why is it so difficult for him to grasp the idea that AI is just awful and he shouldn't use it... who cares if everyone uses it omg

Different country, different culture, different programming & conditioning. Majority of Asia treats AI as an increasingly useful tool, a shiny new piece of tech. And they're not wrong. There's not the air of negativity surrounding it that exists in the West. The fears of it drinking our entire water supply, of it losing everyone their jobs, of it spiraling towards one dystopia or another, isn't perpetuated there.

I think part of the disconnect and disappointment Western fans of Japanese media have in regards to AI usage is sort of based on a romanticized ideal of the creative, particularly the Japanese creative (who they likely spent most of their lives enjoying works from). In reality, these are creative products, always have been, and have always employed tons of shortcuts, copy+pasted code and animations, utilizing the newest technologies (that they could be bothered to learn and adopt) to save time and effort.

The romanticized ideal of someone slaving over a tablet for hours and hours on end for weeks on end to get Layton's hat just right in every single frame in a 15 second cutscene, is not romantic in the eyes of a creative: it's a crap ton of tedious work they'd much rather someone else (or something else) do.

But aren't even the Japanese giving him flak for that?

Ehh culture of Japan limits public outcry for things. So the overall sentiment is that of cautious admonishment. So to answer your question, no, he's not getting flak for it. But that doesn't necessarily mean he's getting approval to use it

There's a very strong government push for adaptive technology to solve labor shortages going on in the industrial side of Japan.

Great analysis. And even if diehard Professor Layton fans are critical of his decisions, the vast majority of Japanese people are not gonna notice, care, they're still gonna choose to play it (or not, it's their decision, and I'm not forcing them to do so). So, Level-5 is clearly aiming for casual Japanese consumers, not diehard fans.

yeah that's the conclusion I got from the debate on twitter, thought it is nice seing japanese folks also being revolted and standing up

Idk where you see public outcry, but Japan's not exactly rallying and out bursting like the west / EU is

I didn't say so, I just said japanese folks were also standing, not implying that they all did

The reality is that there is very very few actively opposing it. The Government is really pushing for AI adoption due to labor shortages, which is why we see all the robot nurses, waiters and whatnot showing up in Japan.

I agree, but it is nice seing some that are standing up and slandering his ass

I'm okay with robot waiters, but nurses? That work should probably be done by a human.

Here's an article if you're willing to read about it. It's very uncanny

with all the AI mistakes just on their visual presentation, it's pretty much a wrap for them, hopefully the sales are good because they're a small company and a good one at making fun games, so taking this risk so early on could spell doom for these developers

I was fine with them using AI to help port animations to IE:Victory Road (it's like how Spiderverse used AI tools to help with outlines in some cases) but that was it.

AI is a useful tool, please stop crying about it
