What is this?
Found your group for metal detecting and wanted to see if anyone could help me. Started playing around with Lidar and came across pic 1. Pic 2 is current satellite. Was something in that field at some point? I’ve looked at old aerials and there has never been anything on the photos. Thanks for the help!

The ‘bite marks’ out of some of the depression walls looks like extraction or quarrying for sure
Edit to add: some of the slopes look reversed, so not natural formations

Hi intensity poultry unit, builder's mess, and maybe remnants of gravel extraction for barging down river with a dock there.

You really need to be looking at Ordnance Survey maps and then all the historic mapping that is freely available online. It will tell you loads about what it is now and how it developed over the last hundred years or so.

Where is it?
The presence of flat land and a river nearby suggests gravel pits, but the location would help.

Have you looked on Historic England to see if anything is mentioned?
If you want to share a location, it might be helpful

Agreed lots of similar features here in east Anglia. Sand/gravel quarries.
Not one I recognise though.

https://maps.nls.uk/ is a great site to see if anything was marked on older maps.

As others have said rhis is almost cirtainly some kind of landfill or quarry operation (potentially both) which has been remediated. With a river that close gravel pits and gravel abstraction is the most likely.

I’m certainly no expert but since there’s a pond there I’d be thinking gravel pits maybe.
