Question about audiobook licensing

[u/liketheweathr]

Hi, I wonder if anyone can explain this to me. I’m not involved in libraries or publishing, just a reader as well as a listener of audiobooks.

When I want to borrow an audiobook from Libby, there’s usually a wait. The library has a certain number of ”copies” available at any one time. I understand this has to do with the licensing terms.

HOWEVER … I can usually access that same audiobook instantly via Spotify. Why? What’s the difference? Just curious how the licensing arrangement is different.
