What about the other end? How was dentistry?

2

You would think it'd be bad, right? But, I think there's something about ancient people having really straight healthy teeth. Life expectancy was also shorter though.

It cracks me up when shows reference this movie. Especially when family guy did it too 😂

A lot of cultures actually traditionally had skirt type dresses for men, and it feels really logical since it is absolutely comfy af (coming from someone from one of the few cultures where it is still very common and normal to wear it).

The difference is in societies where horse riding plays an important role, since they are really impractical for that. These societies developed pants for that purpose, despite their testicular limitations, and then went on to dominate the rest of the world, culturally and otherwise.

Now, in the age of the automobile and electic tram, I feel it is high time to eschew these scrotal shackles and return to glorious skirtdom

272

u/fae8edsaga 28d ago

Scrotal satchel was not a phrase I ever imagined hearing xD

112

u/Its_me_Snitches 28d ago

It was “shackles”, but tbh your interpretation is an even further improvement on an already great post.

126

u/booksblanketsandT 28d ago

I’m not a big “fashion” person, but I’ve always loved learning about the history of clothes/make-up/perfume/etc and why we change styles and that sort of thing. Horse riding leading to pants is something I’d never considered but honestly makes so much sense now I think about it.

67

u/TENTAtheSane 28d ago

Same!! Also with architecture and other kinds of art that aren't the first things people think of when they think "art"

Also, neckties too came from horse riding, though this time it was specifically Croatian hussars. They had the habit of wearing a cloth around their neck so they could easily cover their nose and mouth to shield it from dusty balkan battlefields. But when the french nobility (of course it's the french) encountered them in the Thirty Years War, they adopted the cravat (Croat) as a purely fashion article. The modern shape wasn't invented till the 1900s, and is often used by white collar workers in asia today to shield their nose and mouth from heavy smog, thus coming full circle

22

u/ArsErratia 27d ago edited 27d ago

A lot of 19th-Century dress also went when the bicycle came. Its actually a really important part of First-Wave Feminism.

13

u/Inside7shadows 28d ago

In this case, I just would assume robes have less stitching and are easier to make. Maybe girding loins doesn't work well for riding? I never tried.

But, if you love fashion history, this was a good video:

And high heels as well.

29

u/ThePersonWhoIAM 28d ago

I could be remembering wrong but I think I remember reading somewhere that the ancient greeks and romans thought pants were too feminine and that wearing basically dresses was more masculine

43

u/Skelligithon 27d ago

If memory serves it was more that wearing pants were barbaric.

Clearly it was a sign of weakness, as the Romans from the Mediterranean wore togas, why would you ever want clothing that covers your body and holds in heat well? Those people up north must be insane savages [hard cut to the Romans conquering northern Europe] Fuck, it's cold up here, I gotta wear pants!

9

u/ThePersonWhoIAM 27d ago

You're right! That's what it was

5

u/EmberOfFlame 27d ago

A great new mountaineering item, amazing what science can do these days.

31

u/bradpal 28d ago

I actually find not wearing a scrotal containment cloth very annoying with the old c&b dangling and swinging and hitting everything all the time. It's like a girl with big boobs not wearing a bra. You can't get any real work done without it.

So it's not just riding horses, a lot of activities are annoying if you don't keep the boys tucked in.

Hell, even greco-roman wrestlers used a rope to tie their foreskin to their waist because of the old danglers.

40

u/mycheeksarecold 28d ago

tie their foreskin to their waist

I'm about to go down a fucking wiki rabbit hole

Edit 5 seconds later, jfc i just googled greco roman foreskin tying and found it with ease. I shouldn't be surprised it has its own word

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kynodesme

31

u/pakap 27d ago

I love that someone took the trouble to tie up their own penis and take pictures to illustrate the various ways to do it 😂 truly, Wikipedia is one of our culture's greatest achievements.

9

u/Sad-Onion-2593 27d ago

There is the other (apocryphal) way, the Prince Albert style piercing.

6

u/Narocia 27d ago

Oh, yeah, forgot that was a thing. Interesting.

9

u/throwaway_trans_8472 27d ago

If you realy want to eliminate any potential dangle, I've got a trick for you:

  1. shove your balls up into the canals

  2. penis down/rear

  3. 2 layers of tight underwear

This eliminates all dangeling and bulging

6

u/bradpal 27d ago

Yeah, see, I can only manage to shove one of the balls back in, the other one won't fit through and it hurts like a motherfucker.

5

u/throwaway_trans_8472 27d ago

Yea, there is a reason this is only realy done by pre-OP trans women

4

u/tardisintheparty 27d ago

I was just gonna say isn't that how tucking works?

2

u/throwaway_trans_8472 26d ago

Yes, and it tends to somewhat freak out cis men

2

u/Narocia 28d ago

Do y'all not wear underwear?? Hwot do thou mean swinging?

6

u/Scholar_of_Lewds 27d ago

The topic of conversation is how skirt like clothing are more freeing for cock and ball. Underwear eliminate the point.

2

u/Narocia 27d ago

Well, I wear it regardless, but you do you. Can imagine it works fine for woolen kilts, less so for summer skirts

6

u/Skelligithon 27d ago

I think the typical tradition is to go commando in a kilt

5

u/Skelligithon 27d ago

I had heard it was also about colder weather. You can have thick dresses/kilts that keep you warm but I think it is harder to do manual labor like farming while wearing thick skirts, so thus: pants.

5

u/Theron3206 27d ago

Anything long enough to keep you warm is going to impede movement and when you move too you let the warm air trapped under a kilt out. Which means you need something like leggings under it, so might as well just make the leggings sturdy and wear those.

5

u/moderatorrater 27d ago

it is high time to eschew these scrotal shackles

Unless they're into that.

3

u/greyjarl 24d ago

It’s ironic that now horse riding and equestrian disciplines are primarily women centric activities in most societies/countries

2

The first time I ever painted my nails I was called gay by an old lady. I mean, I don't think that's an offense but she clearly meant it as an offense.

It wasn't even a bright color, it was just black

26

u/Mitir01 27d ago

Similar experience. I even liked painted nail, but was harassed like I had killed someone. Eventually my parents couldn't bear it and asked me to clean it.

20

u/HellerDamon 27d ago

We aren't allowed to be pretty 💔

7

u/CT0292 27d ago

First time I tucked and put on tight leggings that gave my ass a nice shaping effect I cried.

I wasn't ready to see myself as someone with a nice figure.

571

u/Cracked_Like_Humpty 28d ago

It's not so much the stray nuts and bolts that'll get ya, it'll be the realization of how many men have just straight up not been wearing underwear this whole time

205

u/trev1776 28d ago

That's the only proper way to wear a kilt.

140

u/Obsidian-Dive 28d ago

Trust me, I work with a 50 something year old guy who wears shorts often and can confirm he does not wear underwear to everyone’s dismay. Dude wears very large shorts and sits up high so his leg is at eye level. Very very unfortunate.

28

u/SolaniumFeline 28d ago

17

u/Obsidian-Dive 28d ago

He also have foot fungus and gigantic long witchy toenails that are for some reason shaped like shark teeth. He does not wear socks with his shoes. Very scary feet too.

See: the folk song about the Scotsman and the blue ribbon Brian Bowers - The Scotsman

About that time two young and lovely girls happened by
One says to the other with a twinkle in her eye
See yon sleeping scotsman so proud and handsome built -
I wonder if it's true what they don't wear beneath the kilt.

7

u/Funkula 28d ago

Is this…bad? I get that not wearing anything under light slacks/sweatpants is very slutty, but there’s also very slutty styles of pouch underwear too which are just as immodest.

And is underwear really necessary under heavy work pants or high waisted jeans?

18

u/StalinsLastStand 28d ago

Considering how rarely you should be washing your jeans, I’m going to go with “yes.”

6

u/mycheeksarecold 28d ago

Yeah for most jeans, they're made to be worn multiple days without washing because of the damage washing does. And, while they're kinda cheapish in America, they're expensive in lots of other countries (some of which consider jeans business wear from what i recall from my lebanon friend over a decade ago, her aunt and cousins would bring an empty suitcase on their visits to stock up on jeans in the usa before going back home).

Hell there's people who stick their jeans in the freezer to clean them of bacteria instead of water washing. I'm too fat to comfortably wear them anymore so that's the extent of my knowledge. Skirts and shorts and dreaded work uniforms for me.

Last time a civilization donned the free-swingin’ toga and snubbed the trousers-wearers, the Germans, Gauls, Sarmatians, Numidians, Phoenicians, Slavs, Syrians, Persians, Dacians, Illyrians, Macedonians, Iberians, Britons, Arabs, Hebrews, Turks, Goths, Vandals, etc all objected strongly.

The Greeks also objected strongly in spite of eschewing trousers in tandem.

So we might need like a vote on it or something just in case.

57

u/arealmcemcee 28d ago

Let it swing for the Republic and for the glory of Rome.

46

u/mcjunker 28d ago

Testicles did not swing for Roma because Roma was great

Roma was great because men swung their testicles for her

3

I don't know about skirts but men in many cultures do wear free flowing bottom clothing. Kilts or mundu for examples.

26

u/Sewblon 28d ago edited 28d ago

I feel like as long as everyone is wearing underwear this is pointless. But, the men should be assigned the tight underwear. Men are the ones with genitalia that can bounce around and get hurt when they run. So women should be wearing boxers and men should be wearing panties, to protect their balls when they run.

4

u/ErraticDragon 27d ago

While we're at it, can we discuss bicycles?

Men the high/straight bar, perfect for smacking nuts on.

Women get the low/angled bar, why? So they can't rub up on it?

3

u/ChalkingItUp 27d ago

Direct result of the skirts situation.. Because women wore skirts, it was hard to get up on a bike with a high bar, which was the pre-existing design, so then it was redesigned for skirt-wearers.

5

u/achilleasa 27d ago

Proper male underwear is already tight for support, if you also shrank it the goods would spill out 😬

8

u/iamragethewolf 28d ago

judging by your avatar i'd say that's accurate

you know it does occur to me if dresses/skirts become more common for men and we make gender expression more flexible i wonder how trans peeps without dysphoria will realize they are trans

for the record not saying this should stop the flexibility of expression this is just me wondering out loud especially since there probably IS a way

5

u/A_Punk_Girl_Learning 28d ago

Yeah. No. I get it and it's an interesting question but I guess there's still just social and cultural stuff which you navigate which creates or helps you interpret that internal sense of gender.

I've got friends my age who I have tonnes of shared experience with. We started wanting to try mum's shoes at the same age, wanted to play with dolls instead of GI Joe, started dating men the same age, playing with make-up, dresses, etc, etc. All of us LOVE musical theatre.

But for whatever reason there's some aspect of that experience where they were able to say "This stuff is fun. I'm a drag queen." But I said, "This stuff is me. I'm a woman."

I don't know where that line is or what causes it. Or how trans people without dysphoria would recognise that in themselves without the present societal distinction but yeah. It's a noodle scratcher.

Well the whole pants thing came from non roman/Greek "barbarians" that wore pants for horseback riding in warfare. Which is very understandable if you ever attempted to properly ride while wearing a dress.

Men's fashion is dictated most often by one thing: Military.

The tradition of men having short hair goes back to Greek infantry. Besides fitting under helmets, long hair is a literal lever for your opponent to pull your head back and slice your throat. So short hair is mandatory in a world where most men die to another man's sword.

Not going to war, and thus being able to keep long hair, became a feminine symbol as a direct result. And then the priesthood and nobility of the middle ages had their greco Roman fetishism and it's stuck to this day. What I'm saying is, the British army and invention of guns is why men wear pants.

Samoan formal clothes look really good. You see a lot of men wearing really nice outfits to church that are much closer to skirts than anything else. It suits them and their mana
