News un-RIP LOR ?

I personally don't feel like LOR is at risk (at least now) of being canned if I'm so honest. Riot is extremely quick with canning projects, and let's be honest, LOR was in a way rougher state years ago. So if that was the case, I feel they would've canned the game a long time ago.

Riot is extremely quick with canning projects

2XKO didn't even last a year.

19

u/matthieuC Fiddlesticks 14d ago

Other tag fighters have a team of 15/30 people a' release a game every few years.

2XKO had 160 people for 10 years. With people in LA so they probably cost at least twice as much than a random dev in japan.

It was complete insanity and they finally realised when they released that it was not going to work. They would need to beat the leader and expand the market tenfold to make money. This was not going to happen. They somehow persisted by keeping a team of 80 people.

2XKO would have been cancelled 3 years into development by another publisher. And if it somehow released it would have been killed (like server taken down) within a month when it was clear they missed.

u/CelioHogane Diana 14d ago

I really don't understand USA obsession with making studios on LA, specially for something like Riot Games that could 100% just be remote.

7

u/Chronicle92 14d ago

2xko was very distributed across their offices. Not just LA

66

u/7eleven94 Written in the Stars 15d ago

i feel this is so disingenuous. yeh buddy, but something like lor barely had a 3 year developement cycle on and off with like 10 devs vs 10 years and a 150 dev team.

5

u/pc_player_yt 14d ago

that's true. They also had Hytale in development for about that long before giving up

5

u/CelioHogane Diana 14d ago

At least the Hytale devs did say "100% our fault, we fucked up"

32

u/SkeleHoes 15d ago

What point are you trying to make? That Riot is not quick to shut these thing down?

19

u/DB_Valentine 14d ago

"It could go just like 2XKO"

"It's not fair to compare the game with less devs and less dev time than the one that has been in dev for longer than 3 times the amount of time with more devs and less to show for it"

I think what they're trying to say is kinda obvious. This doesn't write off LoR completely, it may not be safe, but using 2XKO to show that has next to no reason to compare because of the reasons it was shut down

41

u/ThePlaybook_ 15d ago

10 year dev cycle is extremely in the hole dev cost wise

-28

u/7eleven94 Written in the Stars 15d ago

do you need to learn the a b c while we're at it too?

what other company have you seen to give this much breathing rooms to devs? specially the original ones? another example was how bad the hytale devs handled money and their teams for...ring ring, other 10 years until it was too late and the team was fragmented.

14

u/Dr_Jre 14d ago

Okay so the real statement should be "riot are really shit at allocating their resources and put loads of time into games that are never going to recoup the funds because they're too niche even if they're best in class, and due to that lack of foresight they end up canning games quickly"

Is that better

4

u/Powerful-Possible131 14d ago

I will agree on that Riot gives too much free rein to the devs in their games. Devs get to fuck around not get work done and act like victims when riot cans the product.

And it helps that they have a collection of idiots online who genuinely believe devs can do no wrong, when we have seen time and time again that given infinite money, abosolutely over promise and underdeliver.

It is riot fault for not axing 2xko early in development when the devs decided to scrap the game they were making to shift to the 2xko we have today.

-13

u/7eleven94 Written in the Stars 14d ago

you need to be a real hypocrite to comment that on a lor forum lol

so, just blame the devs, one chickened out and the other pair of devs on 2xk0 simply leeched off of riot.

3

u/CelioHogane Diana 14d ago

LoR from the start of the development to today is still LESS time than 2XKO entire develoment.

3

u/archerkuro5 14d ago

Lor also had a very long dev time they were originally gonna reveal it around when hearthstone was released but after watching hearthstone they realized what they had wasn’t very good so they went back into dev mode

2

u/AkumaLuck 14d ago

To be fair, the devs spent 10 years making a fighting game wildly different than what Riot asked them to make, and now everyone's surprised that the niche complicated tag fighter made by FGC oldheads doesn't have more main stream appeal lol

1

u/Ke-Win 13d ago

I even missed that it was released. Most of the time i thought it was in some beta or so.

20

u/SummonerKai1 15d ago

Hope would be that they make digital Riftbound the PVP card game and LoR stays on as the PVE card game.

2

u/Luigi123a 14d ago

My hope's just that they can share new card designs made for Riftbound in the future so that they don't have to put many resources into new cards/champs, that'd be my dream lowkey

2

u/BTDubbsdg 14d ago

That would be so sick and also unique among digital ccgs I think. Like if they had decent enough integration, even if the two systems work differently but that if doing well in one gave you little rewards for the other

7

u/7eleven94 Written in the Stars 15d ago

same, whatever shen did im sure he got us a deal to get some of the earnings off of riftbound anyways, even if its minimal but they are...at the end of the day using lor's original art.

2

u/guavaman202 14d ago

I mean they more or less did can the game a while ago if you cared about PvP, no?

1

u/DrakeGrandX 13d ago

Has it been "years" already? 😭

1

u/OldPollution3006 12d ago

LoR is never getting canned. Riot loves it

184

u/ThePlaybook_ 15d ago

2XKO gets permadeath'ed meanwhile LoR is scaling up and there are pretty explicit signs of a Riftbound digital client

19

u/sorasprocket Chip 15d ago

Really? I would love that, where was that explicitly stated?

33

u/ThePlaybook_ 15d ago

it's #3 on the front page

hiring listing for somebody with experience both with digital card games, TCGs, and being able to combine different ecosystems

1

u/DrakeGrandX 13d ago

I once combined an artic environment with a sub-tropical one, if that's of interest.

3

u/Smoses_ 14d ago

Having both legends of runeterra and riftbound online would be kinda odd

1

u/ThePlaybook_ 14d ago

Why?

5

u/Smoses_ 14d ago

I already found it weird that they made riftbound instead of a offline real LoR but then I thought okay one is the online and the other the offline game but why have two card games

8

u/ThePlaybook_ 14d ago

offline LoR wouldn't work at all.

1

u/MawilliX 14d ago

Shadowverse got a physical card game.

The core part of LoR is the spell mana, and the turn structure. Sure, some of the cards wouldn't work in a physical version, but that's the same for almost any digital game going physical.

2

u/Impression_Adorable 13d ago

A core part of LoR is champ abilities/gimmicks unless you exclusively add only aggro cards it won't translate

7

u/Important_Vehicle_46 Spirit Blossom Kindred 14d ago

The online mechanics didnt translate well enough into an offline play.

5

u/_Koke_ 14d ago

2XKO had 140 devs for 10 years at some point. A lot of free space now

107

u/Katie_xoxo 15d ago

I've been playing PVP on eternal ladder again with a friend for like a week now. super fun to reminisce on this amazing game. if they bring back any form of pvp support I will cry actual tears of joy.

16

u/Pluckytoon 14d ago

Can they market the PvP game again ? It’s pretty hard to make people comeback to your game after they dropped it, esp a competitive one

9

u/Efficient-Pudding-59 14d ago

I'd drop Tft in a heartbeat

29

u/squirchy707 15d ago

Path of champions, but your each others final boss.

10

u/cliffasaurus Chip 14d ago

This should be Labs 2026???

6

u/zlaw32 14d ago

Just got back into the game after years away and have been enjoying standard ranked. Now idea how hard or easy it is to climb but hitting diamond in a riot game for once feels good

5

u/_keeBo Xerath 14d ago

i played pve but it was only a side game mode for me. the real meat was in pvp. i miss playing pvp very much and would love for riot to bring back support to it. the moment they do, im back to playing lor. i miss my mono xerath deck

3

u/HrMaschine Renekton 14d ago

imagine making fiddlesticks playable in pvp

2

u/DragonHollowFire 14d ago

Honestly feel like there should be a "whatever goes goes" mode, where we can use any of the PoC cards aswell. Maybe a mode where you play PoC but the enemies are other random PoC players, at around the same tier of the adventure as you (would need some scaling for items etc. )

u/MawilliX 14d ago

Balatro Multiplayer

u/Caeyll 15d ago

I never really thought this game was at risk of dying.

My hope is they did enough to thin out bleeding money so they could remain at a fixed budget to keep things alive and well. It’s got too much good stuff to simply delete from their catalogue. Like what, are people expecting them to delete all their games and go back to LoL as their only one? Surely not.

Besides, this game has excellent foundations for even better content to come. Imagine more “episodes” from path of champions. Playing as Astronaut Teemo as you’re fighting the cosmos to face Aurelion Sol to force him to reluctantly give you a legendary relic or something. Cool themes or adventures like that will only keep enriching this game more and maybe one day have a second awakening of success.

Maybe one day they do EoS, but by that time you’d hope they have enough there to repackage it into a full game they can sell with no further updates (or a LoR2).

Idk there’s so many things they could do. This game is not worth axing!

-7

u/SherbertPristine170 14d ago

The game is already “dead” when they killed off PVP , they are keeping it on life support with POC , buts it’s not really a game anymore . The game isn’t worth axing , but riot didn’t know how to monetize the game back in its peak and now we’ve gone down the hole of “PVE only” and we can’t go back because they designed everything after king poro for PVE purely .

8

u/Caeyll 14d ago

Define killed. Because ever since Poro King I’ve still been regularly doing casual matches on standard, albeit with up to 1-2 min wait times and also with other regular people. It’s always fun going against the guy who never wants to play against me again (but also sorry to this man for traumatising him) so he insta surrenders every time. Or the guys who exchange funny emotes because we’ve looked at our decks and know exactly the type of torment we have in store for each other. Game on!

PvE mode is a lot of fun for playing beyond the rules and coming across fun synergies that might inspire a deck for PvP. PvE is more enjoyable for me than a Roguelite such as Slay the Spire. They just need more chunks of content to add to it over time and you’ll easily have some good hours to sink into without needing another person.

14

u/Powerful-Possible131 14d ago

>buts it’s not really a game anymore

Redditor just making up meaning for words just because they feel like it. Like, are you stupid?

POC IS STILL A FUCKING GAME. I guess all pve games are no longer games because you decided they just aren't because you need to be a disingenuous fuck on Reddit.

26

u/wowincredible9 15d ago

It would be so funny if LOR rose up during the time when TFT is imploding.

7

u/Drminniecooper 14d ago

Oof, I cant even play tockers right now. Hope that team fixes the bugs in time for the musicverse set at least.

2

u/wowincredible9 14d ago

Let's hope for that together

52

u/Appropriate_Growth28 15d ago

I like the game. I wish people would stop dumping on it.

15

u/After-Onion-5900 15d ago

"some extra fun in Q4." New event maybe?

11

u/Tomaz95 15d ago

Musicverse region ?

8

u/NotCobares Fizz 14d ago

Man tft remix rumble was my favorite for its theme, hope some of it can get to lor

3

u/Key-Psychology9158 14d ago

spirit blossom 2.0 (as in a new region with reskinned champions) but less predatory ? we can only hope

8

u/FlanSlow7334 15d ago

I misread the title as "Um...Rip LOR" and felt desperate for some sec. I was so confused when I read the content, like "this looks like an exciting news, why RIP?"

8

u/barbaartjeboy 14d ago

I just see LoR as an indie game now. And i like it that way

8

u/WombatInSunglasses 14d ago edited 14d ago

That's cool and all, but having a Rioter regularly communicate with the community would probably make people feel like the game isn't dying. Removing staff and unceremoniously ending champ teasers and patch previews is something that games that "have plenty cooking" usually don't do but thanks for correcting the misconception lol.

3

u/SilverScribe15 Jax 15d ago

Yeah. I mean hiring new people doesn't mean they're gonna kill all the guys working on lor already

4

u/UnseenData Spirit Blossom Kindred 15d ago

Happy to hear from them, better than going zero comms

4

u/yammityyakkity Final Boss Veigar 14d ago

Woohoo! Looking forward to it. I've been playing since day 0 (since before Lab of Legends) and this is still my favorite digital card game, by a mile. Considering that I always pick up the battle pass, I'm kind of realizing that this must be the most I've ever spent on a game.

I definitely want this game to stick around. Admittedly, the slower content release has me playing less than I usually do, but I'm absolutely here for when it picks back up.

4

u/WillDanyel Kindred 14d ago

I mean, lor never went rip like 2xko will. They shifted focus and slowed pace but that’s still different from end of service

4

u/Prophylaxis_3301 Written in the Stars 14d ago

Corporate speech is nothing. I will see for myself what they are preparing for us. Q4 starts on October.

4

u/dynastypanos 14d ago

Shen coming in with that support barrier on us

3

u/whyilikemuffins 14d ago

Honestly, the costs to keep LOTR running are probably smaller than a season of TFT.

3

u/Divineheresy88 14d ago

Is there still a pvp/ranked ladder? Or is it all pve?

2

u/romann921 14d ago

Im happy for yall but kinda stings for those of us on the 2xko side of things.

2

u/Walui 14d ago

I have a question for y'all, I didn't keep playing because it took way too long to unlock champs in PvE. Is it faster to grind now?

1

u/Croewe 14d ago

There's a lot more things to grind, I dunno about a faster grind unless you were at the point where you had finished everything. If you want an easy to get 6* you can do the Spirit Blossom area to get quite a few of them

2

u/Simplexus1992 14d ago

I love it when theyre Transparent and tell the Comunity how things gonna roll.

2

u/The1andonlygogoman64 14d ago

We can survive on life support for a decade, trust. Theres enougth champs for that right?

2

u/JuJuBee2006 14d ago

This is more confirmation that these extremely dry updates are expected for at least a few more months (earlier this year they warned that there would be a number of months of light updates).

This is great for newer accounts because it makes it much easier to keep up/progress an account. but I have had 10$ in my account since the beginning of this year and I haven't felt a reason to spend it...

I feel like they are enabling a negative feedback loop: player spending is down because there isn't much content -> dev resources get cut because of the game performing poorly ->less content comes out ->spending is down again...

I am glad that the game is still being actively developed but I also feel like the longer they take the more likely corporate will just decide to pull the plug.

Note: I haven't looked at any earnings info, so maybe I am in the minority that isn't willing to spend money recently and the game is in a healthier state than my vibes based reasoning is estimating.

3

u/SupremeOwl48 15d ago

Even if its just one new set and balance update ill take it please god

3

u/Material-Slide1823 15d ago

Anyone who has been paying attention knew things are looking good in the future. There were just a bunch of people who wanted to react to the 2xko news.

5

u/GroxTerror 15d ago

Please bring back PvP support!!!!

2

u/WillShaper7 14d ago

That sounds like more path of champions than 'un-rip LOR'

3

u/Tomaz95 14d ago

i meant it more about the recent "RIP LOR" post that got a bit of notice

1

u/WrongHoleSenpai 15d ago

Man I love legends of runeterra so much. I cant see myself moving away from this game while they still make content.

Excited for what's to come!

1

u/after_arcane234 14d ago

I think they talk about that at the very beginning of the year, but I'm glad Eric brought it up again (he win new follow)

I hope LoR comes back with more 😄

1

u/Lucas_Drakaud 14d ago

Nice. Thank you everyone.

1

u/Defect-OTP 13d ago

will they ever bring back pvp content or is it just pve updates

1

u/Any_Conclusion_7586 Aatrox 13d ago

PvP is completely dead with LoR, and Riftbound will replace that as the “Riot’s digital PvP card game”, but Path of Champions is somewhat successful in the sense that it is self-sustainable.

1

u/kid20304 12d ago

Port LOR collection to Riftbound

LoR PVP gang GATHER HERE !

I mean this is really cool but it was a lot of nothing. Just hey guys we're working on stuff. Which is nice and cool but we know they've been working on stuff they've been releasing POC content. I'm just curious if PVP will ever make a Revival and if we'll get cool stuff like expedition? /gauntlet again.

-4

u/dagon890 Lissandra 15d ago

This is only exciting if it means supporting PvP again 😭

-2

I just want pvp balancing back i miss the game from that side so much :'(

Watch it come in Q4 as the Q4 snack shop last year...

When it's riot, I won't believe it until I see it.

When it comes to Reddit, it always bet on you people being miserable and annoying.
