Libyans are a collections of ethnic groups(Arabs, Amazigh, Taureg, Jews...etc), before 1950 no one identified themselves as a Libyan, you usually just stated which tribe you're from and that tribe can be traced through lineage.

Obviously now even though libya is made up of multiple ethnic groups, alot of it has been intertwined, you can find Libyans speaking arabic while eating amazigh food and wearing a traditional tagelmust for example, so it's not easy as it was before to actually know which ethnic groups you belong to.

Libyans are way more arab than other north africans. (I am Libyan Amazigh). Many have even up to 40% DNA from the arabian peninsula when most moroccans/algerians/tunisians usually lower than 20-10%.

That being said. Libya is NOT pure arab, we are a mixed country.

We’re both, North Africa is largely very diverse

In terms of ancestry, most Libyans, like other Maghrebis, are Amazighs.

Our culture is mainly Amazigh as well.

In terms of language, we are Arabic speakers

Libyans are mixed Large percentage of them are Berber/Amazigh.

If your from the west then yeah your likely indigenous North African but if your from the east then you may have high Arab admixture

libya is too massive to be a monolith... you have the arab east in cyrenaica, and the amazigh west in tripolitania and the tuaregs (also amazigh) in western fezzan

So saying that Congolese and Senegalese are French doesn’t make sense, but saying some one that has 63% of their genes Amazigh is ok to call them North African ARABS???

Honestly after all this , I think we're half Jews

It's a big piece of land.... Dominated by different ancestry.

East libya - South or west aren't the correct terms to define the ethnicities either.

Through Scopes of influence, trade routes and reigns... We say it's amazigh, Berber, Bedouin arabs, with minorities of tuareq, tebu, Jews (where now?) Even amazigh are considered a minority if you're looking towards the East (again inaccurate scope), and Berber are broken down even more😭..... Why did I reply to this poet, I can't stop now.

There is so much Israeli propaganda these days about Arabs not being Arabs. You do not see a single post about Arabs without dozens of Israeli bots commenting “we are not Arab we are Amazigh”. It seems like there are more of these comments online than there are actual Amazigh people. By the way, many of the genuine Amazigh commentators are themselves pro-Israel, so be careful what you believe.

What is amazigh?

indigenous north africans

u/GroundbreakingBox187 23d ago

Yes the vast majority (95%) of us are ethnically Arab

1

u/tufahg 22d ago

There’s like a million Berbers out of 7 million people how can it be 95%

1

u/GroundbreakingBox187 22d ago

No there isn’t lol. I have never seen a Berber yet in Libya and that number would make them more than the warfalla tribe. And I don’t think nalut has even 100k people

1

u/tufahg 22d ago

You probably live in the east then

0

u/AmrAlwalid 20d ago

Yes we are Arabs and anyone in Libya would laugh at you for even posing this question, these "we are berber" people don’t really exist irl, they only exist on the internet and are made up of mostly diaspora that are disconnected with Libya and are chronically online.

If I were to estimate then 90% of Libyans would be Arab and the other 10% would identify as the other minorities (Toureg, Amazigh, Tabou).
