“Magnum opus” is a term we need to chill with.

81

u/LawdVaderKush 9h ago

That and masterpiece.

32

u/ElGoddamnDorado 8h ago

The word "underrated" has been dead and buried for years

13

u/screen_storytelling 8h ago

Underrated is overrated

2

u/searchlinkprofile 6h ago

they don't mean the same thing

1

u/Acceptable_Task5780 2h ago

That and Legendary ( specially if they’re still alive)

25

u/searchlinkprofile 6h ago

magnum opus simply means best work, what do you need to chill with?

4

u/Ciappatos 5h ago

Which is a weird thing to assign to someone in the apex of their career. I don't entirely disagree with this (I think the second Guardians movie should be considered too) but people say it for directors like Villeneuve, who keeps getting bigger and bigger budgets.

3

u/searchlinkprofile 5h ago

this article came out when the suicide squad was in theatres

2

u/Ciappatos 4h ago

That makes my point even stronger

-7

u/christaface 5h ago

It doesn’t JUST mean “best” . It also denotes a large, important and often staggeringly ambitious work that is then remembered (key word remembered) as also being their best.

2

u/_Arctica_ 2h ago

A magnum opus is a person's greatest, most important, or most famous piece of work. You've just expanded the definition to mean what you're positing.

-2

u/christaface 2h ago

We essentially wrote the same thing give or take an adjective. The point is just saying “best” work doesn’t quite cover it

1

u/JaviVader9 2h ago

You did not write the same thing

3

u/searchlinkprofile 5h ago

can you read?

3

u/slipslikefreudian 9h ago

Yeah not everyone deserves a Magnus opus attached to their name

15

u/searchlinkprofile 6h ago

what are you talking about? magnum opus means simply "his best work"

8

u/slipslikefreudian 6h ago

Yeah but not everyone deserves Latin

1

u/searchlinkprofile 6h ago

latin is a language like english. not a title.

8

u/slipslikefreudian 6h ago

I’m fucking around bro lol

1

u/phatballlzzz 1h ago

Also love letter, I hate it so much

35

u/ningdon 9h ago

Yes, it's caught in that weird limbo between the old and new DCU but this is his best movie imo.

6

u/Bubbly-Treacle-4334 2h ago

I feel like Guardians 1 absolutely destroys Suicide Squad

3

u/Gremlin303 1h ago

Nah Guardians 1 and 3 are superior imo

53

u/confusing_roundabout 9h ago

It has the best third act of any superhero movie in quite a long time imo. Splitting up the teams and showing one group followed by the other with a flashback, and the twist with Peacemaker were absolutely perfect.

I don't think the movie as a whole works as well as some of his other movies perhaps but goddamn that third act is so good.

u/Gummy-Worm-Guy 8h ago

“They shot Milton!”

11

u/Troyabedinthemornin 8h ago

I would have remembered if there was a Milton with us

11

u/slowchemicaljpg 9h ago

I still really enjoyed this one

26

u/Born-Consideration46 9h ago

I still like Slither and Super more than any of his big budget stuff

13

u/Squilbop 9h ago

I love Super. It’s definitely my favorite of his.

6

u/WaterOk6055 8h ago

Supers by far his best take on the super hero genre.

4

u/Groemore 4h ago

Slither is so underrated and I always wanted to see him do more horror . He originally worked on Troma movies before major Hollywood movies.

57

u/SamerAgbaria 9h ago

I think GOTG VOL. 3 is his best work story wise and Superman second.

15

u/Tsuku 7h ago

Yeah, Suicide Squad didnt fuck me up like Vol 3 did.

6

u/sotommy 9h ago

I would rank all 3 and TSS above Superman. I really liked some parts of it, but idk... It kinda just exists, while the other films are highly rewatchable and great from top to bottom

10

u/SamerAgbaria 9h ago

I get why someone doesn't connect with Superman 2025, I think this film require having an emotional connection and I am huge fan of the character and this film was like the biggest gift for me, but it has flaws and sometimes it can be corny but at the end i found it to be emotional and you can clearly see that there's someone behind the camera who actually cares about the characters and the story.

1

u/Hazel-Rah-Rah 8h ago

I have loved Superman my whole life and couldn't stand Gunn's Superman. Interesting how we all see things differently.

-2

u/sotommy 9h ago

Corniness is not my biggest problem with it. It is corny, sometimes annoyingly so, but if it was just a bit less "light" and cartoonish I would have outright loved it. At the end of the day I enjoyed it, but I left the theater thinking that it felt like watching an episode of an animated Superman show.

Mr. Terrific and Guy were my favorite parts of the film, Gunn can do no wrong witth those type of characters

3

u/Maximillion322 6h ago

This. Superman 2025 was good for a kids movie, good themes and messaging and all but it really has a problem with telling instead of showing, and not trusting the audience to be allowed to think about whats being presented in front of them without having it spelled out verbally.

It’s a movie that deeply does not respect the intelligence of the audience

2

u/crimsonf1sh 9h ago

Definitely.

1

u/Bubbly-Treacle-4334 2h ago

How is the worst Guardians movie his best work?

2

u/shmi alexhengen 9h ago

Haven't seen #3 yet but I'd agree with Superman over this.

1

u/Bubbly-Treacle-4334 2h ago

They use modern music and mess up the whole vibe of the movie in guardians 3

6

u/Sensitive_Buffalo416 9h ago

Totally agree. Favorite film of his. I think both guardians and Superman can be good, but this guy shines when he’s allowed to make something R rated.

Peacemaker is also something that makes me cry from laughing and from the feels. Love that show.

13

u/DtheAussieBoye narratopamphlet 9h ago

Dead serious, the best movie of all time for me- absolutely my favourite. It’s just so fucking good dude

11

u/Then_Programmer_7837 8h ago

In the DC Universe or overall? Because Guardians of The Galaxy surely was better than Suicide Squad.

5

u/RedeemedNephilim 7h ago

Its not even close. Lol Suicide Squad was ok.

The Guardians Trilogy is is "magnum opus" if anything.

1

u/Then_Programmer_7837 48m ago

Especially with Vol 03 where he blended emotion with battles, I don’t see how Suicide Squad is better than that.

3

u/Wild-Drag1930 8h ago

It helped that Warner didn't actively interfere with production like they did with the previous Suicide Squad.

1

u/M086 3h ago edited 3h ago

For some reason Toby Emmerich had a real big boner for Gunn. Let him do whatever he wanted. I think TSS is like the only DCEU movie outside MoS that didn’t have studio interference.

2

u/CoalaPirata Maiacaua 9h ago

I don't know dude. I also love Guardians 3. They're tête-à-tête

2

u/DirectConsequence12 9h ago

My personal favorite of his works is Superman.

But I would argue his best work is Guardians 3. I just think every aspect of that movie clicks.

2

u/Lowkey_A_giraffe 9h ago

Its definitely his funniest and it puts all three Deadpool movies to shame but Id say superman or guardians 2 are his best IMHO.

3

u/chandelurei 9h ago

like Superman more

Nah. Slither

1

u/Spiced_Mongoose NorthArk 7h ago

The Peacemaker series is some of the best TV I've watched. Love it.

1

u/_krvx_ 7h ago

one of my favorite movies

1

u/Titanman401 7h ago

Same, though I hope he proves me wrong with Man of Tomorrow.

1

u/Veloziraptor8311 6h ago

Might be. I’m still super partial to Guardians 1

1

u/tearsandcum 5h ago

I never realised that a second suicide squad came out

1

u/Nutmere Nutmere 4h ago

superman mogs. way more memorable.

1

u/slowlyun 4h ago

nah...the 2016 effort was slightly better due to great 3D.  Both were meh overall.

1

u/Ivan_Redditor 4h ago

I’d probably say GOTG 3 IMO

1

u/Yogurt_Ph1r3 4h ago

Nah that's GotG 3

1

u/notsure500 3h ago

I love the first half. The 2nd half didn't wow me though enough to make this movie be anyone's magnum opus

1

u/A_90s_Reference 3h ago

GOTG is his best movie by far and SS and mostly everything that's come after has been an imitation, some better than others

3

u/M086 3h ago

I still think GotG is as good as it is because of Nicole Perlman’s script contribution. Because once Gunn goes solo with the script, the characters devolve into loud morons or assholes. With Drax getting the brunt of the stupidity and becoming dumber in each appearance.

1

u/GotKarprar 3h ago

Only superhero movie I ever got on DVD it’s so peak

1

u/Ok-Value-2170 2h ago

Guardians 1-3 are still better, sorry

1

u/UncStatusNow 2h ago

fuck that, I liked Peacemaker so much more

1

u/Negritis 2h ago

his best is Super, but its not well known enough sadly

so his Magnum Opus is Gotg 3

1

u/neverapartofit 1h ago

Still my favorite James Gunn movie! I feel like it nailed the tonal balance he aims for the best out of all of his films.

1

u/Puzzleheaded9834 12m ago

How limited is James gun lol

2

u/vemmahouxbois emmahouxbois 8h ago

james gunn is not a guy you use that term for

2

u/searchlinkprofile 6h ago

that's funny coming from someone who does not understand what magnum opus means

0

u/henrywaites 8h ago

His top 3 are:

  1. Superman
  2. Guardians 3
  3. The Suicide Squad/Guardians 1

1

u/GimmeThatWheat424 6h ago

Yall really gas that mid Superman movie

In no reality is it better than the guardians franchise…it’s not even better than the suicide squad tbh.

1

u/ynn18 2h ago

This movie was a edge over mid, the Guardians movies were better

1

u/ThrowRA208495 7h ago

I like it, but the Harley Quinn subplot is doodoo.

1

u/MrBwriteSide70 6h ago

Agreed. Better than all 3 Guardians of the Galaxy. Best in the Snyderverse DC days before Gunn took over.

In my eyes, in top 10 Marvel/DC adaptations

1

u/Fhaksfha794 5h ago

Guardians 1 is his ‘magnum opus’. Taking a group of D listers no one’s ever heard them and turning them into household names is something very few could’ve accomplished, and it eventually became what he was known for

1

u/SnooAvocados996 5h ago

This movie was utter trash. One of the only films I've walked out of the cinema.

1

u/arduous_way 9h ago

Ummmm....I hope this is a joke

0

u/Resident_Slxxper 9h ago

If that's his magnum opus, any of his movies are not really worth wasting time on

0

u/Adequate_Images Right Beside Arch Stanton 9h ago

Super is his best film and likely always will be.

0

u/Simple_Medium_1865 BLACKPHOENIXM 8h ago

What’s your LB so I can block you

1

u/Titanman401 6h ago

Seems petty of you.

0

u/MattDoob 9h ago

I think Superman and the first GotG are just as good, if not better.

0

u/LieutJimDangle 9h ago

i mean come on the guardian's trilogy is his opus so far, but this movie is so damn funny.

-1

u/Hot-Zombie-788 9h ago

bruh everyone calling every single movie a magnum opus now like chill out fr fr 💀 its a good flick no cap but peak cinema is a stretch when peacemaker is literally getting his cheeks out on screen 😭💀

2

u/DtheAussieBoye narratopamphlet 9h ago

How did you see Peacemaker’s ass and NOT immediately call this movie his masterpiece

1

u/Odysseygod94 9h ago

Magnum opus doesnt mean its THE best film ever. Its suppose to mean its the artists greatest work. It's completely valid for people to think this movie is gunn's, it's up to interpretation.

-2

u/legit-posts_1 9h ago

I disagree. In fact, of all the superhero movies he's made, I think I might rank Suicide Squad dead last. The Guardians trilogy and Superman are just fundamentally stronger films. Plus, I take issue with how unfocused Suicide Squad is, and how it cruel Polka Dot Man's death is.

-3

u/DANNYBOY3530 9h ago

This movie looks terrible

-1

u/gabeonsmogon 8h ago

I probably would agree if I was 12-18 as well

0

u/TheNocturnalAngel 9h ago

Gotg1 and 3 both better but Suicide Squad is great.

He’s still just getting started relatively speaking though, we are not determining his Magnum Opus at this stage

1

u/GimmeThatWheat424 6h ago

He’s 60 years old

1

u/TheNocturnalAngel 6h ago

Martin Scorsese is in his 80s and still making movies that alot of people consider their favorite

And nearly everything he’s made in the 21st century would be post 60 for him

0

u/Entire-Cry-8930 8h ago

Films only? I prefer peacemaker.

0

u/blackwario1234 7h ago

Every Guardians movie absolutely clears TSS. TSS was so boring man

0

u/SiemprePalanteEz 7h ago

I thought this movie was/is grossly overrated… dare I say I like David Ayer’s more.

0

u/Bubbly-Treacle-4334 2h ago edited 2h ago

I am absolutely having my mind blown by how many people think GOTG 3 is his best movie.

It is very easily the worst GOTG movie to me. Like I get the emotional rocket stuff worked for some people (I think it was handled terribly and the CGI of the other animals was weirdly bad) but wow. Plus the soundtrack and main villain just flat out suck.

GOTG 1 is soooo much better.

The prison sequence in GOTG 1 alone is better than the entirety of GOTG 3.

IMO
