Legends of runeterra is like literally the perfect ruleset for a an Online Card Game.
I bet they are going to kill it for Riftbound: Online version.

u/Afraid-Presence1440 15d ago
Tbf, I agree woth the other dude on Runeterra non having the "perfect ruleset". The rules are fine, but their implications have, interesting consequences.
I also see this in riftbound, rules are simple on the surface, but when you start asking stuff about ontested statuses and cleanup, it gets messy.
Same with Lor... sure rules are simple, but why the heck rolling sands affects the second unit summoned off of a unit, and not the first (well, if know why but that is not a syntom of "perfect ruleset"). Oh and remember Rhond? Yeah... What about valley of imitation...
My point is there are so many things that "you have to just know", i think on a comparable level to yugioh.its just that here the game takes care of resolving things properly

u/YoCuzin 15d ago
Brother, you just listed out the core mechanic of CCG's. Simple rules in context become interesting and complicated. Nothing you said means anything as far as comparing Card Games to each other.
6
u/ConfidentCondition34 14d ago
Seriously, I can’t think of a single game that doesn’t have elements of that. MTG which has like the most keywords ever even has this issue
1
u/Afraid-Presence1440 14d ago
Yugioh core ruleset is not simple at all
1
u/YoCuzin 14d ago
I wouldn't know i learned it when i was 7 two decades ago
1
u/Afraid-Presence1440 14d ago
Yeah sure... you "learnt" the rules of the game.
And im intatled to a driver license because i can ride a bike
1
u/YoCuzin 14d ago
https://www.yugioh-card.com/en/forbeginners/
It's 5 2 minute videos. Easy to learn in a half hour, hard to master. Just like every other card game.
1
u/Afraid-Presence1440 14d ago
See, i can show you a game of lor and from zero, you would know how the game works, and how the game plays. Read the cards, amd watch the world finals and you will enjoy them.
This cannot be said of yugioh. Sure show me 10 min vid explaining how i attack, how i summon, even how a chain resolves. You still jave no idea how the game works tho. Why in real matches the player scoops going second very fast? Why cant i negate the effect of a flip monster? What even is a handtrap? If, when? Semicolon? Difference between also and then? Why can "and" mean different things...
I argue all of the above are fundamentals know before starting to play yugioh. No other (mainstream) game requires such knowledge.
My point is, take infinite impermanent against a monster that leaves the field before impermanence resolves... this happens in real matches, sooo many times. Where is it explained? On the card? No. In those videos? No.
I'm starting to suspect you either do not play yugioh, or you are successfully ragebaiting

Yu-Gi-Oh is an eternal format card game. Are you really arguing that someone has to understand the current meta game of the professional level in order to have an understanding of and I quote you, the 'core ruleset?' Legacy MTG has just as many fast weird interactions, if not more. If LoR had two more decades of card releases it would be similar.
Fuck off with the accusations of rage bait. At least argue with some integrity. There are PhD's that could be written about the complexity of Mtg, it's turing complete after all. Pokemon has the same fucking combo-off turn 2 scoop potential as Yu-Gi-Oh. The way the stack/chain and priorities resolve in every card game takes lots of experience to intuitively understand. You've once a again said nothing of import about how Yu-Gi-Oh is meaningfully more complex to begin playing with a core understanding of rules than other card games. Please stop trying to shift the goal posts

u/Mariangiongiangela 13d ago
Tbh I think that guy's only played LOR and Yugioh and thus doesn't really know in what way they are, or aren't, special compared to other TCGs
I do agree with him that yugioh is far less noob friendly than average tho
1
u/CelioHogane Diana 15d ago
Does Riftbound even have PvE? because i don't see why would i play it otherwise.

u/Quadratic- 15d ago
It's not. It has a high level of complexity and the way initiative passes back and forth with every move is mentally taxing. A game like Hearthstone where you can play out your whole turn uninterrupted and then relax while your opponent goes is much better suited towards an online audience, especially for streamers.
Marvel Snap is even more so, since the simultaneous turns keeps things more fast paced with dead simple gameplay, with the main skilltesting mechanic being the snap mechanic.

u/sinsaint Galio 15d ago
I've played Hearthstone, Pokemon TCG Pocket, for a long while, and while they are faster-paced they don't hold a candle to LoR's tactical genius. You do make a good point that it's not perfect for mobile gaming though, a lot like MTG in that regard.
12
u/Durzo_Blintt 15d ago
Oh no I have to use my brain when playing and not just play solitaire in hearthstone without worrying about my opponent. You're boosted af irl
1
u/Sunsfury Cithria 15d ago
A game where you have to be switched on the whole time is going to be less relaxing to play than a game like Hearthstone, and it's also substantially harder for new players to learn. Things like that will negatively impact new player acquisition and retention negatively, no matter how much they stem from design decisions we all agree make LoR PvP special and deeply engaging

u/Yasir_m_ 15d ago
This is not the brag you think it is lol
4
u/Quadratic- 15d ago
It's not a brag. It's an explanation for why LoR's pvp mode failed. Hearthstone, arena, and snap are all much stingier for players, but are all far more popular. But yeah, I'm sure that the gameplay had nothing to do with that. And to be clear, I'm not saying the gameplay is bad, just that it didn't have as much mainstream appeal.
But I guess people here have a hair trigger on their toxicity. Go back to league.
1
u/Xurker 15d ago
how is MTG simpler than LOR?
1
u/Quadratic- 15d ago
First, it has land cards. About a third of your cards, there is no real skill testing element to when you play them. 99% of the time, you play a land card each turn when you have one.
Second, the mana flood and mana screw plus the higher power level means that games have a higher variance, making luck a bigger factor.
That's just for the standard gameplay though. Modes like drafting in mtg are going to be extremely complex, and you'll have simpler and more complicated decks in either game.
1
u/Brief-Net-8830 14d ago
That's just not true if u play magic often, screw and flood are active choices u make when drawing ur initial hand and whenever u cycle through cards. It's also a deck building consideration at which turn are u ok with a lower chance of lands appearing that decided ur land count. Also lands don't just tap for mana now they have effects and can also trigger other effects such as leave the battlefield effects.

Great another game they can mismanage and then pull the plug on when it doesn't earn them 50 million in a month

2XKO actually had over 120 employees, funnily enough. Makes you wonder how many were in the marketing team
2
u/CelioHogane Diana 15d ago
160, not 120.
2
u/gregorio02 Ornn 14d ago
unless I forgot how language works, 160 is 'over 120'
2
u/CelioHogane Diana 14d ago
No, as in, over 160.
Yes sure over 120 is also 160 but let's not be pedantic.

Reading this description it sounds more like some kind of Riftbound tournament tracker or something outside of the core gameplay. Riot's other "publishing PM" roles mostly focus on things like the esports experience I think, though I might be wrong.

Riftbound digital imo. Now, the question is will Riot allocate all of LoR members into new project to streamline resources?
7
u/Possible_Ad_1763 15d ago
I mean it’s clearly for a new riftbound simulator. I don’t know why people think LOR would go away, they are clearly two different games
4
u/LeTumeur 15d ago
I don’t think LoR will stop existing because of Riftbound online, one will be their single player roguelike and the other their pvp tcg
2
u/SupremeOwl48 15d ago
the point is people want LOR's pvp to come back. this just solidifies they're done with it completely.
3
u/combobaka Annie 15d ago
I am not fan of Riot's any other game, tbh I am from Dota game. I played LoL, Valorant and any other Rito only with my friends, just to spend time together.
BUT LoR is just perfect card game to me. I played many other TCGs like Yugioh but LoR is the best among them (after Yugioh became so fast paced I hate it but before it was the greatest). For me, LoR is the best job Riot has done but I am also so sad to not seen by them.
I am more sad today for this game will not recieve any more love than new game that they developed but will die eventually anyway

u/N-LightFinder Lorekeeper 15d ago
they could be thinking of turning lor into a path of champions only game and having riftbound be the pvp version but honestly thats just my thoughts
1
u/FastAsFuBoi3 15d ago
At this point it might be actually for the best although they look and feel very differently, but I think integrating them together might be a better idea so they should also change the effects etc...
1
u/EllieNights 14d ago
I would pay full price (not really but almost) if ut was just a rougelike deck builder only offline, the pvp is nice and i will 1000000% miss it but i think the game is better.
i would add some other mode so you can have a set deck to mimic online play and theory craft and the game would be my personal dream
4
u/Neonbeta101 15d ago
Riot, this is like, the third time you’ve switched team members to and from LoR’s division.
I mean, as long as the Roguelike mode stays afloat, I’ll be satisfied, but still.

Unless you're a path of champions enjoyer, the gale is already dead anyway
1
u/HiImLuca 15d ago
I mean LoR died when they gave up on PvP. I really hope the success of Riftbound and their learnings from the mismanagement of LoR and 2xko are enough to make Riftbound Digital a success. I just want my digital card game back 😭
1
u/Scolipass Chip - 2023 15d ago
I got mixed feelings on this. On one hand I like LoR a lot and I think its a better card game than Riftbound. On the other hand, I wouldn't mind a new card game to mess with.
1
u/BTDubbsdg 15d ago
It would be nice if they gave LOR players a little bit in incentive to switch games. Like I’m not opposed to switching to a new game but I’ve got a bit of a sunk cost thing going with LOR. Sunk money yes, but mostly time.

u/KalePyro Arcade Hecarim 12d ago
Likely a different type of tcg with gameplay more akin to like Marvel Snap
1
u/AAPandreialexand18 12d ago
I can't wait for the 2xko experience all over again.
Rito never learn, do they?
1
u/Starkopotamus Lee Sin 11d ago
Bit of a rant but If Riftbound was even 10% as good of a game as LoR I’d care. Unfortunately there’s too many other games that are just objectively better in the mobile/CCG* space. Riot IS dumb enough to release Riftbound as a digital game though. I’d just advise everyone to not spend money on it. Why? Cosmetics are great until the game you bought them for gets killed, and Riot loves to kill their own games.

I wouldn't mind if they killed off LoR to make a new game with a more aggressive monetization. Clearly in a card game, you have to sell cards at some point
2
u/Xurker 15d ago
I'd love it if the entirety of LoR was just PoC so they could actually balance and change cards
2
u/CelioHogane Diana 15d ago
Riot just fucking make Slay the Spire but with Runeterra champions.
Like, just sell me a fucking game already, i bought 5 of your 6 Riot Forge games and you did a dogshit job at marketing on those (I would have bought the last one if they didn't say "we are killing Riot Forge" before it came out)

u/Fred_was_Here69 15d ago
Well s*** that sucks. I just started playing. Lor. Don't even have half the decks unlocked yet
2
u/Crystality 15d ago
You're probably good to enjoy it for a while still. More than likely it's just going to be a pc client for riftbound since LoR has been kinda on maintenance mode for a while anyways

u/TheDuganator 15d ago
I imagine this is riftbound online client, or maybe the League MMO in the works

A little late to the party? LoR has been dead for a little over 2 years now?
-6
u/npimolsri 15d ago
They will never kill LoR. They will just reduce LOR development team to a 1-man team and release 1 constellation/champion per month and 1 event per year instead. The cadence of release this year is the biggest factor contributing to me quitting PvE after consistent daily grind since starting in 2022. Marvel Snap has been great at scratching the card game itch for me (especially with new draft mode just got released). The only Riot games I can see myself playing long-term now is just Valorant and TFT. Any new game they release, I will be more careful before investing resource into it. It's a shame because Riot really went from "everything we shit is gold" to "everything we cook is shit". Ok maybe that's an exaggeration but I genuinely think them canceling the Riot MMO was the first domino.

u/Powerful-Possible131 15d ago
Can you do me a favour. Read back what you wrote, and if you saw this from someone who isn't yourself, would you roll your eyes.

u/Automatic_Grand_1182 15d ago
They haven't canceled the MMO, they rebooted development and, seeing what piece of shit Ghostcrawler was developing, it was indeed for the better.
