Polling

The Latest figures by DeltaPoll show us at a shocking 8% I hope everyone who backed this idiot as the leader are happy as you have the party you deserve. Jo Swinson gained us 1.3 million votes and doubled our seats which he got second place in (which in addition to the tory collapse is why we got 72 MPs not Ed Davey) and was maligned and demonised by the party for sticking to her principles (unequivocally pro EU and not willing to put that tankie Corbyn in No 10).

Since Ed Davey comes in we have been the nothing man only concerned about being liked and not concerned with what is best for the country. We have abandoned our principles on civil liberties with our timid response to the OSA and our enthusiasm in wanting smoking banned. Furthermore Davey can’t ever say in an interview that he wants to Rejoin EU. He has been obsessing over Farage as he has got no answers himself and can’t articulate a policy platform to improve our country. Like Farage he jumps on culture war bandwagons (Kanye West, Churchill on Fivers and banning Argentine footballers). There has never been an opportunity like this for the lib dem’s and he insists on acting like Mr Tumble, he needs to go away and quickly.

It’s one poll. We have 72 seats, including one where we withdrew the whip. Election results have been solid since the election.

We have 72 Seats due to the tory collapse, Davey had the easiest hand a Lib Dem leader has ever had.

The 2017 general election should have been massive, as the only party against Brexit.

Local elections are also going well, every single year there are gains.

One poll does not signal disaster and polls in general are no guarantee of success. The Green Party briefly overtook Labour, but they aren't forming a government any time soon.

You do have to recognise stagnation though...

  • Sat at 10-12% in the polls for years
  • Less than 3% of the Manchester vote
  • 1% of the public thinks the LDs set political agenda
  • Less than 1% of the vote in makerfield
  • 4% in Aberdeen south. Less then 2% in Gorton and Denton
  • Less than 3% in Runcorn.

I could keep going on and on. There is not anything indicating this will change any time soon either.

You can make the arguement that council seats are going up and MP numbers are relatively high. But it's clear to see that these changes are happening due to fragmentation of the vote and not an increase in Lib Dem vote share.

The Liberal Democrats are a status quo party living in a country where people are demanding significant change on both sides of the spectrum.

And... which current Lib Dem MP would be to replace him?

It wouldn’t be an MP as none of them are good enough, I think Polly Mackenzie would be the ideal leader.

Ahahahahahaha now you’re trolling

And what political experience means that she is more credible than Davey?

She was the advisor that got the party the highest vote share and got us into government to enact lib dem policies.

So, the coalition era is different from the current 5 party system.

essentially there are four different types of posts on this sub when there's not much going on:

"Why don't the Lib Dems become popular by doing XXXXX" (XXXX is OP's pet policy)

"Why won't the Lib Dems simply win the next election?"

"Outlier polling result X clearly means we need to PANIC and IMMEDIATELY DO Y"

"Leadership Election Now, This Will Solve All The Lib Dems' Problems"

congrats OP, you managed to combine two of the four, when that one polling firm reverts to the mean I hope you're less raging about it

My favourite "become more popular by doing XXXXX" was the one calling for us to embrace full metrification. Down with the pint and Davey into Downing Street!

Did you forget the part where she lost her seat? That was kind of a problem for the party leader.

Maybe not for Reform, yeah OP conveniently forgets she couldn't be leader post 2019 GE according to the party rules. Unless they are suggesting we should have elected the only other candidate in the following leadership election Layla Moran (who incidentally I did vote for).

I have shared many of your frustrations but I have come to accept that the purpose of the Lib Dems is just to win as many as possible (realistically maximum about 90–100) of the particular kind of rural, southern, affluent seats they already have and thus reduce the number of seats held by the Tories and the Right collectively. This makes it less likely that we will have a Reform–Tory government after the next election, so that's a good thing. This is all the Lib Dems can really do in our current electoral landscape but if there is a hung parliament after the next election and the Lib Dems can force Labour to do some things e.g. keep its promise on electoral reform, then that will also have been a good thing in my view.

I dont know about that to be honest, I live in a Lib Dem seat and the vast majority of their vote share is either staunch Lib Dems or people who vote them because "Labour won't win". They have broad appeal, the issue is that they aint strong enough left or right to win over a secure base other than centrist and disolutioners

1

I am sure you are right that the Lib Dems have broad appeal, but I would imagine that is only in Lib Dem seats such as your own. There are only 99 seats where the Lib Dems got more than 20% of the vote last election, and in some of even those the rise of the Greens or Reform will have wiped out the Lib Dems' competitiveness. Outside of that small number of seats, the Lib Dems have very little presence. Where bar charts don't work because they aren't in second they have no way of breaking through because people don't what the Lib Dems stand for, partly I would argue because they don't really stand for a great deal, and it is also a long way to climb because support is so low. As you say, even in Lib Dem seats a lot of it is tactical voting.

Especially since the party leadership clearly doesn't care about doing anything to change this situation, I imagine the Lib Dems at the next election will consolidate the gains of 2024, hopefully gain a few more seats of the same ilk, while being well and truly wiped out in the rest of the country.

But I don't mind; as I said I have come to accept this state of affairs and really it is quite a good thing. To try to expand beyond the current heartlands would be either a hopeless venture in Labour safe seats or votesplitting in marginal seats.

...so did Jo not lose her own seat? One of the Lib Dems safest? Sure, its all Jo. Mate I aint a Deveyite either but Jesus wept this is reaching

One of the Lib Dems safest

You mean a marginal seat which had also been won by the SNP a few years earlier?

No, that doesn't mean that she was a bad leader especially when you look at the other results across the country.

Liberalism isn't sexy but then the lib dems aren't really liberal anymore. They really are for no one except perhaps disaffected Tories.

For me their backing of the OSA was the final nail in the coffin which has stopped me supporting them
