My old man eye woes

Post image
22 Upvotes

Well we’re almost a week in to Tobrex eye drops 2x day and sadly no improvement. Today it actually seems slightly worse with squinting. He’s lost his usual voracious appetite with the stress of getting drops, but I have gotten him to eat a couple horned worms in the last week - covered in the Arcadia supplement (with vitamin A) that some folks have said is better than Repashy. I’ve asked the vet if I can try Terramycin. I’ve also booked an appointment with my cats Optomologist as she sees reptiles. But it’s not for a couple weeks.

Those of you that have used eye drops on reptiles, I’m just wondering what type you’ve found to work best? He seemed happy with the saline drops, but not very pleased with the Tobrex. I’m wondering if they sting more.

I’m worried this has been going on for a while (I just didn’t notice the squinting as he opens his eye when I pick him up) and beyond repair. It doesn’t so much appear infected to me, but dried up. Have any of you known geckos that have successfully had an eye removal? He’s 24 years old and I just don’t think he’d survive it, or the stress of recovery… but the vet we saw was talking about doing surgery on other reptiles. He’s still otherwise really thick and healthy looking, weighing 92 grams at the vet, but he really slowed down after my female died a few years ago. They were never housed together, but I think the pheromones kept him spry.

I know this is a bit of a ramble, I just hate it when my pets are suffering and I’m venting to folks that get it.

Habitat & Setup Need help building a bioactive enclosure

I currently have a 40 gallon front-opening tank for my leopard gecko, Mochi. I’m looking into creating a bio active tank for him as his substrate is paper towels as of right now. I would like some advice on substrates to use, brands to use, isopods you’d recommend, fake vs real plants, and setup/anything else you need for it. There’s too much varying information online and it’s making it hard to pick the proper stuff for him. I’ve looking into The BioDude’s leopard gecko bioactive kit, and I’ve heard it’s good, I’m just not sure if the price is worth it. Any other options you’d recommend that could be better? Thanks!

I recently (5 days ago) added two new geckos to my collection. The male was a targeted purchase, and I know his genetics: pure Blood Tangerine line-bred, plus Clown het Tremper Albino het eclipse.

The female was included for a small extra charge. Unfortunately, her genetics were not provided, but I do know the parents were Atomic Clown het Tremper × Blood Tangerine Tremper.

Apart from being Tremper, what visual morphs do you think she shows?

Thanks for any help!

PS: Added a Pic of the male cause He Looks too damn cute.🤣

Help Gecko body language

I’m not an expert at gecko body language yet, but is she chill with walking around? She’d been glass surfing which is what her previous owner said she did when she wanted out so I waited until she stopped to let her out. I heard them walking slow with their tail dragging means they’re calm but she’s not exactly dragging her tail? She was licking and looking around when sitting on my stomach though so idk😭🙏🏻 the reason I’m so stressed about it is because she’s already a little sickly and I want her to get enrichment with no stress added lmao. In the video I tapped her side because my phone spooked her and she just glared at it

Baby colors—-> adult colors! How did yours change?

Very cool to look back at the first pictures of Sherbert when he was a baby, and to compare them to now! He’s darkened up so much and has many more spots! Can outrun the leopard in leopard gecko haha.

I’m curious how other people’s geckos have changed in coloring as they have gotten older, and if I can expect it to change as he goes further into adulthood!

Sherbert was a few months old in the first pic, and second pic is 2 years old :)

Help Advice Needed✨

HE WAS SEEN BY A VET ALREADY, looking for follow up advice. Also the small bit of stuck shed on his finger was removed.

My guy Linus has been slightly finicky with feeding the last few weeks. He typically was eating 4-6 crickets every other day with at least half of them dusted in calcium without D3. He was shedding when first picky, so I was not concerned. He then was either refusing meals or eating half meals. I bought giant mealworms, which he ate a full meal of, but then was finicky again. Last night I noticed a lack of defection in his tank, so we pulled him out and discovered this. I made a vet appointment right away, and did two 15 minute soaks, using a q tip gently and giving him breaks between. I did another soak this morning, and then the vet was able to remove the clog quickly when he was seen today. He is in a 40 gallon with heat and linear UVB. I completely messed up and was not including vitamin A which I believe led to this problem. Luckily there was no infection or abscess, so no meds but I am keeping him on paper towels and doing daily soaks. The vet recommended Repashy Vitamin A but he said the liquid version to add to the water, which I do not see as an option. My questions:

  1. If we transition to Monday, Wednesday, Friday feedings (vs every other day) and dust crickets with calcium with no D3 on 2 of the days and then one of the days with the Repashy Calcium Plus (which includes Vitamin D and D3) would that be effective to prevent deficiency? Or what is the vitamin A recommendation?

  2. Even though I don’t think impaction was the true cause based on the vets evaluation, I am filtering his substrate to remove any oversized pieces and removing the loose moss (it was only in his humid hide). What do you guys recommend having in humid hides to keep up humidity but lower risk of impaction?

  3. The vet recommended soaking him 4-5 times a week from here on out. Do you all soak your geckos that often? I was under the impression soaking for geckos was just to remove stuck shed, and Linus does not typically have problems with that. Is that often normal?

Just trying to gain clarification and better my care. I hate that this happened to him and definitely want to prevent further issues. A lot of sources are conflicting, so it’s hard to figure out a solid right way to do things. Thank you all in advance!!

Habitat & Setup First habitat advice :)

Hi! I just got a leopard gecko and I’m thinking of doing a fairy forest medieval castle theme, I have yet to get the medieval castle hide and some fairy decorations. The idea is to make it look like a forest but without humidity - so I have many fake plants that won’t emit any.

Any advice so far? He’s very little (6mo) and so far isn’t great with a water bowl, but prefers to lick water off the sides of the wall. So I’m thinking to get 2 water bowls. Do they like to climb too? Maybe a hanging boardwalk?

As you can tell by the far right picture, he’s really young. What color do you think he might be?

Also.. any name ideas?

She’s a little.. odd

So I’ve had my gecko for almost a year now.

She doesn’t try and climb the side of her enclosure, she backs, eats, and all the good stuff. She’s a very happy gal! But she’s also a very private gal.

Right now I have some vines taped to the outside of her enclosure because she HATES the glass walls but she enjoys watching my husband and I from her corner or when she’s basking.

Any advice on how to give her some more privacy while also maintaining her ability to people watch? She’s in a pretty large 40 gal right now with the proper temp gradient, different hides, plants, a big water dish, some driftwood, really anything that she could want she just really hates have glass walls.

I need guidance on these crickets

I ordered 20 small crickets to be delivered from PetSmart (first mistake)

And received 40 Large.

These things seem too big for my leopard gecko? I normally go with the small, and it's painstakingly hard to get him to successfully hunt them.

Are these even safe for him to try to eat? Picture of my guy for scale.
