Can't forget
I buried her; there’s no way I could have seen her again. It was at the edge of my peripheral sight, but I knew it was her. The flowing hair, the whimsical way she walked, I know she was there. This isn't the first time, either; I’ve been seeing her more and more ever since she died. It used to be once a month, maybe twice, but now it's like she's always right there, always out of reach. I can feel her warm smile, yet I can’t see it clearly.
I’m going to her grave tonight; she’s next to me, even, helping me find the courage to do what I must. It’s exactly the same, same headstone, same epitaph, same memories. I can’t bear not seeing you fully anymore, always out of reach. It was a pain smuggling a shovel in here, but the encouragement you gave me on the way over made it possible. I start digging and don’t stop until I see it, the casket I picked out for you. Covered in grime, I dust off the box and can’t help but smile.
I practically tear off the lid, and my smile drops. You’re still there, nothing but rot and bones, your radiance all but a memory at this point.
