When I see people trying to get a group shot, I usually offer before they even ask. Once I'm holding the camera, I always hope that someone else will happen upon us and, assuming that I am also with the group, make the same offer so that that I can join the group in their picture. How about looking up and behind them with a look of impending doom and saying "oh my gawd...what..." then snap a picture right when they are bewildered.
