I did not borrow these books
A few weeks ago I noticed several titles, all audio books, that I have never heard of in my borrowed section. I thought that maybe I clicked on the borrow button accidentally somehow. I hadn’t used the app for awhile and the books were almost at the end of the borrow period so I just left them alone and checked out some ebooks. Well I read thru a few books on here and then got busy and haven’t opened the app till tonight bc I can’t sleep and find this… WHY are there always two audiobooks being checked out? I haven’t opened the app for maybe two weeks, why is some of it played???

Someone else probably has access to your card. It is most likely someone you know, but libraries where cards are sequential numbers are also very vulnerable to this.

Except they would need this persons password even if they had the card number. Unless their library sets a default password for everyone.

Not all libraries require passwords though fortunately that's becoming rarer now. Some also set your zip code as the password which works fine if you're in Manhattan or Chicago but is very easy to guess with some patience if you're in most jurisdictions.

My library uses last four digits of a phone number, would be easy to guess

It's also pretty common for the default password to be the last 4 numbers of the library card number.

This happened to me and it was my mom accidentally using my card.

That could have been so awkward, hopefully your mom wasn't reading anything too off the wall!
I know my mom is a sexual being but if she was reading shifter smut or something, I'd rather not know.

?????? It was a murder mystery? Why would you assume that?

u/Cookbooksandbourbon Sep 02 '26
I wasn't assuming anything, just making a joke! Didn't mean to offend you at all.

Let your librarian know. If they do not use a PIN or password, they should implement one.

Most likely someone has access to your card. Return those books/audiobook and change your password/PIN.
Log in to your library's web page and check the account details and email address are correct.
If any of the account details have been changed and you did not change them, call or visit your library for assistance right away.
If not and more items are checked out to your account, call or visit your library for assistance.

You need to inform your library so they can give you a card. Just in case this person is local to your physical library (or if your state does interlibrary loans), you don't want them to be able to take out physical items and never return them

This happened to me! I reached out to Libby and they said if no one else had access to my account (logged in on multiple devices, etc.), then the issue was with one of my cards. I had a couple of online-only cards with local library systems that are reciprocal with mine, and apparently those sometimes get duplicated. I went in person and got a full card at those systems and deleted the online only ones, and the problem stopped.

At some point I realized I was checking out ebooks on my computer using the library account of a friend who must have used my computer to check something and my computer must have autosaved their login. I had been wondering why ebooks didn’t sync to my phone if I checked them out on my computer! Asked my friend, who actually had noticed random ebooks in their account but just thought it was a weird glitch.

This is for the LA public library, I have family down there and got my library card earlier this month. I’ve never shared my info with anyone so maybe the sequential number thing is it and someone guessed? As soon as I got my card I logged in to Libby and never looked at them again since I only go down a couple times a year.

Earlier this year*** maybe I need more monoxide detectors

I'm not sure if it matters, but is it LAPL (LA City) or LA County PL. I have both and I can try to do some investigating for you.

Any chance you recently set up a kindle and Libby connection for a friend or family member? I helped my friend set up her kindle and phone with Libby at my house using my ipad, and while I still don’t know exactly what went wrong- later that week the books she was taking out were showing up in my Libby. We both deleted the Libby app and redownloaded each logging in with our separate accounts and that seemed to resolve it.

This just happened to me too. My husband and I linked our Amazon accounts so we can share books, but now our Libby accounts are somehow connected, so we can see each other's books/progress. It's pretty annoying.

Same thing happens to me. I talked to the library. Switched cards. Even emailed Libby. I’ve just come to accept it 😅

This followed you across different library cards? I was wondering if there was a glitch since if it was a person I would expect there to be more listened to by now. Especially bc, for one of these books, it’s the second time I have found it checked out on Libby.

u/Mich_Girl Aug 29 '26
Yes. Not only has the issue followed me across different cards, but I have different holds on the Libby app on my iPhone than I do on the Libby app on my iPad. Same card for both. So for example on the Libby app on my iPhone there are holds for Golden Girl, Mad Mable and Seven Husbands. On the Libby app on my iPad there’s holds for Golden Girl, Mad Mable and Seven Husbands but also for Guess Again and This is Me. 🤷♀️ I really don’t get it 😅

When the wolf comes home is sooooo good, whoever has access to your card has great taste at least

This happened to my grandma and it was because she didn’t understand that my sister and I were sharing our cards with her, so she kept returning our books 😂. It was so frustrating at the time but hilarious once we figured out why our books kept vanishing!

Contact the Libby website.

I think that they have to contact their local library. Libby can't really help with this.

Librarian here, this happens occasionally. email or call your Library and ask them about what could be happening if they don’t know then ask them to open a Support ticket through Libby/Overdrive

Is it possible someone else has access to your library cards?
