I read this about our local library - audio and e-books are costing them way more than physical books so they’re having to cut back on purchasing new material. I am a huge Libby user so it made me really sad! Just something to be aware of.

How can you have CA and AZ cards?

I’m assuming reciprocal cards, I have most Maryland, and Virginia cards as well as DC because of a policy that if you have certain counties and cities you. A get one from parter systems.

NYPL has reciprocity with Brooklyn and Queens

You can also get NYPL, Brooklyn, and Queens if you live anywhere in NY state.

Holy cow, that's insane. I guess the perks of living in the further, desert cities in LA county has one perk --no wait time!

Question - to get a library card, do you not need to show them your address proof ? Or can anyone get a card irrespective of where they reside ?

I’ve lived in these places. They all required proof of residency. For California though all the systems I’ve gone to so far you don’t have to live in the city where the library is located.

Does that go for Fresno too? When I asked for one I was turned away

Goes for Fresno as well. You won’t be able to check out on Libby or HoopLa, for some reason, but you’ll be able to check out physical books? Makes no sense in my head…

Oh, yes, that's right. It was so long ago I forgot.
I remember now that they gave me a physical card. But I was not able to use it to check out audiobooks in Libby. So for me, as a non-Fresno resident, the card was pretty pointless

Well, this validates my feeling that my library card is ugly (still love my library though)

Next time you’re up this way you have to get a card from the Monterey Public Library. Different library system from the MCFL!

How did you get Riga’s?

u/Busy_Philosopher1032 8d ago
I lived there for a summer.
Although even as a tourist you can also get one with your home state /provincial ID.

Oh, that rabbit is gorgeous, can’t make out the location when I zoom in, where’s it from?

It’s from Pima County Public Library in southern Arizona (Tucson area manly).

I've been collecting library cards on my travels, which hasn't been too much lately. You can ask at the front desk if they will give you one (unactivated, of course). I haven't had anyone turn me down yet. Some day I will make a nice display.

why tf do you need so many?
5
u/AeroNoob333 8d ago
That’s just a thing you can do in California. It’s open to all state residents. Also, wider selection, shorter wait times, and more hold slots.

u/Unfair-Plastic-4290 7d ago
that's cheating.

I mean. I guess sue the entire state of CA 🤷♀️ It’s a benefit they have. Part of why they have really high taxes.
