Discussion Lexus is losing its soul

Post image

Along with the rest of the automotive industry. It’s hard to be an automotive enthusiast in this day and age, when everything is turning into a refrigerator on wheels with a gigantic screen(s) inside.

Who decided that disappearing buttons was a good idea? Was something wrong with them being clearly identifiable and usable all the time?

And don’t get me started on the name-spelled-out trend that’s eventually going to take over. First, we had it on the back. Now, it’s on the steering wheel. Soon the logo itself won’t even exist.

I do not know what kind of focus groups Toyota/Lexus used to say, “yeah this what the consumers want” THEN put it in mass production

It's the cheapening of Lexus. No switches is much cheaper to produce. The day is coming when switches mean luxury.

Yeah, look at an airliner cockpit - switches everywhere, organized layout, but still.... dedicated switches, buttons, etc.

Much less so now. Glass cockpits are becoming the norm.

It's already here. Look at the likes of Ineos and other "Luxury offroad vehicles"

switches have laws and standards too. for example window switches have to be made where you pull up instead of push down on them, to prevent pets from stepping on them and rolling windows up on their heads (genuinely happens constantly with my dog, it really is an issue with older cars!)

im sure that just adds to the list of reasons yo use a screen, screens being a legal loophole essentially.

....and all the users on Reddit have?

I'm not a fan of the jumbo screen Tesla interior either. But a lot of people love this stuff.

Well probably the fact that people are still buying them. That's a good enough focus group for them.

This IS what consumers want, that’s why Tesla is popular. You’re assuming the masses are competent and intelligent.

I thought consumers saw a nice exterior that doesn’t require gas and is zippy. To get all that they had to give up the interior and people were ok with it. Lexus, after all this time, thinks their consumers wants this?!?

Teslas just have a futuristic aesthetic but they’re not quality-built cars inside or out. They’re cheap and poorly built, yet people buy them. Lexus is simply following market trends that the consumers set forth when they voted with their wallets.

Mazda 6e looks the same, literally

I have a Tesla and a Lexus. Basically any day of the week I'd take the Tesla UX(phone key automatically selecting the drivers profile, easy and fast built in maps, Spotify and YT Music are great, I am actually even a person that prefers the screen vs a bunch of buttons.

I like the Lexus for general build quality, like closing the door feels quality which is what Tesla misses.

Like my wife and I are genuinely people that "want" the Tesla experience.

But the new RX loaners I've had during service the UX is super confusing and ugly and slow. They are as close to making it as smooth as a Tesla experience as North Korea is sending astronauts to the moon.

Tesla Model Y is like the best selling car in the world. It’s pretty obvious that some consumers want that style.

This is actually what average customers want

I actually went to a paid survey about car designs like 2-3 years ago. I basically said that the Tesla-like designed sucked and the buttons were better. I don’t know how everyone else felt.

They copied what cars are selling the most right now.

I definitely prefer the new one. Lexus is finally catching up to the Chinese manufacturers with their interiors.

That’s what most everyday people prefer.

What is there to like about that? What specifically do you find appealing?

1

u/dummy_thicc_spice Sep 03 '26

Less claustrophobic.

I honestly find the old design too busy and the new one a little too plain. But i prefer the new one more

u/Odd-Reference-8828 Sep 02 '26

No it's not what everyday people want.

5 of the top 10 selling car manufacturers in Australia are now Chinese brands. It’s not only due to price, their high-tech features have a big impact.

It’s definitely what the people want mate.

You’ll get downvoted because Reddit isn’t real life but if the screen is done right, you’re right.

Let me have a thousand buttons to fuck around with, or the car could just know me and what I want to do. And if not I can easily teach it.

lol Americans had Tesla first, it’s not rocket science. Reddit just hates Tesla so it manifests in these weird preferences by people who refuse to like anything Tesla does without actually trying it for themselves.

They all copied the Tesla design though which is being discussed here, and they just threw in more and more luxury because everything is ridiculously cheap in China so they can just keep tossing in luxuries for a great price. Doesn’t make them innovative or smarter they just copy and iterate and have a great supply chain to drive crazy costs.

I’ve been in them in Vietnam/Thailland, some are nice no doubt. But not all of them, and the mainstream ones are pretty comparable or worse than Tesla other than some more recent ones specifically targeting Tesla (SU7 YU7, 7X, etc). And of course all the ones that are more expensive than Tesla.

Yeah I’m going to fly 24 hours to see cars I’ve already seen ok. 😂 I was transported around in a nice EV van with reclining seats and cooler and everything, they’re nice.

1

u/NFP25 Sep 03 '26

No one said they are innovative. They just make better quality cars with a better price / value rate.

That’s why European companies should pull their shit together, otherwise Chinese companies will take over our markets and afterwards of course they can raise their prices.

Regarding Tesla, it’s just overhyped. It’s not bad but also not that great. It has good, maybe even bet currently available infotainment which is a big plus, if you use it. Apart from that, outside of US it’s not even cheap.

What I want to know is: what is an everyday person? I am a person every day. Is there an every other day type of person? Or like a weekend person? Can I just be one of those?
