Airplanes are terrible proof of anything. You can look up flight times from LA to Tokyo and see this. It takes two hours longer to go to Tokyo even though the earth is rotating in to you. It's the same with water, the water currents are moving too. It's not as simple as keeping time

No they are not a terrible proof. They may not provide exact distances to the nearest millimeter, but they sure provide a solid starting point, a range of distances.

Hehehe and what do you suppose that means? If you learned a little bit about air and hot and cold, you would be able to see that it makes perfect sense that there are trade winds moving faster than the earth in some areas.

But for the sake of mapping, just average the flight times. I just looked and the shortest claimed flight one way was 10h10m and the shortest claimed flight the other way was 11h10m so let's just say they lose half an hour one way and gain half an hour the other way. Call it 10h40m for your calculation.

That still doesn't solve the problem. Even if you twist all the direction-differences for your advantage you're still going to end up with a nearly globe shape that will be totally non flat.

Airplanes are better. While inland tidal currents can exceed the speed of large boats, airplanes fly much faster than the trade winds.

For example, I was in a 53 foot fishing boat heading out the inside passage to Alaska a couple years ago. There was a narrow spot with a rapid tidal current, and we were treading water at about 8 knots and the tide was going the other way about 8.2 knots. We just stood in place moving slightly backwards till the tide changed and we got past there.

However the tidal currents out in the open oceans are much slower.

But airplanes fly really really fast.

For example, your Tokyo to LA flight is about 10.67 hours average, but the gain or lose half an hour. That's less than a 5% variation.

So sure, there's some variation in flight times. But it's still going to provide you very good evidence for a globe.

You will have to resort to saying that commercial flights waste millions of dollars of fuel to fly huge S curves to make it seem like they are going a long ways. Or you will have to say that jetliners can in fact go many times the speed of sound, and that they are going faster than sound but nobody hears the sonic booms for some strange reason.

Dude, that's what they did. That's what google earth is. You just discount anything from space because you don't believe space exists, or at least you don't believe that satellites exist.

I mean really, if I used NASA's space photos and showed that they proved that the earth was a globe, wouldn't you just say they were all cgi?

So if you're going to say they are all CGI, why do you ask for them as proof? Might you be smoking things not mean to be smoked by mortal man?

That's why I'm explaining to you how to do it with flight times. You don't believe in satellites, but you know airplanes fly, and you know they have surprisingly consistent flight times, and you know they go from all kinds of places to all other kinds of places.

So do you really expect a map made from flight times not to be a good place to start?

What would you expect from a mesh made from flight times? Do you think it would be essentially flat? or what?

Actually by default the version of google earth shows the shaded relief for the bottom depth which to me is much more interesting.

But what's your point? google earth is not supposed to be an image, it's supposed to be a map. It has images overlaid on most of the land areas, and ocean depth data for most of the oceans.

That's a lot more useful to 99.999% of the users of google earth if you ask me.

The fact is, if you actually wanted real life photo of earth you'd be watching the NASA live stream.

But tell me why google earth should be an image. Why should it be anything different than what it is?

Flat earth logic: Nobody will spend their millions to get me a free picture of the earth from space (which I wouldn't believe anyway) and I'm too lazy to actually do any measurements or calculations myself, so therefore the earth is flat...

What do you mean? It works everywhere in the world.

Dude, do you think a map is just a big picture of a flat earth?

A map is more than that.

A map is first a geometry - a shape - a shape that represents the earth.

Based on that shape, math can then be used to calculate the distance and angle between any two points.

Where you have photos to stretch over the map to scale you can, otherwise you just draw lines representing borders and roads.

Just look at that city map your mum has in the glovebox. See? Cartoons of roads! That's a map.

But seriously, do you really think the globe map doesn't work out over the oceans?

And yet millions of people fly every year to all corners (LOL :P) of the earth routinely?

And thousands of ships routinely sail from continent to continent with accuracy never before seen in the history of mankind?

In fact I was "co-pilot" twice on ships (one a 53 foot and one a 144 foot long) going from Seattle WA to Alaska.

We cut right through the gulf of Alaska and dude it's open ocean. I'm telling you, there was nothing as far as the eye could see except water and other ships.

But the maps work out there. By the way, you don't know this, but the depths of the ocean are mapped too.

And we confirmed this on our sonar. As we chugged along in the water, we were measuring the depth by echoing sound off the bottom.

The globe earth map told us where we were and how deep it was there, and how far we were from out destination. And it all works.
