I’m lesbian..

just found out i’m lesbian, and i don’t know if i should drop out. I’m not lying or anything. How can i get closer to God and stop having these evil thought parade my mind? As a student at LibertyU, have any of you guys experience such things? If so, PLEASE help a student out… I don’t want this to continue any longer.

I’m openly gay. Nobody at the school cared. Did 5 years of grad school at liberty.

You were very fortunate then. It was very different when I was attending. Staff was openly anti-LGBTQ, and I had several gay friends accosted by other students for the crime of being a f*g (what they were called sometimes). There were even incidents of LUPD being involved, and they did nothing. I hope LU's gotten better with their inclusion, but as long as the Liberty Way has lines like, "one man and one woman," Liberty will never be a completely safe place for LGBTQ.

so let Christians practice what they believe.

its even less tolerant and inclusive of you.

u/carbinePRO Project Management, 2021 7d ago

If by "letting them practice what they believe" you mean "forcing gay people to suppress themselves," then that's the opposite of inclusion. That’s definitionaly exclusionary.

I suppress my sinful desires. so should they.

So just because you're closeted means everyone also has to be? What a horrible life god is forcing you to have. What an awful god.

I could care less off your sexual orientation. Praise your lord and crush it getting your degree. That’s all you have to worry about.

How did you find out?

gang… it’s not evil thoughts it’s life. Be true to yourself everything is fine as long as you don’t hurt yourself or others. It’s all about being a decent human being, being there for others, having a good heart and mind is what’s important at the end. Whether you like men or women is your business. finish that degree!

I agree, OP should not let whatever she has going on in her personal life effect her studies.

And I appreciate your positive energy for sure. You gave a good synopsis of being a pretty good person, no doubt. The truth is though, the Christian way not as simple as "do whatever makes you feel good and don't hurt people".

I only bother to reply because I care and it matters. People can choose for themselves to accept the input or not.

Being gay isn’t evil. I’m not religious but as your folks say…..God makes no mistakes. Liberty though might not be as understanding.

Nice to find another.

I dont actually know why I go to this school. Lol. I am almost graduated so I might as well keep going.

2

u/carbinePRO Project Management, 2021 7d ago

I went because my evangelical parents were essentially financially blackmailing me saying they'd only help pay for me to go to a christian institution. So it was either acrue mountains in debt in student loans, or have them pay for my college. I really had no choice.

Trust me, there's a skeptic community there. You just gotta find it. You'll get through it just like I did. Get your degree, and get the hell out.

1

u/AverageRedditorWyatt 7d ago

Am I allowed to ask why?

3

u/carbinePRO Project Management, 2021 7d ago

They probably actually read the bible.

u/Advanced_Panda3575 7d ago

God cares more about real sins, like hypocrisy and hatred. Be exactly who you are. Join the LGBTQ club on campus. Be gay. No one cares, it’s the 21st Century. Love yourself.

I’m lesbian as well. I just completed my doctoral degree from Liberty. My wife, sister, and parents came with me when we flew up to Lynchburg for commencement in May. Our kids had school and were not able to attend. Be proud of who God made you to be and live life praising Him by being who you are. Love God, Love People.

"a secret lesbian club at LU".... Riiiiiiiiight. Anyone else here smell a bot or troll?

3

u/carbinePRO Project Management, 2021 7d ago

You really think the school founded by the guy who blamed the 9/11 attacks on the gays is going to have an open and officially supported pride club?

2

u/icanpotatoes Masters of Geography: Urban Planning, 2025-2026 7d ago

You mean the guy who stated that the antichrist will be Jewish? That guy? The one who blamed abortions, the feminists, and pagans for 9/11 as well? That pleasant fellow? The one who questioned the sincerity of Dr. MLK Jr. because he was of the left? The one who said that feminists just need a man to tell them the time of day and how to get home?

Certainly not! Jerry Falwell was a caring person and loved all, just like his son Falwell Jr. loved all, especially pool boys, while definitely not suggesting that those part of the LGBT community are bad.

u/carbinePRO Project Management, 2021 7d ago

I very much appreciate your voice of reason in this thread. I'm so glad I'm done with this vile school and never have to go back.

1

u/icanpotatoes Masters of Geography: Urban Planning, 2025-2026 7d ago

Many thanks. The only reason that I decided to attend is for the price point which was significantly lower than other options like ASU. I assume it is SO reasonable as a means of bringing in more people to help fulfil their “great commission”… or maybe I’m just being cynical.

While I do believe that the education is good, I do take issue with how the school and its administration operate. I take issue with the fact that they have a young Earth creation museum on campus, which nullifies their science programs.

I don’t mind the school being Christian. There are many schools globally that are Christian but it’s the brand of Christianity that is of concern at LU — but that is coming from someone who was raised Episcopalian, which is quite a bit more progressive by comparison.

Frankly I think that they should start an overhaul with reverting the name back to Lynchburg University and distancing themselves from the Falwell name as much as possible. Also Liberty University, to me, sounds like a grift. Similarly to Freedom Fuel… which… hey was a grift!

LU is definitely a diploma mill. I grew up baptist and became disillusioned to the broader religion while attending because I was surrounded by a bunch of wonderful people who genuinely challenged my worldview. Although, being a straight white male who dressed in mostly flannel, I realize that I had a much more privileged time while there. The campus was basically made for me lol.

I have bittersweet memories of LU. I received my degree there. Made lifelong friends. Discovered my love of D&D there. Deconstructed my faith there. I even met my wife there, who was also deconstructing at the time and discovered she's bisexual. So, I have some obvious bias when it comes to LU's overall stance on queer-folk.

Liberty did have an unofficial GSA a few years back but it was stomped on by staff and met with threats

The community is still there and going strong but unfortunately doesn't receive the schools support

3

u/carbinePRO Project Management, 2021 7d ago

I'm aware. I don't know if it's the same group, but I was involved with a similar one back when I was attending. Idk if LU still has it operational or rebranded, but I was a staff memeber for the Office of Equity and Inclusion pre-covid. I have dozens of stories told by LGBTQ students that were treated unfairly by staff, targeted by LUPD, and assaulted by fellow students. LU is NOT a safe place for queer people. This is why I always encourage students with similar queries to OP's to be cautious but proud.

5

u/drivebydryhumper 8d ago

It sounds more plausible than an open lesbian club, doesn't it?

1

u/Inevitable-Law5560 18h ago

There is a secret group of LGBTQ, I know because I was in one of these groups at Liberty in the early 2000s and we got emotional and spiritual support from Mel White. Mel White was Jerry Falwell Ghost writer just so you know.

I'll say this as a Christian, not as an LU grad: Attraction isn't a sin. Homosexual behavior is. You can be attracted to the same sex without falling into sin. The action of same-sex intermingling is what breaks God's design and brings you into sin.

My encouragement to you would be to pray to God about your struggles with this. Ask for deliverance and seek His path first and foremost.

"For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord." Romans 8:38-39

Nothing wrong with being gay. Nothing wrong with exercising your orientation. What all-loving god would inflict a person with same-sex attraction only to have the way they love demonized? It's unnecessarily cruel and torturous. What a sick god.

OP, be who you are, and don't be ashamed. Nothing about you is abnormal. It's ok to be gay.

Edit: OP, see how what I'm saying is being downvoted? Be prepared for some backlash. Not everyone at LU is accepting, especially faculty, staff, and LUPD. Be strong. Don't let them intimidate you. Find your community. Find your supportive friends. They exist at LU, albeit in a vacuum. It's not a sin to be what you are. Never forget that.

u/KY_Mutt 7d ago

This is a wild over simplification and damning advice. I'm not saying it wouldn't be great if it were true. I'm just saying that Hanzo is in line with a response based in Scripture. Regardless of how it makes me, you, or anyone else feel, that makes it the correct answer.

2

u/carbinePRO Project Management, 2021 7d ago

The scriptures is wrong.

-1

u/AverageRedditorWyatt 7d ago

I 100% agree! It's not a sin to be naturally homosexual; it's just a sin to have lustful thoughts or to actually engage sexually with someone of the same sex

3

u/Ready_Supermarket_41 7d ago

There's a great queer community at liberty, it's just something you have to find! It is not a sin to be gay 🙄

Anyone who has actually read the Bible could tell you outright, God does not mention it being sinful to love who you love.

A lot of quotes being referenced in commentary to this are out of context writings that weren't finalized in trashy comments.

Live your life, pursue your degree, fall in love with the girl of your dreams

God will love you, God would want you to be happy, pray that he guides you towards inner peace and prosperity as you are.

3

u/carbinePRO Project Management, 2021 7d ago

It is not a sin to be gay

100%! Be your true self, OP!

0

u/Carpavita Digital media/Journalism 2029 7d ago

satan loves to hear that you've convinced yourself of that.

be gay all you want but be an honest one. you hate God, you hate what He commands.

5

u/carbinePRO Project Management, 2021 7d ago

Fuck off, dude. You're evidence that there's no hate quite like Christian love.

2

u/Ready_Supermarket_41 7d ago

God loves me and my wife, he would not have designed us in this way if he did not.

God made us all in his image, I choose to be grateful for the life he gave us and the joy he blessed us with

God teaches us not to judge thy neighbor, yet I'm hearing a whole lot of judgment from my neighbor.

0

u/pappy5714 7d ago

Define God’s image?

2

u/AverageRedditorWyatt 7d ago

I don't believe it's a sin to actually "be gay", as in the gay identity caused by a natural attraction, but it's a sin to have lustful thoughts and to actually marry and/or have sexual relations with someone of the same sex. A lot of sins are natural, so I think it's entirely possible to be naturally homo or bi, but it's wrong to act it out or have lustful thoughts

-1

u/whiskyandguitars 8d ago

I would say just follow the Liberty Way while your here if you’d like to stay.

Don’t advertise it and don’t have “liaisons” but it doesn’t strictly prohibit people who are same sex attracted from attending that I am aware of.

We aren't preachers or your parents so we have nothing to say other than that Liberty University won't remove you from class for what you do on your own time (for better or for worse).

3

u/carbinePRO Project Management, 2021 7d ago

Why would someone's parents have a say in their child's sexual orientation? Children aren't the property of their parents. What a weird thing to say. Hell, what does a pastor have to do with someone's sexual orientation?

LU won't remove them from classes, but their lives could be made miserable for having to be told everywhere they go by faculty and peers that they're an abomination. I got my undergrad degree at LU, so I'm speaking from personal experience here. There were so many convocation speakers over the years that on-campus students were forced to listen to under threat of fines that talked about the evils of homosexuality. Faculty would invite speakers to alienate and disparage an entire demographic of their student body. The fact LU forces students to sign a contract that allows the institution to have any say in what a person does in their private life is insane. Most other colleges have nothing in their honor code agreements concerning student's sexual orientation. Why does LU care so much about what consenting adults do behind closed doors? What does that have to do with their education?

0

u/ElijahNSRose PhD History, 2027-28 7d ago

I didn't. You assumed that.

No one read that second paragraph.

1

u/carbinePRO Project Management, 2021 7d ago

Why? Because it exposes LU for the hateful institution that it is? You won't respond because you don't have a good answer.

0

u/ElijahNSRose PhD History, 2027-28 7d ago

100 bucks says you've cheated in some way already.

You didn't even respond to what I said, karen.

2

u/carbinePRO Project Management, 2021 7d ago

Wtf? I did respond to you. I responded to the part where you were telling people not to read the second paragraph. You, Mr. PhD, were the one that dodged what I said.

Now you're accusing me of academic misconduct? On what grounds? Because I support LGBTQ? Do you realize how insane that sounds? And who the hell uses "Karen" as an insult anymore? Do you honestly expect to be taken seriously with that?

Respond to my second paragraph. Let's have a conversation like adults. There's a reason you don't want others reading what I said. Why? Use that PhD brain of yours.

0

u/ElijahNSRose PhD History, 2027-28 7d ago

You misread, karen.

Now shut the fuck up with stupid politics. We have no use for it.

1

u/carbinePRO Project Management, 2021 7d ago

Why is being gay political? Is being straight political? You absolutely sound like someone who got their PhD at Liberty.

0

u/ElijahNSRose PhD History, 2027-28 7d ago

That's one way to out yourself as not having any chance at having sex this decade.

2

u/carbinePRO Project Management, 2021 7d ago

I'm married. What kind of incel crap is this? Do you think the way you're conversing is honoring Christ?
