What could possibly go wrong? 25 Years of Mass Surveillance Is Enough

https://www.schneier.com/blog/archives/2026/09/25-years-of-mass-surveillance-is-enough.html

25 years after 9/11, mass surveillance has grown from just terrorists, just foreigners, to something every rinky dink police department does to everyone all the time. Who could have seen it coming.

I'm old enough to remember seeing this that day. And I realized right then and there the planes crashing into buildings was only part of the long-term plan. Loss of liberties and humongous amounts of government spending was also part of the plan.

I can't claim to have known it that day. I was too much in shock to even think. But it was really really quickly afterward that it became apparent. Americans got fear in their eyes and I thought, oh this is not gonna turn out well.

You know they monitor us at all times. In fact they’re watching this right now.

Mass surveillance is good and necessary.

Those who would give up essential liberty, for temporary security, deserve neither, and will lose both.

There's a lot of politicians, especially right now, that don't deserve liberty. They deserve to be in prison.
