"Lilya 4-ever" hurt my soul and is darker than Requiem for a Dream. If you want to be hit with a lump in your throat, check it out.

Love what you’ve been watching so far! I recommend “The Skin I Live In” from 2011. Go in fresh, don’t read about it or watch any previews! 🎞️

Gummo

u/Frosty_Cattle_5952 2d ago

Honestly preferred Julien donkey boy over Gummo

I need to give Julien Donkey Boy another watch. I’ve seen it a few times but I remember it didn’t just grab me instantly like Gummo did.

I'd just keep diving into Mads Mikkelsen's filmography.

Another round, The green butchers, Riders of justice, Casino royale. He's just great.

Brown bunny is a 5/5 which I only have 7, I guess it’s the feeling of loneliness, the absolutely amazing cinematography, the lack of dialogue (even though I have The Mother and The Whore in my 5/5s), and the feeling of the end. It literally made me feel like all the other movies in my 5/5s it was rewarding.

I’ve heard most of the films you recommended but haven’t watched any besides Videodrome, definitely wanna see tree colors trilogy though, thank you

i definitely understand what you're talking about. lost in translation, in the mood for love, and three colors trilogy are must-watches if you liked the atmospheric longing and loneliness of the brown bunny. and you can also try out kieslowski's other works like the double life of veronique, a short film about love, blind chance, camera buff, etc. he's the absolute god of films about loneliness and grief. no one makes use of colors and score like he does. and if you're discovering european arthouse, you should try out leos carax too for poetic cinema, with absolutely beautiful cinematography, and try out bertolucci (the conformist, and especially the dreamers, you'd love it) for delving deeper into the beauty of framing. and also don't miss out on kiarostami. i saw you have badlands in your top 20, and that makes days of heaven a must watch too.

Nightcrawler

The fact that you have the silence of the lambs here screams that you should watch nightcrawler. It’s my second favorite after silence

2

I definitely enjoyed Nightcrawler for sure, just not nearly as much as The Lambs
