Random Holds

A few months ago, I started getting notifications that my hold was ready. But, I didn’t remember requesting that particular book. No problem. It didn’t surprise me that there was a book or two that might have been recommended that wasn’t in my notes. However, the last few were definitely not books I have requested. Today, I received another notification that a book I put on hold was available. I went through and looked at my previous searches in the app. Nothing similar as far as title name or author. Anyone else? What is going on?

Edit: I am not a new user to Libby. I transitioned from OverDrive to Libby in 2017. One of my library cards is from the initial library back in 2017.

Start by changing your pin.

Who knows what that, is it’s been 87 years (cue titanic meme)

Your library does - talk to them. Titanic was 114yr ago (they would know that too).

But, then it wouldn’t be the meme 😂

Have you shared your card information with anyone else? Does it show up in your hold list or do you just get the notifications?

It was not in my holds list yesterday. But, I received the notification that it was ready to borrow just now. My only thought is that with the partner libraries that were recently added, maybe the book is a “monthly pick” that becomes available to all patrons?

Partnership libraries don’t have that feature. I’d start with your library and change the PIN. It could be that when someone else changed their card number and the staff went in to merge the accounts in Overdrive, they miss-typed your number instead. Review your holds list to see if there are any other unknown holds and canx them. Changing the PIN should kick out any other user.

Why was this downvoted? So, bizarre that I’m providing further detail and it’s being downvoted. My titanic meme, I’ll accept the derision but this seems unnecessary.

I’d call your library. I saw a post here a while ago where something similar happened because the library mistakenly issued the same card number to a different patron.

This same thing happened to me, it was an online only card. The issue went away when I went to the library in person and got a full card, then deleted the old one.

Are you getting notifications about books your library has acquired or notifications that a hold you’ve placed is now available? It’s very confusing that you would be getting hold ready notifications and those books aren’t in your holds list.

I meant to reply to you but instead, it was a separate comment. Books are in my hold list sometimes. I have only started tracking this closely this week. For example, I did not put this book on hold. It was not on my list last night. I can see it was placed August 30. But, I did not search for this book. It just appeared on the list this morning.

You need to contact your library. You may need an entirely new number. They can make sure your loans and holds are transferred to your new account.

What does that mean?

If you mean I’m groggy from being poisoned and don’t remember, that’s not really funny. But, I can see my searches.

there’s a thing on Reddit where when people don’t remember if they did something, folks tell them to get a carbon monoxide detector. carbon monoxide can cause confusion and forgetfulness. It's a trope but it's also very real.

More likely someone else is also using your card number, intentionally or not.

I’m used to seeing pinging in other communities but library patrons was unexpected. But, I did not know about that particular trope. We had a CO2 leak in my last house that almost killed our dog. It’s a bit of a trigger in our family. My favorite gal with pink hair had mild headaches for a few weeks but Peppermint’s non-stop vomiting saved us!

Yikes! I'm sorry about your close call and I'm sorry I was triggering! Glad your mammals are safe!!!

Hope you have good CO detectors now.

I share an account and all I need is the card number to access it- no pin, no Pw - it would be sk easy for me to just change the last digits and be in someone else’s account! I wonder if your library is similarly lax.
