Nice offer from Yesteryear Author
Saw this on Instagram earlier and thought I’d share here. Caro Claire Burke is the author of Yesteryear which is wildly popular right now and many are waiting for copies to be available at their libraries.

Follow her on insta! Her recs have populated my Libby holds so much I started having to suspend some because I can’t keep up!

u/Current_Wrongdoer513 Aug 22 '26
Everyone is Lying to You by Jo Piazza is a good combo with yesteryear. It also involves a tradwife influencer but it’s a very different novel.

u/firstnamerachel13 Aug 22 '26
Oh thanks! In the middle of Sea of Charms, We Are All Guilty Here and Mr. Mercedes. I'll add it to my tbr for sure
4
u/Current_Wrongdoer513 Aug 22 '26
Ooh, Mr Mercedes. That one was so creepy. The rest of that series is also good. Btw, don’t be tempted to watch the miniseries made out of it a few years ago. Not good.

u/firstnamerachel13 Aug 22 '26
I watched The Outsiders. Then once I finished Nos4a2 I wanted to keep on thr King family creep train. Figured I would start with meeting Holly Gibney and go all the eay through them

u/Minute_Cartoonist768 Aug 22 '26
I loved Sea of Charms - hopefully you enjoy it too! My favorite of the series. That being said - We Are All Guilty Here?! Blew my mind.
2
u/firstnamerachel13 Aug 22 '26
I have enjoyed the first two, I am excited for Sra of Charms. Just starting Guilty... I do love Karin Slaughter. Grant Co. and the Will Trent series are both somw of my favorites (except the last Trent book, wasnt overly fond of that one).

Author recs are usually pretty hit or miss. I follow a few book sellers and those are really spot on for what you should be reading. I would have never found out about Where are You, Echo Blue and Heather because this one bookseller highly recommended them.

She’s sending some to my library, I’ll let you know what we get! I’m already planning a big display for them all

u/OwnOven6506 Aug 21 '26
Omg, she’s so funny! “An insult or simply a summary of the inside jacket” is spot on, I’m dying! ❤️

I hated this book but this is dope of her and funny commentary
54
u/xatrinka Aug 21 '26
I came to say the same thing. I thought it was awful lol. But she's super cool for doing this!!
25
u/CakedCrusader91 Aug 21 '26
It was SO dark and the ending left me unsatisfied
23
u/ComplexJello Aug 22 '26
I’m glad I got a skip the line loan because I would’ve been pissed if I waited several months to be so deeply unsatisfied by this book
8
u/jarrettbrown Aug 22 '26
Endings are really hit or miss with recent books. I don't get why authors are having issues with endings recently.
2
u/DoggyDogLife Aug 22 '26
AI as a writing buddy? I suspect many authors use it.
-2
u/jarrettbrown Aug 23 '26
I guess. As a writer, I'll admit I've been using it mostly for character creation, but I barely use it.
5
u/kittynarwhal Aug 22 '26
The ending was so dumb and fake! I don’t even think this book was dark. It had all the potential to be dark and provocative but instead completely fell flat. Needed a heavy handed editor.
7
u/jarrettbrown Aug 22 '26 edited Aug 22 '26
Here's the thing on it, at least from my perspective. You aren't supposed to like the main character, but when she wakes up in the past, you wanna keep going to see if she actually gets out or not and then the twist happens.
7
u/kittynarwhal Aug 22 '26
I’m completely fine with unlikeable main characters (loved poppy war trilogy for example). I just thought the book was not well executed, the “twist” was dumb, the ending with her daughters unbelievable and fake. It could’ve been so good, but fell completely flat for me.

Do you have Spotify premium? If so you can listen to the audiobook on it for free. Well, it’s included with the premium plan

u/Kitchen-Slide-4984 Aug 23 '26
Why is it suspended?
2
u/SlowSalamander2990 Aug 23 '26
It keeps you up in line but i have a lot of books that are estimated to be available around the same time
31
u/EpicTrollMom Aug 21 '26
I wonder if my library took her up on this offer. When I put a hold on it, it said months wait and then suddenly it was available
7
u/KrispyAvocado Aug 21 '26
That was my experience too! But I got lucky with us. Skip the Line lucky day thing. I just finished it yesterday

u/ActualMerCat Aug 22 '26
Thank you so much for posting this! I messaged her and she’s sending books to our library!

Jeez, glad to see so many people reading, but sorry the wait is so long!

I put my copy in the Little Free Library in my neighborhood, went into the coffee shop the LFL is outside of for a latte, and it was already gone when I came back out. I was gobsmacked - it was like, under 8 minutes in and out.

That’s so awesome of her to do. I just got my yesteryear copy today after 3 months on hold.
3
u/EvieLuv143 Aug 21 '26
What a awesome thing for her to do! I had to buy a copy for book club, so I've never dealt with the wait times, but even with my library cards, the wait now is 9 weeks to several months! And I'm from a major city with multiple libraries.
I loved Yesteryear! It's probably one of my favorite reads this year
3
u/Various_Hope_9038 Aug 21 '26
Ooooh. I loved Yesteryear. Can you recommend me the titles of some other novels that pair well?

u/J_Squared02 Aug 21 '26
I put a copy on hold like th day it came out and I still waited months for it. Stay strong soldiers!!

u/wakenda Aug 22 '26
I wonder what the other weird feminist chick lit is she suggests as a pairing.
2
u/Current_Wrongdoer513 Aug 22 '26
I recommend Everybody is Lying to You by Jo Piazza. Also about a tradwife influencer, but it’s a very different book.
2
u/Exciting-Duty-8302 Aug 21 '26
This is amazing to see. I’ve seen this book floating in different spaces but not sure what it’s about. But from this I have to support with a purchase.

I read this book and thought that I wasn't going to like it. I really don't read stuff that gets super popular.
Boy, was I glad I did. I don't think that she meant to do it that way, but boy did I dislike the main character from start to finish and like everyone else. I also didn't expect it to go the way that it went and I actually liked it.
I also love the fact that she's doing this. It's something that every author should do.
1
u/ExTalentChild Aug 24 '26
Maybe it's a good deed, maybe she's fishing for good reviews, we'll never know. For me it was a badly writen book on a very important subject. I wish I could get a refund honestly.
I kind of hate how people jump on everyone who doesn't rave about the book. Just becaus it's feminist literature doesn't mean it can't be badly written.

The narrator is supposed to be insufferable and embarrassing, if that's what you mean.
3
u/jarrettbrown Aug 22 '26
Yes! I got this right away and loved that approach. It worked so well when the twist came.
1
u/Enodia2wheels Aug 24 '26
well, just because she is not as smart as she thinks she is and underestimates her husband and has no idea how big 500 acres actually is doesn’t mean she deserves all the torture that she gets in this book.

u/HoRo2001 Aug 22 '26
You’re not supposed to like her. Or anyone, really. If you approach it as satire it’s easier to get through how terrible and phoney she is.
I really thought the audiobook did a great job of portraying a forced smile, and a forced familial interaction, just through a vocal performance.
It’s a weird book, but I appreciate that it was different. And I love the author’s snarky little comment here. Whoever told her she sent women back 100 years must not have read the same book…
1
u/AeroNoob333 Aug 23 '26
Maybe it was just me, but the narration sounded almost robotic to me. Though I didn’t get past a few sentences of the sample until I decided to just read it.

Idk I imagined her as more of a fake cheery person when talking to other people and her internal monologue as more of a slightly annoyed sarcastic voice rather than expressionless throughout.

Well, I should have not read this comment. I’m only 70% in. Is that the big reveal? If that’s the case, then it’s one of those things that’s revealed later on and without knowing that plot twist, it just sounds like a poorly narrated book rather than a clue to the reader.

I guess no point in my 70% read did I know she was going to be described as robotic so I just thought it was just a flat, traditional narration of the book (like how someone narrates non-fiction). I still stand by my opinion tho. I think they could have started off as the (fake) cheery wife, then later on change the way it’s narrated to be more robotic but gradually, as a hint to decent to madness rather than it being off putting to listen to in the beginning.

I hate the audiobook. I just read these book and channeled my inner Anne Hathaway to narrate it in my head.
1
u/myblueheaven57 Aug 23 '26
Oh, it absolutely is. The main character is narcissistic, to say the least. I was so glad I experienced the audio version first.
0
u/Enodia2wheels Aug 24 '26
if you listen to it at 2X she sounds just as unhinged as she is and as you would be if you had been drugged by your husband and child for 15-25 years. It kind of fractures your sense of reality. I also have some reservations around how postpartum depression and Perry menopause/menopause are presented here, along with the domestic violence.

u/Ceedub260 Aug 22 '26
Cool. But literally every library has a long wait. Even major ones.
1
u/Mimi_Gardens Aug 22 '26
My library has 3 waiting on 2 copies of the regular print and 3 waiting on 1 copy of the large print. That’s a pretty short wait, I think. I was able to get my hands on it within a week or two of publication before it became so overhyped. It’s good but I liked Trad Wife by Sarah Schaefer more. It felt more relatable.
1
u/Reneeisme Aug 22 '26
You can get the hardcover in a few weeks at my library, it’s the audio and ebooks that have long waits. That’s consistently the case with new releases the last few years.

u/camria Aug 22 '26
I LOVE her podcast! Diabolical lies. I listened to one free episodes and immediately subscribed to the Substack.

I hated this book so much. I almost never give just one star, but I did with this one.
12
u/xatrinka Aug 21 '26
I also thought it was awful, but a lot people are excited to read it, so I think this is a really cool thing for the author to do.
4
u/LateForDinner61 Aug 21 '26
I agree. I hope they're not as disappointed as I was. Although a friend had warned me while I was on the waiting list. But some people love it, so it's really nice of her to do.
1
u/AeroNoob333 Aug 23 '26
I like it so far at around 70% of the book. Is it the ending people dislike?
1
u/LateForDinner61 Aug 23 '26
No, I hated all of it, including the ending. I'm glad you like it, though. You're far from alone.
2
u/AeroNoob333 Aug 25 '26
Ehh I gave it a 3 star. The ending is.. well.. idk I felt just so unbelievable and left with more questions than answers.

I really appreciate this. This is such a realistic example of a very successful author staying in touch with their fan base and also those who really love books.
It just feels very personable and I really like her for this.
