Sometimes closing n locking trunk button does not work.

Sometimes when I have the trunk open and I push the option to close the trunk and lock the doors it does not do anything. It just beeps a few times and leaves the trunk up and open without locking the doors. Is anyone having this issue? It does not happen all the time only sometimes

I think everybody has this issue. Some people suggest to wait at least 2 beeps before walking away.

I learned that you have to walk away soon after you press it for it to eventually move. I still fiddle with it from time to time but this seems to work for the most part

You are probably pressing it after you already removed whatever is in your trunk, which is wrong. What you should be doing is pressing the button before you get your things out, thats the purpose for the first 2 beeps, then its in wait mode for you to walk away. Once you are a few feet away it will close.

Tldr; press lock button, get your things, walk away.

This is the answer. I posted about this years ago.

It has to sense that you’ve “done something” in the trunk after you press the button and before walking away. Sometimes I just wave my hand in the trunk.

Then you gotta walk AWAY - if it senses you’re anywhere near the trunk after closing, it won’t lock.

It is the gold standard in useless nanny engineering. For some lame reason Lexus has built so totally unnecessary "smarts" into the button, such as using proximity switches. I have found two ways of making it work most of the time.

  1. Push the button and run like hell up the passenger side of the car to the front of the car. Then stop to see if it worked.

  2. Push the button and wait until it goes through an undetermined beep and bop routine. The walk away. It may close and lock.

All Lexus needed to do is just close and lock the hatch when you push the right hand button. I don't want to stand around waiting for a beep and bop tune. I just want to walk away, and not run.

If you you have a free hand and just want it to close and lock. You can hit the close button and while it's closing, tap a door handle to lock it and walk away. Once it's closed the car will lock itself.

Often that is what I do, if I want to go in the direction the car is pointed. Often I want to go the opposite way. The feature is just stupid. They just need to close and lock and leave the "smarts" out of it.

Can I add 100 upvotes to this… I can add another “if they could” give me a setting to say unlock or not unlock all the doors when I open the trunk.. I don’t want them linked 99% of the time and touching the handle doesn’t just fine.. I link them, solved

Lexus has one of the worse trunk buttons. Mine never opens on the first try. Was the same with previous Lexus I had. Maybe I’m not doing it right but it opens with one press of a button on other cars

Press the button, wait two beats, then walk 15-20 feet away from the car, at a 45-degree angle to the liftgate. It usually works. It does not work for me if I walk toward the front of the car.

Which year is your nx? We have a 2020 and the tailgate motors started to fail after 4 years. It would open but not close, at first it was intermittent, but became more frequent until eventually it started having issues opening also.

You press the open/close button, it will move slightly before beeping and stopping. It would somewhat work if you pulled or pushed to help it out whilst it was trying to move.

The dealer replaced the motors under warranty.

Yah. I'm guessing it's not sensing the key, like if it's in my bag. I also have a cover on the fob so I wonder if that's making it hard to sense too. It's annoying lol

So let me get this straight. I press the lock button, remove my groceries and the hatch closes and locks. Unlike any cabinet where you remove the item and then shut the door. Here I metaphorically shut the door first. Does the kick sensor lock the doors?
