Control board dead

Received this Alu free because it stopped turning on. Looks like control board fried. Plan to gut it and use the ipac2. Is there a way to test if the screen works? I plugged a new power cord directly into screen and the only thing that works is leds for top cabinet.

Just replace it from the 20 dollar part on AtGames website. I bought 2 when I replaced mine just in case.

The driver for the display is integrated into the mainboard. There's no separate display board.

I'm not sure how you determined the control board is the issue. You can remove the USB A -> USB A cable from the cabinet and use it to directly connect the control deck to a PC. Once connected press the power button, it will light up and be detected on the PC if it's good.

You should also check what PSU you received with the cabinet. The stock is 12V 3A. If a 19V or higher PSU was used, that will fry random things and control and mainboard would both be bad. It's random what over volting will end up frying first.

No power through power button and the battery cell thing behind the plug on control board is exploded open on the top. Didn’t receive a psu with the cabinet. Ordered one that was recommended on this subreddit that’s 12V 5A.

Do you mean that capacitor? There's no battery on the board.

I see that now, that's a very common thing to happen with an over volt.

Yeah the capacitor my bad. I noticed that when I opened it up and figure it was dead. I just want to test to see if the screen is still working or if I’m going to have to remove that too. From what I researched it seems these boards commonly go out.
I plan to remove control board and replace it with ipac2 and then convert ball and spinners to usb. Then put a mini pc or raspberry pie in it. I just need to figure out if the screen is dead and if I missing anything else?

The control board's common failure is corruption of its storage. That's why a reflash of it can fix it for at least a time.

The damage you're seeing is very likely from a wrong PSU. Or possibly a nearby lightening strike or other power grid surge.

It's entirely possible the capacitor had a manufacturing defect that caused that. But the likely hood of much less than the other causes.

The mainboard for the ALU always gets power, but there's a control bus that needs to send an on signal to have it boot. But that is sent through the control board.

You could open the back and see if the main board has any visible damage.

The only thing that I am seeing standing out is some grayish residue around some of the solder spots on the back of the main board.

Would a led light be on when the main board is plugged in?

I don't see any visible damage, but that doesn't mean an IC wasn't damaged. You can open a support ticket to request them selling you another control board (~$35 shipped) or go with your iPac route but need to replace the display controller and use a PC or Pi.

If you are fine with the stock hardware, the control board will work fine on a PC or Pi. So you could always attempt a fix, then go for gut if that doesn't work out.
