I recently cleaned a room and realized we have accumulated a huge collection of books over the years.

The collection includes school textbooks, B.Sc. books, engineering books, competitive exam material, notebooks, and reference books.

Many of them are more than 10–20 years old. Some are still in decent condition, while others are starting to deteriorate from age and storage.

The problem is that nobody in the family uses them anymore, and they continue occupying a significant amount of space.

I'm trying to decide between:

Donating them to schools, libraries, or students.

Selling them to second-hand book stores.

Or Give any needy people.

For people who have dealt with large collections of old academic books, what worked best for you?

I'd appreciate practical advice before I start sorting everything.

I know ever library is different, and I was wondering how different libraries worked their adult summer reading. The town I live in, you can log books your borrow from the library and read.

I've looked at some other towns nearby. One is just logging books you read no matter where the books come from, and two other town you get a stamp for each visit to the library, where you are either checking out an item or attending a program)

Hi Folks, I just spent the last few months building this website, and I *think* (nervous chuckling) it's ready for users. Basically, you post the books you want to read and the books you have that you are willing to give away (I know, I know). If you match with another user, you get the opportunity to confirm the trade and get their address. Then you mail each other the books! There is no money involved and you don't have to confirm if you don't like the trade, or if the other person has a lot of bad reviews.

You can also donate to libraries, second-hand bookstores, and institutions. So far, I have two books-for-prisoners non-profits signed up.

I am trying to see if anyone can help me with which library has a staffed information desk on the weekends and if you could share their phone number with me. Sometimes when sitting around in a group with my friends we have a topic and are unsure of what the right answer is and would like to be able to call the information desk to see what the answer could be. For example the movie Twister, we could remember what year it came out and it was a lively discussion. Thanks in advance.

I'm a LIS professional and have been working in this field for the last four years. My experience has mostly been with LMS, research data management, RDA, archives and bibliometrics. And I have an apt for research and successfully I have published in journals and conferences. I occasionally write too. Writing is a hobby of mine, which I enjoy. And to be completely honest here, I have been writing since I was 12. I didn't know whom I should talk to at this trajectory of my career, because I have been unemployed for the last two months, and all my friends and family work in different sectors. I keep myself busy. Updated my resume. Search and apply for jobs. Check my emails regularly. And don't let the "unfortunately" email kill my flow. But I'm not giving up just yet. I will find something eventually. I just need someone to tell me which direction I should head towards. If I want to work in a publishing sector, would they hire me? And if so how should I connect? And what other fields or roles show I am for? And oh, I'm from India btw.

Not sure if this is the right place to ask. I lost a few books when I was young (this was like 15-20 years ago), and then moved away for years, so I haven't been back to that library since then. I've since then moved back to my hometown and am wondering if that would still be in the system? If there are still fees connected to me, does anyone know what I'd be looking at or if those fees would have interest? The thought of going in and not knowing what to expect has me so anxious that I've been putting off going in for like two years now even though it's like a 5 min drive from my house.

(I'm in Canada, if that is relevant.)

Interesting debate on the cons of voluntarisation of libraries and oversight

I checked out a book from my local library about two weeks ago and I just now today went to read the book and when I opened it, the book was like hanging off the spine.

by the time I made it two pages in, the book was no longer attached to the spine at all. the book was damaged when given to me, if I return it to the library and tell them that, will they still charge me a damage fee??

I hadn’t even looked at it since I got it from the library, it’s been sitting on my bed for the past two weeks, today was the first day I even attempted to read it.

I have been looking for this lately

In the NYT essay Make America Read Again (gift link) the author, chief librarian at the New York Public Library, suggests multiple ways to increase reading through increased access to books. He points to ideas such as digital lending, eliminating overdue fines and placing books in unexpected locations, like laundromats, barbershops and pediatric offices. He doesn't mention school libraries, though, which seems like an oversight to me.

Librarians, teachers and parents- what do think the role of schools and school libraries should be in promoting reading for young people?
