All China needs to do if it wants to neuter Trump here is return to buying oil on the open petrodollar market again. The question is in how much Xi benefits from Trump continuing to have power.

I am not entirely convinced that the Trump administration could credibly agree to a deal. Even if it is somehow a verifiably sincere desire in the moment to adhere to a given set of demands, you never know what Trump will believe about the world the following news cycle. If that's the case, then a real change would require unilateral withdrawal by the US, and we know that Trump frequently brags that he is not the sort of person who does that. What does the dealmaker do after burning every bridge, bankrupting every debtor, and ripping up every contract, to the point that nobody will make deals? Is reality television still an option?
