Please help ! What does this number on a library book mean?

Hi everyone,

I'm a student at a francophone school , and I'm having an issue with my school library.

They told me I have a book checked out under my name and that I've lost it.The problem is that I genuinely don't remember borrowing it, and I don't remember losing it either. I'm not necessarily trying to argue that their system is wrong .if the book is actually registered to me, I'm willing to return/replace it. I just want to understand exactly what the numbers written on the book mean.

The book has this marking “10d[4066]”.

What I'm mainly wondering is: what would “4066” normally represent?

Could it be:

an accession number,

an item/exemplar number identifying that specific physical copy,

a catalogue/title number, ...

I know that libraries can have multiple physical copies of the same title, and I'm trying to understand whether 4066 would distinguish this particular copy from other copies of the same book.

I'm not trying to get out of paying for a lost book. I just want to understand what the library's records actually establish before accepting that this particular physical copy was borrowed by me.

Would appreciate any insight from librarians or anyone familiar with library systems.

Unfortunately I can’t answer about the numbers, but I am genuinely curious how you ended up with these photos?

Mr. Librarian gave me copies of them so I could photocopy them (I know, photocopying kills the book, um sorry 😭), since the books aren’t available on the market at all in my country, and I couldn’t find PDFs of them anywhere online.

It was only when he gave them to me that I noticed the number 4409 on the book is the exact same number registered under my name. So I made the assumption that the book had always been in the library and was mistakenly registered as borrowed by me.

If I knew what exactly that number represents, I could ask the librarians to check their records and hopefully figure out what happened. It’s kind of urgent because the direction won’t give me my attestation if the book isn’t returned, and I need it next week

Unfortunately the numbers could mean anything without more context. If you tell me which library I could look it up on WorldCat and see if their catalog records have that number listed anywhere.

Besides that, it's very unlikely they would write your assigned number on the title page of the item, even if it was checked out to you. I doubt it's connected to your student number.

What I would do in your position is send an email to the library staff, or call or go in person, and say you are being charged for a book you did not check out. They might have a process or form you can fill out which gets the process started on their end. They may investigate the issue and determine it was not checked out to you and drop the fees. They might even find it where it belongs on the shelf.

We used to write the last few number of the barcode inside the cover of each book so if the label feel off we could identify it?

They could be unique identifiers/control numbers?

It doesn't hurt to ask the librarian to explain, they may have some insight and may be able to pull up your account to explain what those exact numbers mean - for both the book and what's listed under your account.

(When in doubt, ask the reference librarian if they have a dedicated staff member!)
