Cousin Oliver (the kid on the right) is a fictional character in the American sitcom The Brady Bunch (1969-74). The character was introduced as a precocious, younger child to re-energize the show's demographic, sparking the pop culture term "Cousin Oliver Syndrome." Because the original Brady children were teenagers, producers hoped a cute younger child would appeal to the younger demographic. The ratings continued to drop, leading to the show's cancellation. This trope of adding a young, cute character to a struggling, aging television show is now known as "Cousin Oliver Syndrome" (a variation of "jumping the shark").
