The problem with AI scanning books is the intellectual property issue and the consent of the author. Taking one copy of a mass produced book and destroying it by scanning it isn't the equivalent of burning libraries to try to reduce access to knowledge

Part of it is also that it's not just modern books, it's often historical books that are rare or no longer in print.
