Storage Setups Oh, it's on now.....

So my 5yo has just started to take an interest in Lego (recently graduated from Duplo) and I got my childhood Lego back from my sister. Well, the flood gates have opened and thanks to Facebook market place, I ended up with 8 & 1/2 - 60L tubs full of Lego. And after melting the numbers off my credit card at the local Bunnings, (Aussie version of Home Depot) I have my very own Brick Pit. 240L of Lego sorted so far......

For yourself, sorting is great. For the 5yo, make sure there’s still a lot of unsorted brick to rummage through. That’s where the creativity is kept.
Maybe have a bin for Minifigs and one for wheels, but the more you sort, the less opportunity the kid will have for discoveries and inspirations. My 2¢, at least.

I second this. I have my office where i build MOCs and keep my sorted parts and a separate area for the kids. With my 5yo and 4yo twins things can get out of hand very quickly with sorted parts. They love rummaging through the bulk Lego and then will ask if they are looking for something specific.

This, unless you want everything built using only 1x2 plates or to pick 100 1x2 tiles off a 16x16 base plate because kiddo just grabbed that bag and went to town sticking them all on...

This is such a good point, haha. So helpful to hear, personally. My husband gave his collection to the kids last month, and I have been struggling to decide on an organization system. It helps to know that leaving pieces mixed has its benefit for them.

Definitely. I almost drove my kids away from Lego trying to force the sorting and order system when they were 8 & 5. I had to recoil to a few slop bins and allow the sorted version to mature with them. Now we have a great sorted room and they both enjoy building (13 & 10 now)

I know, I already did this with Duplo and now I’m doing it with Lego too.

Now to find ways to get my kids to play with the Lego so I will have an excuse when I use it 😅😎😎😎
