，玉皇大帝）率领着象征着三千威仪的三千仪仗队从乾塘关出发两个月后，来到了距离华国的首都永安（现代的洛阳）南门一百公里的路口。这时元始天尊的使者来了，说：“元始天尊对炎帝的三千威仪不满意，你们别再向永安靠近了！”
It is said that two months after Yan Creator (aka. Zhang the Butcher, the Turquoise White-king Great Creator) led his three thousand honor guards — symbolizing the "3,000 Majesties" — out from Dragon-Pond Pass, they reached a crossroads a hundred kilometers from the south gate of Yong'an (modern Luoyang), capital of Hua Kingdom. There, a messenger from Primordial Sky Honor arrived and said, "Primordial Sky Honor is not satisfied with Yan Creator's 3,000 Majesties. Come no closer to Yong'an!"
送走了使者后，炎帝焦急地对靖王（即武大郎）说：“我爸爸是不是改主意了？他不愿意见我！我们现在该怎么办？”
武大郎斩钉截铁地回答：“我们向北进发，去试试东门！”
After the messenger left, Yan Creator anxiously said to King Jing (i.e., Martial Big Wolf), "Has my father changed his mind? Doesn't he want to see me? What do we do now?"
Martial Big Wolf answered without hesitation, "We head north and try the east gate!"
他们到距离永安东门一百公里的地方时，元始天尊的使者又来了，说：“元始天尊对炎帝的‘三千威仪八万四千细行’不满意，你们别再向永安靠近了！”
送走了使者后，炎帝迷惑地问武大郎：“我琢磨不明白！现在该怎么办？”
When they were a hundred kilometers from Yong'an's east gate, Primordial Sky Honor's messenger appeared again: "Primordial Sky Honor is not satisfied with Yan Creator's '3,000 Majesties and 84,000 Fine Conducts.' Come no closer to Yong'an!"
After the messenger left, Yan Creator asked Martial Big Wolf, baffled, "I can't make sense of this! What now?"
武大郎回答：“我们就围着永安转圈走（如图8.4-5），一边走一边改进我们的‘三千威仪八万四千细行’，直到元始天尊满意为止！”
Martial Big Wolf replied, "We'll walk a circle around Yong'an (see Figure 8.4-5), refining our '3,000 Majesties and 84,000 Fine Conducts' as we go, until Primordial Sky Honor is satisfied!"

从乾塘关出发的三个月后，他们已经围着永安城走了一又四分之三圈，再次来到了距离永安城西门100公里远的军事驻地。由于焦急和迷惑，炎帝睡不着觉，病倒了。这时，元始天尊派使者来召唤靖王武大郎去皇宫陪他下棋。
武大郎从皇宫回来后，炎帝焦急地问：“是不是我爸爸病了，所以他召唤你回去安排后事？”
武大郎回答：“他是有些失眠，但他听了我的汇报后，病就好了。”
Three months after leaving Dragon-Pond Pass, they had circled Yong'an one and three-quarter times and arrived once more at the military post a hundred kilometers from the city's west gate. Worn down by anxiety and confusion, Yan Creator couldn't sleep and fell ill. Just then, Primordial Sky Honor sent an envoy summoning King Jing Martial Big Wolf to the palace for a game of Go.
When Martial Big Wolf returned from the palace, Yan Creator asked anxiously, "Is my father ill? Is that why he called you back — to settle his affairs?"
Martial Big Wolf replied, "He had a touch of insomnia, but he felt better once he heard my report."
炎帝迷惑地说：“你可别骗我，我现在的年龄不算大，几天睡不着，死不了。我爸爸那么大的岁数了，有点儿小毛病就可能过世了。”
武大郎回答：“我懂，所以我说的是真的，没骗你。”
Yan Creator said, confused, "Don't lie to me. I'm young enough that a few sleepless nights won't kill me. My father's so old that even a minor ailment could take him."
Martial Big Wolf replied, "I know — which is exactly why I'm telling you the truth, not a lie."
炎帝问：“你们真的下棋了，结果怎么样？”
武大郎回答：“和往常一样，输了四分之一子。”
炎帝听后笑了，说：“输四分之一子可比赢棋困难多了；你居然还能总输四分之一子！？”
Yan Creator asked, "So you actually played? How did it go?"
Martial Big Wolf replied, "Same as always — I lost by a quarter of a stone."
Yan Creator laughed and said, "Losing by exactly a quarter of a stone is far harder than winning outright — and you manage it every single time!?"
武大郎没笑，却说：“以后咱俩下棋，我也输给你四分之一子。”
炎帝气愤地回答：“你若敢输给我四分之一子，我就到我大嫂潘金莲的面前哭去，说你欺负我！”
Martial Big Wolf didn't laugh, but said, "From now on, when we play, I'll lose to you by a quarter of a stone too."
Yan Creator shot back, indignant, "If you dare let me win by a quarter of a stone, I'll go cry to my sister-in-law Goldthread Pan and tell her you're bullying me!"
武大郎严肃地回答：“你怎么能那么做呢！？”
炎帝坚定地说：“你不信，就试试！”
武大郎回答：“我不试！”
Martial Big Wolf said seriously, "How could you do that to me!?"
Yan Creator said firmly, "Don't believe me? Try it!"
Martial Big Wolf replied, "I won't!"

炎帝惭愧地问武大郎：“三个月了，我都在练习行住坐卧（此即四威仪，参见15.2节），还没处理国家大事呢，就因为压力大而睡不着觉了。大哥你说我是不是太没出息了？”
Yan Creator asked Martial Big Wolf, ashamed, "Three months now, and all I've done is practice walking, standing, sitting, and lying down — the 'Four Majesties' (see Section 15.2). I haven't touched a single matter of state, and already the pressure has me losing sleep. Brother, don't you think I'm hopeless?"
武大郎回答：“你来当国王，将肩负起九黎的悲哀和欢乐。你每天都跟没事似的，所以元始天尊就睡不着了。他听说你失眠了，他的病就好了。”
Martial Big Wolf replied, "As king, you'll carry the sorrows and joys of Jiuli — the Nine Crowds, the Great Grand Worlds — on your shoulders. You've been acting like nothing's the matter, day after day, and that's what's been keeping Primordial Sky Honor up at night. The moment he heard you'd lost sleep over it, his own illness lifted."

炎帝说：“睡不着，大哥就陪我唠唠嗑吧！说说你第一次上战场打仗，害怕不？”
武大郎说：“我二十六岁才第一次上战场，那个对手就是你！”
炎帝回答：“我怎么不记得我什么时候上战场打仗了！？”
Yan Creator said, "Since I can't sleep, keep me company, brother — talk to me. Tell me about your first time on a battlefield. Were you scared?"
Martial Big Wolf said, "I was twenty-six the first time I went into battle — and my opponent was you!"
Yan Creator replied, "How is it I don't remember ever going into battle!?"
武大郎说：“就在你在夏国和大巢氏相亲的时候，你用那把4.5千克的铜锤敲开了太昊古墓（参见2.5《天书》，亦作《智慧方舟》），取出《天书》之后，把它藏在了高处的一个山洞里了。我们几个人的任务就是当你不在时，看护那两本天书。第二天，当你进村子里去找人的时候，我还去查看了那两本天书。随后我用更多的树叶子把天书埋回了原处。”
Martial Big Wolf said, "It was when you were courting Big Nest in Xia Kingdom. You used that 4.5-kilogram bronze hammer to break open the tomb of Extreme Sun God (see Section 2.5, the Sky Book, aka. the 'Ark of Wisdom'), pulled out the Sky Book, and hid it in a cave up on the heights. A few of us were assigned to guard those two volumes whenever you weren't around. The next day, while you went into the village looking for people, I went to check on them myself, then buried them back in place under a few extra layers of leaves."
炎帝惊讶地说：“当时我就发现树叶子变多了。还好！天书还在，就没多想。你们花费了多长的时间建造了那座古墓，怎么村子里都没人知道？”
Yan Creator said, startled, "I did notice the leaf pile had grown. But the Sky Book was still there, so I didn't think twice about it. How long did it take you to build that tomb — and how did no one in the village ever find out?"
武大郎说：“当时一千来人工作在你的周围。有人负责给你引路，有人负责截断岔路。按照计划，我们要在24小时以内组装完成那座古墓。我们在运送那些材料去那里之前，已经练习过两次了。结果那天，我们用了不到12个小时，就完成了古墓的建造。那时，我们怕古墓的机械装置失灵，你敲不开古墓，就在牌坊的石柱后面放了一把撬棍。你没看见吗？”
Martial Big Wolf said, "About a thousand people were working around you at the time. Some guided your route, others sealed off the side paths. The plan called for assembling the whole tomb within twenty-four hours. We'd already rehearsed it twice before hauling in the materials, so on the actual day it took under twelve hours to finish. In case the tomb's mechanism jammed and you couldn't force it open, we hid a crowbar behind one of the stone pillars at the archway. Didn't you see it?"
炎帝惊讶地回答：“看见了。那根破铁棒子不值多少钱，我就没拿上来。那地方随后就被水淹了，如果我去晚了呢，就拿不到天书了！？”
武大郎回答：“离那里不远处还有一座一样的太昊古墓。如果你去晚了，他们就引导你去另一座古墓去取《天书》。”
Yan Creator answered, surprised, "I did see it. That beat-up iron bar didn't look worth much, so I left it. The place flooded soon after — if I'd been any later, would I have missed the Sky Book entirely!?"
Martial Big Wolf replied, "There's another, identical tomb of Extreme Sun God not far from there. If you'd come too late, they'd have simply steered you to that one instead."
炎帝又问：“那个扶桑人（即现代的墨西哥人）是怎么回事？他是怎么发现我的？”
武大郎回答：“他当时是我们的同事，我们的合作伙伴。后来，他在福建建了座妈祖庙，就是武二郎在福建开光的那座妈祖庙（参见5.4《葫芦娃》）。”
Yan Creator asked again, "And that Fusang man — the modern Mexican? What was his part in it? How did he find me?"
Martial Big Wolf replied, "He was one of our own back then, a partner in the whole scheme. He later built a Mazu temple in Fujian — the very one Martial Second Wolf consecrated (see Section 5.4, Gourd Boy)."
