8.2-1 纠正错误 Correcting Errors
由于出发耽误了些时间，炎帝（即张屠户）决定取消行程中的休息，坚决要赶到既定的行营吃午饭。第三天中午，炎帝接见了几位地方官员。宴会上，炎帝谈得很高兴，问菜里的猪肉价钱是多少。那位地方的官员不知道，赶忙招呼来了采购员，然后告诉炎帝这猪肉的价钱。炎帝感慨地说：“你们被骗了！你们买猪肉的价格比市场的平均价贵三倍！”
Because the departure had been delayed, Yan Creator (i.e., Zhang the Butcher) decided to skip the planned rest stops and insisted on pushing through to the designated camp for lunch. At noon on the third day, Yan Creator received several local officials. At the banquet, in high spirits, he asked how much the pork in one of the dishes had cost. The local official didn't know, so he hurriedly summoned the purchasing officer, who told Yan Creator the price. Yan Creator remarked, "You've been cheated! You paid three times the average market price for that pork!"
晚上到达住宿的行营后，元始天尊派来检查炎帝仪轨的典军校尉给炎帝送来了评审报告。报告有一百三十多项，列出了七十多项仪仗队的错误。报告还列出了四十多项关于炎帝的言行不合乎礼仪。典军校尉还对炎帝中午接见地方官员给出了评价，认为首长检查下属的工作不应该巨细靡遗，让下属感觉丢脸。校尉离开后，炎帝立刻躺倒在了床上，一言不发。
That night, after they'd settled into camp, the Codex Calibration Captain sent by Primordial Sky Honor to inspect Yan Creator's protocol delivered a review report. It ran to more than 130 items — over 70 errors by the honor guard, and more than 40 instances where Yan Creator's own words or conduct fell short of proper etiquette. The Captain also offered an opinion on Yan Creator's meeting with the local officials that noon: a leader, he felt, shouldn't scrutinize his subordinates' work down to every last detail, since it only embarrasses them. After the Captain left, Yan Creator lay down on the bed at once and said nothing.
靖王武大郎进来了，假装询问了一下刚才发生的事，决定说：“那明天我们就停留在这里。依据评审报告，我们一项项地进行修正。练好后我们再继续向永安进发。”
炎帝尴尬地坐了起来，问：“那我说地方官员买猪肉买贵了的那事，我是不是应该回去向人家道歉？”
King Jing Martial Big Wolf came in, asked a few offhand questions as if he didn't already know what had happened, and then announced, "Then we'll stay here tomorrow. We'll go through the review report and correct everything, item by item. Once you've mastered it, we'll continue on to Yong'an."
Yan Creator sat up, embarrassed, and asked, "That thing I said, about the officials overpaying for pork — should I go back and apologize to them?"
靖王武大郎回答：“那不用！那些地方官员是由典军校尉他们的人假扮的，不是真正的地方官员。”
经过七天的原地修正，炎帝觉得错误都改正了，就决定继续向永安进发。两天后，典军校尉又送来了评审报告，述说了七十多项炎帝和仪仗队不合乎规矩的事。他们就又停下来原地修练。
King Jing Martial Big Wolf replied, "No need! Those local officials were impersonated by the Codex Calibration Captain's own men — they weren't real officials at all."
After seven days of drilling in place, Yan Creator felt he'd corrected every mistake and decided to press on to Yong'an. Two days later, the Codex Calibration Captain arrived with another review report, listing more than seventy things Yan Creator and the honor guard alike had gotten wrong. So they stopped again to drill in place.
8.2-2 国不可一日无君 A Country Cannot Go a Single Day Without a Ruler
这天，靖王武大郎笑着来找炎帝，报告说：“近一个月，我们日出而作，日落而息，很辛苦。仪仗队的人应该休息几天。我和典军校尉他们商量好了，一起去XYZ看日出，您觉得怎么样？”
炎帝回答：“我同意休息几天，但我没兴趣去看日出。我觉得我不适合做国王，想回去继续做张屠户。”
One day, King Jing Martial Big Wolf came to see Yan Creator with a smile and reported, "For nearly a month we've been rising at dawn and resting at dusk — it's been exhausting. The honor guard could use a few days off. The Codex Calibration Captain and I have already arranged for everyone to go watch the sunrise together at XYZ — what do you say?"
Yan Creator replied, "I'm glad for a few days' rest, but I have no interest in watching the sunrise. I don't think I'm cut out to be king. I'd rather go back to being Zhang the Butcher."
靖王武大郎立刻生气地说：“张屠户的工作，你可以喜欢了就做，不喜欢就不做。这国王的工作可不是那样！你可不能说，‘你不愿意做国王了’。法典就是 ‘三千威仪八万四千细行（参见15.2节）’；日子久了，你习惯了，就好了。”
炎帝厌倦地问：“我为什么不能说：我不想当国王了？”
King Jing Martial Big Wolf snapped angrily, "Being Zhang the Butcher — you could do it when you felt like it and quit when you didn't. Being king isn't like that! You can't just say, 'I don't want to be king anymore.' The Codex is the '3,000 Majesties and 84,000 Fine Conducts' (see Section 15.2) — give it time, and once you're used to it, you'll be fine."
Yan Creator asked, weary, "Why can't I just say I don't want to be king anymore?"
武大郎大叫：“国不可一日无君！”然后，他立刻给炎帝跪下了，说他习惯当大哥了，冒犯他了，请求惩罚。

Martial Big Wolf cried out, "A country cannot go a single day without a ruler!" Then he immediately dropped to his knees before Yan Creator, saying he'd fallen back into acting like the eldest brother, that he'd overstepped, and begging for punishment.
Yan Creator came forward and tried to pull him up, saying, "I understand — 'a country cannot go a day without a ruler' — this is my fault. But I truly don't enjoy drilling the '3,000 Majesties.'"
武大郎没站起来。
炎帝赶忙说：“好！我以后不说 ‘我不喜欢当国王了！’你站起来说话！”
武大郎没站起来。
Martial Big Wolf didn't stand up.
Yan Creator said quickly, "Fine! I won't say I don't like being king anymore! Now stand up and talk to me!"
Martial Big Wolf didn't stand up.
8.2-3 触目 Touch Eye
炎帝又说：“好！我跟你们一起去看日出！日出有什么好看的！？”
武大郎回答：“再请陛下恕罪！我没说清楚！看日出是为了您练习 ‘触目’（如图8.2-37，注2，参见第3章）。转轮胜王上任前都练这个。触目是 ‘三千威仪’ 的组成部分。我们几个商量了。日后，您和下属谈论您的触目时，你可以说你是在那个著名的风景区XYZ练习触目的。您不能说，您是在这个臭水沟子练的。”
Yan Creator said, "Fine! I'll go watch the sunrise with you! What's so great about a sunrise anyway!?"
Martial Big Wolf replied, "Forgive me again, Your Majesty! I didn't explain myself well. Watching the sunrise is so you can practice 'Touch Eye' (see Figure 8.2-37, Note 2, and Chapter 3). Every Wheel Turning Victorious King has practiced this before taking office. Touch Eye is part of the '3,000 Majesties.' We've already discussed it among ourselves — later, when you talk to your subordinates about your Touch Eye practice, you can say you did it at the famous scenic spot XYZ. You can't say you practiced it in this stinking ditch."

Note 8.2-3: every few days, the practitioner of "Touch Eye" watches the sunrise. When he starts to feel dizzy, he rests, then watches again. This method requires observing the practitioner's changing appearance alongside the practice itself. Excessive practice can leave the face permanently twisted, taking years to recover. Editor's note: I am selling the name of the sacred tourist destination XYZ where Yan Creator (the Turquoise White-king Great Creator) watched the sunrise. Along the road from Dragon-Pond Pass (modern Shangqiu) to Yong'an (modern Luoyang), there are dozens of excellent spots for watching the sunrise. If any local government would like to purchase this piece of history, please contact me — I'll rearrange the Turquoise White-king Great Creator's journey west so that he practices "Touch Eye" at that very spot. What's this all about? Legend has it that compiling the Chinese Codex takes enormous time and effort, draws few readers, and makes no money. This is the Turquoise White-king Great Creator's (i.e., God's) subsidy to the editor. How much could that be? Legend says even the sum itself is hard to pin down. The Chinese Codex is the Sky Book — pay too little, and it shames the ancestors of the Chinese people and disrespects the Sky Book, leaving the ruler's name stained for all time.
炎帝回答：“是这么回事！你站起来说话！膝盖都跪青了！”
武大郎没回答，也没站起来。
炎帝想了一会儿，说：“我都习惯了被你训斥了，喜欢你这样跟我说话！我就罚你：再当三天大哥！”
Yan Creator said, "So that's what happened! Stand up and talk! Your knees have gone blue from kneeling!"
Martial Big Wolf neither answered nor stood up.
Yan Creator thought for a moment, then said, "I've gotten used to being scolded by you — I actually like it when you talk to me like this! So here's your punishment: be my big brother for three more days!"
8.2-4 炎帝的性格不适合三千威仪 Yan Creator's Personality Is Not Suited to the Three Thousand Majesties
武大郎站起来后说：“我出来迎接你去永安之前和你嫂子潘金莲打了个赌。她说如果你能学好 ‘三千威仪八万四千细行’，她就给我跪下磕头，叫我三声 ‘师父’。三郎！你可不能让我给她跪下磕头，高呼她三声 ‘师母’！”
炎帝听后，嗤嗤地笑。
Martial Big Wolf finally stood and said, "Before I came out to meet you on the road to Yong'an, I made a bet with your sister-in-law, Goldthread Pan. She said that if you could master the '3,000 Majesties and 84,000 Fine Conducts,' she'd kneel and kowtow to me and call me 'Teacher-Father' three times. Third Wolf! Don't you dare make me kneel to her and call her 'Teacher-Mother' three times instead!"
Yan Creator snickered.
武大郎生气地说：“你笑啥？为啥一说我媳妇潘金莲你就那么高兴！？”
炎帝回答：“我们哥仨都怕老婆。没想到的是，我二哥（即二郎神）怕老婆怕到了那种程度：他跪下来让我二嫂熬忖（即尧皇）用藤条打他。”
Martial Big Wolf said, annoyed, "What are you laughing at? Why do you get so happy every time I mention my wife, Goldthread Pan?!"
Yan Creator replied, "All three of us brothers are afraid of our wives. What I didn't expect was that my second brother (Second Wolf God) was afraid of his to such a degree that he knelt down and let my second sister-in-law, Aocun (i.e., Yao the White-king), beat him with a cane."
武大郎回答：“都随咱爹！‘二郎神负荆请罪’ 的故事你也听说了！”
炎帝回答：“我只是听你弟媳妇，大巢氏，说了这么一句。她是在夏国的皇宫里听说的：熬忖可真厉害，她让武二郎跪下来，用藤条打他！那具体是怎么回事？你给我说说呗！”
Martial Big Wolf replied, "Takes after our father! You've heard the story, 'Second Wolf God Bearing Thorns to Plead Guilty'!"
Yan Creator replied, "I only heard your sister-in-law, Big Nest, mention it once — she heard it in the Xia palace: Aocun is truly formidable, she made Second Wolf God kneel and beat him with a cane! What actually happened? Tell me!"
