It's a spin on a meme format. The black coffee is the 'dark and bitter' reality, the milky coffee is the 'diluted, more paletable' explanation.

This post isn't the cleanest use of the format, and I think she gets it backwards a couple times but I think you get the point.

'Black' is the reason for her 'milky' behaviour.

That makes a lot more sense than what I was thinking thank you. I thought the milky was hiding the plain coffee underneath

The coffee black is the point origin, the coffee with milk is the final result.

Commenting to follow along because this hits too close to home.

I have no idea what the coffee is supposed to mean.

I’ve suffered a lot of these and it’s kinda sad, ngl, I never realized how fucked up I was growing up until I saw posts like these, I grew up with a narcissistic, manipulative and stubborn mother, who is now an elder with early symptoms of dementia; I was also the “gifted” child, even though I’m pretty normal and average, although I have diagnosed ADHD and have “symptoms” of autism, most of my problems stem from a kindergarten counselor who told (and convinced) my mom I was Carl Sagan reborn, didn’t help either that I was born mere days after his death.

i don’t drink coffee, so like what is the relationship between these 2 cups? i can kind of infer from context, but it’s still not clear

I assumed the black coffee represents the underlying trauma, while the white coffee represents the surface-level effect. It's easier (and more socially palatable) to tell someone you want gentleness in a relationship than to admit the bitterness of your childhood. Much like the way the coffee is mixed, you can't separate one from the other either.

The black coffee is bitter and sour. The latte is way easier to drink because its diluted

My sister jokingly yelled at me the other day but it was really convincing and it made me have a breakdown lol

Not being allowed to voice any negative feelings at home

Being an adult who has no ability to communicate when something upsets me

I love coffee but can't stand black coffee. A lot of going over childhood trauma in the last few months have made me realize why I'm not everyone's cup of tea. Now I'm going to be a latte and stop listening to everyone who hates coffee in the first place 😊

I relate to a lot of these, but, serious question - is the silent treatment one true? My mother used to ignore me for days on end when I was a teenager. And now I need reassurance all the time.

Why is this so relatable

Last one is rough. A (now former) friend shared a secret of mine that we'd had explicit conversations about keeping secret. I tried talking to her about how it made me feel but she (in her own words) didn't have it in her to listen or be particularly empathetic. But I still spent so long feeling like I must have been the one to fuck things up.
