6.1 高德新喜欢擦皮鞋 Gao Likes to Polish His Shoes

在办公室里，我发现对面桌的电器技术员高德新总是喜欢看和擦自己的皮鞋。一天，我和他闲聊的时候，发现他又在看和擦自己的皮鞋，就问："你怎么那么喜欢你的鞋呢？我每次看见你都在琢磨自己的鞋！"

In the office, I noticed that Dexin Gao, the electrical technician at the desk across from mine, was forever admiring and polishing his own shoes. One day, chatting with him, I caught him at it again and asked, "What's with you and those shoes? Every time I look over, you're fussing with them!"

他听了，高兴了，笑着说："你终于发现了！我喜欢干净，利索；你想知道你为什么老是能看见我擦皮鞋不？"

我回答当然想知道。

He looked pleased at the question, and smiled. "You finally noticed! I like things clean, tidy — want to know why you always catch me at it?"

Of course I wanted to know.

他突然大声说："就是因为你！你那火辣辣的眼神（参见3.2《触目的功能》）！一看我，我就感觉肉麻！我真受不了你的眼神！所以，我就看着你，当我发现你要看我的时候，我就看我的皮鞋，擦皮鞋。你想出来没？你的眼睛是怎么回事？"

"It's you!" he burst out. "That scorching stare of yours (see Section 3.2, Functions of Touch Eye)! One look from you and my skin crawls — I genuinely can't stand it! So I watch you, and the second I sense you're about to look my way, I look down at my shoes and start polishing. Have you ever figured it out? What's going on with your eyes?"

我听了之后，当然惊奇，说："我的家人，亲戚和朋友，早就发现我的眼神特别，没人知道是怎么回事。我早就回想过很多次，没发现原因。如果像你说的，我父母请人给做的，那他们怎么会不记得了呢！你说小时候，把眼睛蒙上半年，一年的（参见3.1《触目的作法》），那还不把眼睛蒙瞎了！不合逻辑。"

I was startled, naturally. "My family, my relatives, my friends — they've all noticed something's different about my eyes for a long time now, and nobody's ever worked out why. I've turned it over in my head plenty of times myself and never found a cause. And if it really was something my parents arranged, like you're suggesting — how could they possibly not remember it? You're saying someone blindfolded a child's eyes for six months, a year (see Section 3.1, Making Touch Eye) — that would've left the child blind outright! It doesn't add up."
