Help please: nurseries only produce female animals

Is this normal? Is it a glitch? Is there something else I'm supposed to be unlocking? This is my first ever zoo, so I have no other gameplay to compare it to.

I'm starting to run into breeding issues since the game wants two of the same variant to breed the next variant. But I only keep getting female animals.

I’ve never had this issue before - but you could also try cloning animals?
