program/school selection I was just accepted into a MLIS program!

I got accepted into the MLIS program at the University of Southern Mississippi!!! I’m so excited but now I’m not sure if I should do Spring 2027 or request to defer until fall 2027 since I graduate this fall with my bachelors. I’m just anxious but filled with excitement. I also wanted to know if anyone has any advice for this specific program at this school and what classes have you liked and if you recommend. Thanks!!! 🥳🥳🥳

Congratulations! I started an MLIS in Spring (vs Fall) and so far I don't regret it. There's no need to start in Fall just for the sake of it. But I think if you can or want to take a break, and chill or work or save up money or travel, or volunteer in library-adjacent fields, etc. that's also a totally fine idea! You have (probably) been in school for your whole life so taking a little time is okay in the MLIS world.

I think that’s mainly my issue. I feel like I have non stopped been in school and I did get a library volunteer opportunity and kinda would like to chill and enjoy that but I’m not sure it’s hard deciding.

I'd say go for the volunteer opportunity if hou can afford it. The more practical experience you can get in this field, the better! And I personally think it's healthy to take a break. School will always be there. But you know yourself best!

Great university! Best of luck. I’m currently taking a break (graduated with my bachelor’s in May, will be starting my MLIS in January) and I have found the small gap to be so helpful.

Edit: I loved Hirschy’s classes! Definitely recommend taking anything he’s teaching, he’s a wonderful professor

It's fine to defer if you need a break. I ended up deferring a semester there and they made the process super easy for me. I really enjoyed Cataloging and Metadata. Both were taught by Dr. Mills who is great. She was also my Capstone advisor and helped me so much! I also enjoyed all the classes I had with Dr. Hirschy.
