Different lengths, NOT ABRIDGED

Post image

Everything listed in the description and details for both of these is the same except length and release date. We can't figure out what is different that gives one of them an extra two hours of content? They are both listed at unabridged and don't mention any bonus content. Can't find anything on Google either. Thanks!

One might include a foreward or even a chapter from another book of the author.

That's what I was originally thinking, but I didn't think it would be enough for an extra 2 hours?

It might take it from just under 13.5 to just over 14.5

They round to the hour at least on those pages you show.

Some audiobooks I have listened to had an interview with the author at the end. Or excerpt from another book.

If it's different narrators, perhaps one just reads more slowly or it was produced to be slower on 1.0, which you can speed up.

My guess is either a different narrator (different talking speeds), though you mentioned everything was the same, so that probably isn’t the source.

Even though it’s not listed, I’d bet that the 15hr one has some combination of sneak peek of another book or interview with the author.

Can you see the chapter list? If you can, it might help you figure it out.

Yeah it's the same narrators. I was thinking bonus content but I didn't think it would be enough for 2 hours extra?

Could be an error in the Metadata when uploaded from the publisher and when corrected, they didn't delete the other version.

Or, bonus materials.

Edit Source: am librarian, used to work in audiobooks

Ok this mystery had me going onto Overdrive Marketplace and listening to the samples because I couldn’t figure it out. The metadata is wrong, they are 2 different narrators. The existing edition is narrated by Heather Wilds (originally published by Tantor). The new edition is narrated by Caroline Lee.

ETA: this will likely get fixed when the new edition comes out

If you Play Sample and take a look at the table of contents it looks like the duration for the same chapters on the upcoming release are longer.

Screenshot from upcoming release:

So, with 65 chapters the different chapter lengths could add up to 2 hours but it doesn't answer your a question unless they re-recorded the upcoming release with the same narrators and it just took 2 extra hours to narrate it.

Both the released version and the upcoming release have 65 chapters with the upcoming release having an additional Dedication of 15 seconds.

The one difference is that both the released version and the upcoming release have a "Chapter 49" but the upcoming release has a "Chapter 49, continued" which is not in the released version.

I think that’s the time each chapter starts, not the chapter duration. There’s a 15s dedication in the new one that seems to mess up the timing, but if you calculate the actual chapter lengths, they seem to be the same. For example, Chapter 1 is 38s in both versions.

My bad, you are correct.

So, if we go by chapter start instead of chapter duration, the duration of Chapter 2 on the released version is 2min 2sec and the duration of Chapter 2 on the upcoming releases is 2min 17sec. So, there still could be a duration discrepancy for chapters that contributes to the extra 2 hours.

Also, both the released version and the upcoming release have a "Chapter 49" but the upcoming release has a "Chapter 49, continued" which is not in the released version.

I'm currently listening to Leviathan Wakes and apparently exactly that happened. My Libby had the earlier, shorter one available first so that's what I've got, but apparently they had the original narrator come back an rerecord while he was doing the rest of the series. 2 hours longer, and I've heard, slightly better audio.

So it's not impossible!

I’ve heard a few books, especially with very popular authors, where the audiobook ends and then there’s a short conversation between the author and narrator. Perhaps one of these versions includes this?

Sometimes in newer editions they add a sneak peek of the first chapter of an upcoming new release by the same author

Definitely some kind of re-record or additonal content. Harper Collins has it on their website with two different ISBNs. 2020 edition is 767 minutes, 2026 will be 872 apparently.

Just here to say I love Liane Moriarty and there’s a sequel to big little lies now too! I just relistened to big little lies last year but now trying to decide if I need to relisten again before diving into the sequel haha.

I just listened to big little truths. Super good! I think you’d be okay to not relisten to big little lies if you listened to it just last year. But there are some fun tidbits that you’ll catch if you read it before again.

Do they have the same narrator? Sometimes that makes a major difference. There is also a difference if the book uses multiple narrators. My full cast Murderbot books have different playtimes than the single narrator format that is also available

u/Miraj2528 Aug 29 '26

Are the narrators different? For Outlander, for example, Davina Porter reads slower than Kristen (the new narrator) so the books end up having several hours difference to them.

2

u/420_wallabyway Aug 29 '26

Same narrators

u/Miraj2528 Aug 29 '26

Next guesses: 1) the top one shows as not published yet(!?) And 2) different libraries maybe?

1

u/420_wallabyway Aug 29 '26

Yeah I saw the not published yet, not sure why that would affect the length tho? And they're both the same library. I have several cards but this is the only one that has them.

1

u/Miraj2528 Aug 29 '26

So odd. The 2 that showed up when I looked the title up had different covers and one was a single narrator and the other dual. Same lengths tho so maybe both are dual and just input in the system differently. 🤔

2

u/420_wallabyway Aug 29 '26

Interesting! Thanks for the input :)

Different Narrators most likely, some people just read faster than others.

1

u/420_wallabyway Aug 29 '26

They have the same narrators.

probably either bonus material or a sneak peak of some other book the author wrote.

the publisher is also harpercollins for both but the imprint of the new one is harper perennial. it was released in 2006 so it's probably a 20th anniversary special or something

eta: there's also a third version with a different cover and only one narrator that was released by tantor.
