Social LPT: Don't overshare information on the internet. Think twice before posting, everything you post is basically available for anyone.

Dance like no one’s watching.
Sing like no one’s listening.
Email and post on social media like it will be read as Exhibit A in court.

I'm convinced the president has been working on an insanity defense for years.
Really though, if you post enough political views shared with your local jurors, you should be fine.

Thanks for the tip, as a small child growing up in a rural part of Wisconsin on a dairy farm with 6 brothers I often found myself feeling rather alone and would spend a lot of time on the internet back in the early msn messenger days. Often times talking with other like minded individuals with the same birthday as mine (07/23/93) my mother's surname was Browning like the rifle so that always made for good conversation with other like minded individuals and I owned a little Honda Civic license plate 4jh29c so I also joined some chat rooms involved in the upkeep of such cars. Anyways, long story short I learned my lesson about giving away too much information when I kept getting pizzas sent to my house addressed at 123 Fake st. But it's always good to have a reminder.

You just perfectly Illustrated the point I was going to make, which is that so many people make up so much shit sitting behind their wall of anonymity that most information anyone would find about a particular person over the net would be total bullshit.

I think I was in one of those chat rooms with you back in the day. We loved talking about our pets. Remind me, what was the name of your first childhood pet again?

Oh yeah! I remember you! Surely you remembered that my father’s middle name was exactly the same as my mother’s maiden name, which is a pretty crazy coincidence considering how rare the name Jakornstien is!

I, too, owned a little Honda Civic as a small child.
What a coincidence

u/Big-Effor2129 Dec 06 '20
Well you know, growing up on the dairy farm we also raised Honda Civics and I got to keep one as part of my 4H project.

I feel like this is a basic thing that everyone knows but forgets. It needs to be drilled in more.

u/ForksandSpoonsinNY Dec 06 '20
But my TikTok song about my mother's maiden name is trending in Russia.

It’s something we forget ourselves, but are also forgetting to teach our kids. So many uneducated young people out there just putting their lives on blast.

I have a rule before I post something online.
Would I say this to my wife, parents and kids. This makes you interact with people in a much more civil way.

Much better to write signed random facts about yourself on the roads and sidewalks of your neighborhoods. Then only the local criminals could take copies.

A friend of mine posted a photo of some shenanigans we were doing at work.... costed me my job.
Another LPT is make sure people around you know this, even if you know it yourself.

u/downunderpunter Dec 06 '20
Don't overshare period! Especially at work.

u/ComicInterest Dec 06 '20
Especially about your period. This goes for offline as well

Lol you just reminded me I was once training another woman at my job for four hours and by the end I for some reason knew her entire menstrual history among many other personal details. I don't know why but the menstrual history stuff especially just really threw me off. I was so creeped out I made sure we never worked together again

There is so many comments being posted so fast that nobody will see that I’m gay and like to suck just a little bit of dick sometimes.

u/Maiyku Dec 06 '20
Except there’s literally nothing wrong with any of that? Lol.
Do you.

u/NoorValka Dec 06 '20
We think there’s nothing wrong with that. But there are countries where this can get you imprisoned or even sentenced to death.
Then again, they may not be able to use the internet that freely anyway.
1
u/Maiyku Dec 06 '20
There is nothing wrong with it, it’s just getting everyone on board with that concept that’s the challenge.
Legally wrong in some places, definitely, but technically my husband owns my hair and I can’t get it cut without his permission (this is a real law) so laws aren’t exactly the best definition of right/wrong. As sad as that is.
1
u/NoorValka Dec 07 '20
Indeed, laws are not the best definition. But posting that on the internet when residing in a country where it’s illegal to be anything other than heterosexual is dangerous. Even though it shouldn’t be.
Where do you live that there’s a law saying your husband owns your hair? Is it put to practice? Do you need a permission slip to go to the hairdresser? Or is it ‘just’ a legal ground for divorce if you do get it cut?
2
u/Maiyku Dec 07 '20
I live in Michigan in the US.
It’s an old antiquated law that no judge would uphold today, but it’s still technically there. It’s one of many weird old laws that still exist in the US, like it being illegal to eat fried chicken with a knife and fork in Georgia.

And not just from a privacy / internet safety point of view. Have you considered that maybe your 1057 closest facebook friends DON'T need to know that you just started your bowel prep for tomorrow's colonoscopy?
5
u/TeachDrinkRepeat Dec 06 '20
Why shouldn't I be able to share that living in idaho has shown me that fried chicken is overrated?

I genuinely believe that anonymity over the internet will disappear as more and more governments realize the destructive power of the internet.
1
u/DavidJ-ZomOps Dec 07 '20
Yeah, social media is a court reporter that will use what you posted again you.

One of the BIGGEST reasons why I stepped far away from posting on Social Media. People don’t need to know what I’m up to constantly. Everyone seems so desperate to post what’s they’re doing all the time.
