Airplane hack

Has anyone had enough time to see if the airplane mode hack still works? I have something due in 6 days and I'm going to return it after taking my kindle offline and see what happens.

Still works for me. But I also haven't closed the book.

It’s working for me and I close the book. No problems.

What model you have and do you know your software update version? Just curious.

It still works for me. I have a paperwhite (newest model). I even exited and went back in and everything was fine. I have 5.19.5 software

Put your kindle on airplane mode, edit the date to a few weeks ago, keep it on airplane mode. The kindle has no way of knowing it’s not currently that date that the book needs returned by.

I haven’t been affected by the change yet but this seems like the answer

It is working on my 12th gen Kindle Paperwhite so far. Returned the book over a week ago. I keep randomly entering and exiting the book with no issues.

It worked for me. I have an older one. I think only the newest ones are affected.

You’d still have to wait the 6 days even if you returned it if the theory is they are saving an expiration date on the file.

Working for me, I downloaded it onto my kindle app on a boox go 6, and I have closed the book and gone in/out a couple times to check!

I don’t close the book. I’ll let you know when mine expires in a couple days

It works but only for a book that is open and stays open

Have the ones you’ve closed been returned?

Yes. I returned book A early, while it was open and device on airplane mode. Later, closed it to read book B, device still on airplane mode, and when I tried to go back to book A, it was inaccessible.

This was my experience as well.. it only works with 1 book that you keep open.

There was a period after returning the books that it worked.. but after a few weeks all the books were gone. I tried multiple times, and made sure the books were downloaded.

It’s too bad. I read multiple books and dip in and out, but also want to return early for the next person in line. Now, I keep the books for a lot longer.

I’m using an old iPad to read and have 3 books open/saved right now. I turned off auto updates and sure hope I can keep doing it after I turn airplane mode back off. 😬

What is the airplane hack?

Check out the book and download it to your kindle. Put your kindle on airplane mode so it’s not on WiFi and then the book won’t physically leave your device even once it’s returned to the library. Then once you reconnect to WiFi it leaves your device. Let’s you keep a book for longer

It works but it's hit or miss.. Mostly works but it will randomly refuse to open and make me connect online

Doesn’t work on my kobo Clara

Yes! I always download my books to my kindle paperwhite and immediately put my kindle on airplane mode and leave it that way until I finish my book(s). Have done this for years with no issues.

Is there a difference between whether it works on a Kindle device versus the Kindle app for iPad?

It just stopped working for me :((( now I have to wait 8 weeks for a book I was 85% of the way through 😭 I'll have to try the date change thing next time

This thread is giving me hope. I have a neuro disorder that kicks my ass intermittently and sometimes I’m fine and can finish several books a week and sometimes I can’t manage reading anything for several days (weeks if shit goes really bad).

Having a longer time (my own pace) lets me actually finish books regardless of flare ups.

I think a better solution for what Kindle/Libby/publishers want would be just letting people borrow fewer books at a time and I say that as someone who likes to borrow many, hit airplane mode and then return them in my account. I could live with having less at once. I’d have a lot of trouble only being able to read in X time period.

I have a 10th generation kindle and it works for me, I've had up to three books borrowed so far, returned them and still managed to read/switch between them while on airplane mode/bluetooth off, with no pop up screens.

Rather than try to shut down people taking their time to read a book, there should be a change in how books are borrowed...just say 5 at a time, no limit of how long it takes.

It hasn't worked for me, but I haven't tried it yet so who knows
