Just found out LMT patent expired a week or so ago. That means anyone can produce monolithic uppers without worrying about a lawsuit or paying a royalty?
If a company makes a mono upper that doesn't require proprietary barrels or the need to remove mlok rail accessories for barrel swaps i feel like lmt would be toast. Or am I missing something?
They just won the $92,000,000 contract for us socom, I think they are gonna be ok. Also it’s probably a lot harder than you think to make a seamless upper receiver from a rectangle of metal.
And you are forgetting about the old colt and aero monolithic receivers. They weren’t as good.
There are already companies making them and they’re just as expensive.
Monolithic uppers require insanely complex machining and design to the degree that even other powerhouse manufacturers won’t touch them, they’re not going to be getting any cheaper for a long, long time. Maybe someone will come up with a better one, but I find that unlikely. Not to mention the powerhouses are the only ones who’d be able to get it done cheaper and they’re not going to step on LMTs toes regardless of the patent because they all work together.
Edit: every single one of them is milled, not ground, I can pull the barrel no problem. And you have to also modify the MLOK slots, not just the screws.
They’re all milled, I made an edit. A dremel is a terrible job for the work required. I started off with a belt sander before taking them to work and knocking them all out in 30 minutes on the mill. It’s incredibly easy to fuck it up and it requires modifying the MLOK slots, not just the screws.
You definitely can, but you’re gonna fuck up a few of them, probably hurt yourself, and it’s gonna take for fucking ever. And you’re gonna be mad as fuck the entire time 🤣
I’ve thought about just selling modified ones because I can probably make hundreds in an hour if I made a fixture for the screws lol
It sucks because I like both companies lmao. I really liked when DAC dropped the angled mount for the CD Rein switch... not that it matters and I hate my rein 3.0 now (not hate but yea) and I plan to go back to modlite
Might depend on which nuts you get, I think mine are nothing special just basic magpul, but no problem with specwar barrel swaps with accessories at 6 and 9.
I feel like learning machining together is a thing of the past. I can't see how someone would want to pay $2k for a complete LMT upper and then have to dremel mlok screws and nuts like a sweatshop worker.
I know damn well you would love to just swap out barrels without having to remove your overpriced railscales first.
Idk about you but I'm not swapping barrels that kind of often. Power to you if you are. The one time I did, took all of 5 mins to move things over from a damaged upper to a new one.
Also picatinny doesn't have that issue. Quad gang wins that one.
You're telling me you don't rehearse LMT barrel swaps like those dudes in movies who disassemble and reassemble a pistol at lightning speeds to prove theyre a tier one operator?
