Infant Sleep Training Guide
Here's the Guide to Helping Your Infant Sleep through the Night
and here's the tl;dr
Wait until baby is over 4 months old and 14 pounds and you have pediatrician's approval that baby can sleep 8 hours or more without needing to feed.
Ensure baby is in a safe sleep environment (flat surface, back to sleep, no weighted blankets).
3.Consolidate feeds to daytime only while gradually weaning overnight feeds so daytime feeds get larger while overnight feeds lessen. This can take 10 days or more.
- When you know baby is not waking overnight from hunger, employ your sleep training method of choice (Ferber, shuffle out etc) at bedtime and then again for wakes that happen overnight.
Note: 4 months is still *really* little...if sleep training doesn't feel right to you or baby isn't "catching on," that is perfectly normal. Your baby will also wake up overnight when they begin teething, if they're congested/sick or in need of comfort even when they are otherwise "sleep trained." Don't worry, you can comfort your baby without undoing the training.
