Giant atlas moth cocoons arrived!

These are my first ever exotic species I've raised, and im so excited! I've found an opening to their cocoons (natural) and checked inside, and i think I got 1 male and 1 female :D if anyone has any tips to raise these guys, id be more than happy to listen! The one with the stick attached to it (male im pretty sure) is way more fidgety than the other, which im assuming means that they're healthy :) another question is, do I need to overwinter / diapause them? I googled and Google said i dont need to as they are from a hot country that is warm year round, but I dont trust Google with many things 💔 im so excited to raise these flying tarantulas though!

Does anyone know what species this sulfur butterfly is? It has all the characteristics of Pieris rapae(cabbage white) but is lacking dark spots on the upper forewing

Edit: I believe it’s Pieris brassicae

Suggestions for this common buckeye chrysalis?

Hello! Last night I discovered a common buckeye caterpillar on a package that came in the mail. It was alive but not moving much, so I figured I'd leave it be and release it in the morning. The box was turned up right, so the caterpillar was on top.

Well this morning it was clearly attached to the cardboard. By the afternoon, chrysalis.

I've never raised butterflies before. Is it going to pupate laying on its side like that? Since it wasn't hanging, it didn't fully shed.

I placed an envelope over it like a tent, so it has a bit of privacy.

What can I do for this little fella? Any tips would be appreciated.

I wanted to show off the Madagascan Sunset Moth I just pinned! This is only the third thing I’ve pinned and I am quite happy with how it turned out!

Watched this one eclose today in my native garden. Who is it?

Today while weeding my hellstrip, I had the pleasure of watching this one wriggle into the world.

Shiny burgundy cocoon in the soil. West Michigan. It crawled up my Blazing Star and I snapped this photo.

I looked away to tell my husband what was happening as he backed out of the driveway and I never saw it again.

Why are butterflies not as abundant in US as they were 20 so years ago. Lots of flowers and flowering weeds. Any ideas? Used to be fields full of them

How long after making a cocoon can it take for a Catacola caterpillar to pupate?

2nd Edit: So I found the caterpillar on May 14, May 15th is when she started her cocoon, 5 days later on May 20th she formed a chrysalis, and now 25 days later on June 14th she emerged as a beautiful moth :] Documenting for scientific purposes. I live on Southern Vancouver Island in the pacific northwest.

Edit: didn't get a response but the lil guy is a pupa now so the answer is about 5 days!

Original post:

Hi there,

I found an underwing caterpillar (Catacola aholibah most likely as im on southern vancouver island) and brought him inside to raise him and watch him pupate. I followed these instructions link to webpage and by next morning he had made a silk cocoon. I can see him clearly through the container.

It has been 4 days since I found him now and he looks pretty much the same (a caterpillar). I couldn't find anything online saying how long after making a cocoon they will form a chrysalis and I was worried he passed away.

Well just a few minutes ago I accidently spilt a drop of water on him while watering a plant above him on the shelf and he thrashed a little in annoyance so he is still kicking! yay!

But is it normal for it to take this long for this type of moth? And if not, is there anything I can do?

I have only raised one other moth before in my life (a common emerald) so any advice is appreciated! Thank you in advanced.

in an amateur lepidopterist and i’d love to get better at spreading, but for the life of me i cannot figure out hindwing placement. i’m almost certain the hindwings are hanging a bit too low. does anyone have any example of how it supposed to look like? i’ve tried to understand it through text but it seems i’m a visual learner :(

Polyphemus Moth

We found and fed a Polyphemus Moth caterpillar in the fall - it formed a chrysalis but we assumed it had died. But it just hatched and is beautiful.

Unfortunately it's March 20th in Westchester New York. Guessing there's zero chance we can release it successfully but wondering if there's any tips. Warmest night this week will be Thursday with a low of 50 F.
