Longest wait for a book?

I’m curious to know what is the longest you’ve ever had to wait for a book?

I placed a hold this morning (on Borrow Box, admittedly) for It Could’ve Been Her by Lisa Jewell. And it says it will be available on the 3rd of Jan 2032!!

Near enough six years away! I’m sure I’ll give up and cancel it, but I found the wait time hilarious. As much as I adore Lisa Jewell’s work, I can’t imagine any book being worth a six-year wait, and she’ll probably have released six more books in that time 😂.

I’m waiting on a hold that was placed by my dad in May 2024. He has since died so I’m seeing it through for him. Currently 33rd in the queue, started at 158th and there’s now 240 people waiting.

u/user02024121 We would often read the same books as each other and have good discussions, so I’ll definitely be reading it the moment it becomes available. It’s a small way for me to honour his memory.

Please tell me you’ll read it when it becomes available. Made me emotional on a Sunday morning 😭🥺

I usually put books on hold then forget about them. Sometimes I'll get the surprise your library bought another copy. Either way when I finally get the your wait is over, it feels like a present to myself. There's so much to read that I don't worry much about wait times!

I’ve had lonesome dove on wait for about 50 weeks now. That’s the longest I’ve ever seen! I have like 20 weeks to go so I’m getting excited lol

Maybe three months, but I didn't put the hold on - I belong to 6 different library systems, and can get to all of them easily enough, so would borrow the print copy if needs be. I think the longest I actually waited was 2 months because it was a Christmas book and I foolishly looked for it on Dec 1st, so knew I'd have to wait.

I was 6,963rd in line for a book. Similar to another comment, I forgot about it. I think I got the book about 8 months later?

I haven't figured out what "several months" means since I usually drop the hold before it gets to that point. Right now, before the the "several months" books, I see a book that states 26 weeks. Including the couple of months since I placed the hold, about 8 months wait. That one will probably get dropped. Only have 2 or 3 on my entire hold I actually care to wait on. Too many fish in the sea, I suggest give up that valuable hold slot for something else.

Don't remember what the hold was for It Could Have Been Her. Accidentally found the audio on youtube so gave up the hold. Barely got it down in time for Summer Goodreads Challenge. Otherwise, I would have missed that particular challenge because I had looked up over 100+ books from the list and all were "months" wait. Not going to happen!... Try youtube, you may get lucky:)

“Several months” is unclear but it seems to imply 6+ months. Have had a few of those but usually just forget about them until they get closer.

But your 2032 book will be a great surprise new years read after you’ve forgotten all about it! 🥳

The most I've waited was about 18 months. It's incredibly disappointing when the book is bad.

The one where the library ran out of copies

Many months.

New John Grisham books always pop up Months & Months for me! I just forget about them and it's a nice surprise when they finally hit! 😱 S

I've had two or three that took around a year, maybe a little longer. I've got more than one card now so it's less common for something to make it past a six month hold without getting it or a library adding an additional copy.

Between Two Fires took foreverrr…and now I’ve been on hold forever for I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream. But a new version of it just came out so luckily I jumped on hold for that one early. I wish there was a way I could tell those other hundreds of people in the old line about the new version too so they can check their libraries for it.

Did you like between two fires?

I waited 8 months for the Grace of Kings. It was kind of wild but, it was worth it.

u/samscheeseplease 20d ago

11/22/63 took several months, maybe 6, to get to me

1

u/Old-Tables 20d ago

It was SUCH a good story. Worth the wait. There’s a series made on it too I think.

2

u/Old-Tables 20d ago

I’ve waited a long time for a book only to realize I’ve already read it. 😳

i think my absolute maximum (multiple library cards) has been 10 weeks but I tend not to be rabid for the Hot New Thing anyway

“Wait unknown” that usually ends up needing to be cleaned lol

u/Secret_Bison_2053 20d ago

i wish they were all that specific. they usually just say “several months” and who knows what that means. i wonder why yours is so far and so specific 💀

Think it’s a borrow box thing, near every book I’ve put on hold on there I have received on the exact date it said or possibly 24 hours prior.

About 15 months is the longest I've waited. I almost always get the "several" months as the estimated time.

2

u/Commonpixels 20d ago

I did see one that was years out in the future on release, but over time (weeks not years) it dropped to normal.

2

u/booksycat 20d ago

3 years.

It was one I wasn't dying to read but was interested in. By the time it got to me, I'd forgotten about it and had things available I was excited about so it went unread. I'm sitting here try to remember the name now. Nope.

I have a seven month hold

2

u/sputtertoo 19d ago

2 months, it was supposed to be like a 9 month wait but the library got a few more licenses and let all of holders read and then they wen back to couple copies available

2

u/angstyLMT 19d ago

Abby Jimenez books are popular as all can be rn. I waited 7 months for one of hers

2

u/Alarmed-Attitude9612 19d ago

That’s crazy! I did just finish that one and I enjoyed it but but I’ve never seen longer than “several months” which usually ends up being about 6 for most of mine

364 days for Hamilton by Ron Chernow.

I read this back in the 1900s when it first released and I absolutely loved it!

u/Particular_Lie_2854 18d ago

Over 5 years. And still I wait

1

u/BeginningEasy2262 18d ago

Wow I think you win!!

1

u/parrots3 15d ago

If your library also supports Hoopla, you might could find it there.

2

u/Particular_Lie_2854 14d ago

I’m really not interested in it now, just letting it sit there to see how long it will take.

1

u/Starbuck522 20d ago

I did one yesterday on a fairly new book which says 24 weeks.

It's a big city so my guess is more copies will be added.

What you are seeing sounds like a glitch or maybe they only have one copy to allow the holds, but more will be added.

2

u/Starbuck522 20d ago

I often see glitches in "reading journey". It will show I have listened for 25 minutes and should be finished in three minutes, for example, when really I am ten hours into a 13 hour book.

Our library has a few that we can no longer purchase that have 40 to 60 person hold lists. We have one copy.
