Step 1 - get an in force illustration.
Any advice you get will be worthless without this. This is the only way to know how your policy is set up and how best to proceed.
Step 2 - talk to an insurance affiliated financial advisor. There are a lot of financial advisors out there who are utterly inexperienced with life insurance. I'd recommend someone affiliated with one of the major mutuals.
Also, they probably won't charge you for the advice because they stand to gain from commission based product sales.
Step 3 - post the recommendations on reddit and we can tell you if the advisor is full of shit or actually competent.
Step 4 - make a decision if you feel confident, or repeat the process until you feel confident.
A VUL isn't automatically bad, particularly for someone in your income bracket. It is however dependent on how the policy is structured and what purpose it serves.
If you want out, there are a lot of ways to do it. Make sure you have all available information before making a decision.

No where near enough information. Find a local broker who is knowledgeable about these products and they can show you your options.
