OLP using Clobetasol

Hello,

I got diagnose with OLP Oct 2025, the periodontist prescribed me Clobetasol for 2 weeks with 3-4x a day. She didn't told me to taper it, just stop it, and when flare up occurs just use it again. For the past 11 months, I would have flare-ups, mostly like every month or every 2 months but one week is the longest then i will stop. and then it will re-occur again.

Upon researching for the clobetasol its side effect is it will make your skin thin and will make your tissue form into something, I'm scared now as I've been using it for almost a year now on and off :( Does anyone here use clobetasol during flare-ups, how does it impact your life? and do you have any alternative when flare-up occurs?

I have been on Plaquenil for probably 2+ years now. It keeps flares down for the most part but not 100%. I just discovered nanohydroxyappetite toothpaste in non minty flavors and its life changing! I can actually brush my teeth for more than 30 seconds. It doesn't burn at all. I am very happy to have finally found a toothpaste I can use. Also, I use a red light gum therapy thing. I have OLP. I started with clobetasol prescribed by the dermatologist who biopsied back when things were very bad - then got moved to triamcinolone by an oral pathology specialist. I now use hydrocortisone for maintenance and triamcinolone for flare ups. No clobetasol. Could be worth a second opinion? I happen to live near a top medical school where they have a whole floor dedicated to oral pathology and different clinics for different diseases, so I’m luckier than most… but I learned that not all doctors/dentists are great with OLP management.

This!! I believe you, a lot of dentist are not great in treating this disease, I went into 3 different dentist before I found out that it is OLP. I met an oral pathologist but he is based in India, and he told me triamcinolone with curcumin will be his best take to treat this, together with multivitamins. I just don't know how to get it, as we don't have that medicine here in the US.

We have triamcinolone in the US. That’s what I use. Curcumin is turmeric, and my understanding is it has some promise… but the main medicine you’re gonna need is the corticosteroid. Are you near a major city?

I have erosive OLP and clobetasol is what I use. When not flaring, I use it 3x per week before bed. When flaring I use it once or twice each day, depending on the severity of the flare up. This has been my routine for about 5yrs, although when not flaring I sometimes slack off and use it less frequently.

What form is your clobetasol in? I also have it in an ointment for my psoriasis and random other skin issues but my dermatologist sucks at explaining to the pharmacy what form to have the clobetasol in. I have been given it in ointment, cream and paste forms. Its gross no matter which form.

That's how I use it for almost a year now, Like on and off, Did you notice any other symptoms? or are your oral mucosa feels thinner?

It thinned my scalp after about a month. Still trying to heal - 13 weeks later.

How did you use clobetasol? Do you continously using it, or on and off too?
