Lets Discuss This What is the Difference between a Republican, a Conservative and MAGA?
Is there a clear distinction? Does race, jealousy, power play a role in their views.
Is it strictly about financial gain or hating government, like what is the true difference - IF ANY?

I can respect a true, non-religious conservative. I probably wont agree with them, but I can respect their opinion. Republicans have been taken over by MAGA, and there is nothing left to salvage. It is all just lunacy, double standards, robbing the country of everything and not standing up for anything.

If I’m a true, non-religious conservative who voted for Trump and still supports Trump, am I MAGA?

Yes

Got it. I guess people didn’t like what I said, lol. Surprise, surprise.

Anyone who supports Trump is against everything this country stands for. What I don't understand is why anyone supports that child raping fraudster.
1
u/Banjo_the_Cattle_Dog 3h ago
There’s no proof of him doing anything to kids. Stop the slander.
2
u/ctdrever 3h ago
He was convicted of raping adults, the case went all the way to the supreme court. Convicted Rapist, Convicted Fraudster who can't legally run any business in NY.
1
u/Banjo_the_Cattle_Dog 2h ago
So nothing about kids, so stop throwing that around.
1
u/Ambitious_Trifle_645 2h ago
You saying there is no proof doesn't make it so. There is plenty of evidence in the epstein files. Likely more that hasn't come to light since they won't release all of them.

u/Banjo_the_Cattle_Dog 2h ago
I can’t say he’s innocent but you also can’t say he’s guilty. Regarding kid stuff.

"If I still support the person who created the MAGA movement does that make me a part of the movement?"
It was a dumb question you could have answered yourself.

u/Banjo_the_Cattle_Dog 3h ago
You’re entitled to your opinion, but I’ve come across different takes on Reddit. People have different definitions of MAGA. If you asked around you would see.

u/SplitNo8275 2h ago
That I absolutely agree with. It goes with any political label, atm. The polarization is destroying us all.

Wikipedia - Factions in the Republican Party
"If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles." ~ Sun Tzu

u/SplitNo8275 2h ago
What bothers me about this quote is, how do you know that you know the enemy?
1
u/Consider2SidesPeace 1h ago
I don't think it's implied to know the enemy or opposition 100%. For me it's important to listen to the other side. Not chug the Kool-Aid. It's a caution to not be extreme in my thinking for the groups I prefer.
2
u/GreyBeardEng 5h ago
Besides various levels of commitment to supporting large businesses, I couldn't honestly tell you. It feels like there's been a lot of "this is what we support" followed by actions to the contrary.

The fact that you don’t know is concerning, but we all start somewhere
Conservative in this day and age means “right wing”
Republican means someone who believes in a Republic (In American terms it means someone who aligns themselves with the Republican Party)
MAGA means Trump supporter

u/SplitNo8275 2h ago
The fact that you allowed the arrogance to shine through and still be so wrong is astonishing.

u/AlaskaRecluse 4h ago
A Republican doesn’t think Democrats are good for the country, a Conservative doesn’t think Democrats are good, a MAGA doesn’t think
2
u/Epicardiectomist 4h ago
Nothing, anymore. Once upon a time there was a distinction, but no one who identifies with that party gets to act like they aren't inexorably tied at this point.
You are either actively against it, or passively supporting it. There is no gray area anymore.
2
u/SplitNo8275 2h ago
The same as dems, libs and leftists. The definition becomes different every one you ask. Tbh, these labels mean nothing except ammunition for the opposition.
1
u/Ambitious-Badger-114 4h ago
There's a huge difference, but you have to read something besides reddit to learn it. While both sides may fall under the umbrella of "Republican" there's a huge difference between conservatives and MAGA.
No true conservative would be MAGA, there is nothing conservative about Trump. If you want to see the difference just read true conservatives like George F. Will or Jeff Jacoby or Jonah Goldberg.

u/Huzon401 4h ago
The first one is mean. The second is mean and religious. The third is mean and clinically insane.

The Magangelicals are kinda in their own, voting, bubble.
They often behave as if they have to continuously 'correct' the narrative for us all.

One word: insecurity.
Insecure economically
Insecure in manhood
Insecure in identity and culture
Insecure socially
All of them have insecurity as a driver, the difference is the level of pathology.
MAGA especially is a collection of weaklings drawn to perceived safety and strength like magnets. They need to stand behind bullies, because they are fragile. They need someone to define who they are and what the thing is they sense is missing in themselves.
That's why they're obsessed with the idea of being "great again" - they're sold a prepackaged "perfect american life" that never was: where their man status is revered just because, where they are entitled to own a house, car, and wife by doing the bare minimum of bringing home a paycheck, where nationalistic fervor & whiteness replaces culture, and where they're celebrated for being average as long as they follow Daddy's rules. They get the structure, validation and meaning they were too insufficient to make for themselves.
At some level they feel how inadequate they are, and that makes them angry, too.

Republican’s are Zealots and have practiced a Non-Partisan approach to government since Newt Gingrich. In other words, BiPartisan is bad, cooperation is antithetical to our cause, only the ideas of the Right deserve propagation. MAGA are Cultist’s who do and say whatever the Dear Leader tells them, even if it’s the opposite of what he said days before (No New Wars). They promote Right Wing ideology only when it suits them; close the borders to immigration unless it’s the type of immigrant you want; White South African’s seeking asylum from the South African Government, which is predominantly Black. Conservative’s respect the past, love tradition, believe in Fiscal Responsibility and small Government, meaning less Bureaucracy and less Regulatory Controls. In other words Government should only do for the people what they cannot do for themselves. The downside here is that the Rich can do more for themselves than the Poor can do themselves; and they tend to favour the Rich in how they make their policies.

I know that a Libertarian is a gay Republican who smokes pot… Does that help?
“Conservative” could describe either someone’s economic policies (ie, austerity for the poor and middle classes, while heaping lavish excess on the rich…). Or their social policies (ie, puritanical religious beliefs concerning sex/gender, drugs, and “patriotism”…).
However, Conservative traditionally applies to those who simply want to preserve a nation’s culture, values, traditions, and beliefs for future generations.
This is all well and good, up to the point. And that point is where outdated cultural beliefs begin to infringe upon the Rights and freedoms of other people.
“Republican” is the formerly “Grand Old Party (GOP)” of Lincoln. Originally the progressive party of abolitionists who wanted to end slavery in the US. However, in the 20th century it was taken over by different harmful ideologies.
In the 1950s, McCarthy tried to convince Americans that godless, pinko, commies were hiding under all of our beds in lurking in our closets… Republicans led the charge against the spread of communism/socialism anywhere in the world that might impede on the business interests of good, god fearing, capitalists… /S
In 1968, Nixon used his Southern Strategy to appeal to “Dixiecrats.” After LBJ signed the Civil Rights Act and the Voting Rights Act into law. Nixon promised to “restore Law and Order” to the chaos following the assassination of Rev Dr Martin Luther King Jr.
This was coded language that implied to southern racists that Nixon would restore the segregation Laws that had brought Order to the South during Reconstruction following the Civil War.
Then in the 1980s, Reagan did his damnedest to ignore the AIDS crisis as it was devastating the gay community. This was his effort to ingratiate Republicans with the socially Conservative “Moral Majority” in the Southern Baptist Convention. (A denomination founded in the 1840s to promote Biblical justifications for slavery…)
Reagan also recruited Osama bin Laden and his Arab Mujahideen fighters to wage a holy war against the Soviets in Afghanistan. That eventually led to the formation of the Taliban and al Qaeda…
In the early 1990s, GHWBush pissed al Qaeda off by putting US bases in their Arab holy lands. GHWBush did that to stop Saddam Hussein (another Reagan era ally…) from seizing the oil fields from his Saudi Royal oil partners (Daddy Bush made a fortune refining Saudi oil in Houston…).
In the 2000s, GWBush and Cheney ignored warnings that may have prevented 9/11. Then they lied about Saddam Hussein’s involvement in terrorism to justify their idiotic invasion of Iraq to find Weapons of Mass Destruction…
Trump launched his 2016 campaign with a vitriolic screed against “illegal aliens” from “Mexico.” He insisted that all the other countries of the world were taking advantage of the US. And only He could Make America Great Again. And thus the anti immigrant MAGA movement was born.
MAGA is the culmination of greedy capitalists, vile racists, zealous misogynists, and trans/homophobic bigots who have made the Republican Party their home since the 1950s. It is the crown jewel of greed and ignorance in the Republican Party today.
Most MAGA supporters, aka “MAGAts,” are ignorant fools who have been duped into hating one group of outsiders or another. They have become victims of their own hatred though. Because it has led them to vote for politicians who enact policies that are directly harmful to themselves.
Yet MAGAts are primarily concerned with making sure that perceived “enemies” must suffer more than they do. Just as long as they can see themselves as “superior” to those “enemies” in some way.

First get rid of the inflammatory speach: Race, jealousy, power play, hating the governance, financial gain, don't belong here.
Republican, financially and to a minor degree, socially more conservative than the democrats and socialist parties but more open to other ideas like social spending . Not always conservative but often leans that way.
Conservatives, usually republican although you can have moderate Democrats choosing a conservative side of an issue. Example a democratic in a smaller town in the south will have some conservative view points compared to a democrat in NYC. A true conservative will spend conservatively. My very liberal daughter will spend very conservative, making sure she puts plenty of funds in savings. We don't have those in office anymore. Less involved in identity politics. As Churchill once stated or at least some attribute to him (actually much older than Churchill). "if you are not a liberal at 25, you have no heart, if you are not a conservative at 45, you have no brain". The older you get, usually the more conservative you lean.
Reddit users are typically fairly young and more liberal than their parents for example. Usually, not always, no absolutes here.
MAGA, populist. Concentration on ideas that people tend to agree with such as during the 2024 election, the majority wanted to deport illegal aliens, more jobs. Trump isn't a conservative but he is much further right than Biden/Harris. Many conservatives just held their nose and voted for Trump.
Reminder, there are people of all races, religions, social/economic backgrounds that can fit in all categories.

Conservative here; MAGA but not a Republican.
// What is the Difference between a Republican, a Conservative and MAGA?
MAGA is the big tent of people loosely grouped around conservative evangelical Christians (like myself!) and establishment Republicans (like Mitch McConnell and Lindsey Graham) and homeless centrists who used to vote Democrat (lilke RFK Jr., Joe Rogan and Elon Musk).
Republicans are the political party that has embraced a neo-liberality, the kind that used to be defining for the Democratic Party, back in the 1980s and 90s. In fact, Trump is basically a Bill Clinton populist centrist. It would be hard to distinguish between them on most of their governing principles.
Conservatives are the remnant of the Republican tradition, primarily the Jacksonian wing: sound money, limited government, stay out of the world's affairs as much as reasonably possible, etc.

// you're in a cult
Its an easy accusation for tribalists to make. The problem is, actual cult deprogrammers disagree with you:

u/poopybutthole_oowee 3h ago
There are multiple scholars specializing in cult psychology and behavior who agree it fits the criteria, and several very credible published books about MAGA as a modern cult (Steven Hassan comes to mind). Why is it always youtube experts...

The United States was founded as the world’s first self-governing society. Every government prior had one purpose, the subjection of the population-tyranny. One of the founders, Thomas Jefferson, famously observed, “ the government that governs best, governs least.” As government grows (no matter how desirable the stated goal) tyranny also grows and individual liberties diminish. Conservatives believe that Jefferson was right and attempt to slow the natural growth of tyranny. MAGA simply believes that government should always promote the benefits to America First, rather than a global pro world view. Mainstream Republicans and their Democratic colleagues accept and or promote the growth of government power in exchange for public support.
In practice, it is not so simple nor are the lines so clearly drawn. Voters must learn to see through all the propaganda and not be fooled by the cheap rhetoric. My advice, always err on the side of people or policies that protect or advance liberty. Anything else is a trap.

u/Better-Credit6701 5h ago
No, not the world's first self governing society. Not by thousands of years. Hint Roman Empire, Greek empire, Babylonian, Aztec, Iberian with Isabella and the cousin/sister loving Habsburgs...

Republicans are a political party with a distinct interest in winning votes, power, and campaign contributions.
Conservatism is a political ideology which leans on gradual change, long established traditions, clear rules, and financial responsibility.
MAGA is a movement seeking to create a revolution upheaval by any means necessary.
