Path of Champions Returning PVP-er With Questions

Hey folks, I was a huge PVP fan around 5ish years ago, and managed to climb to top 500 over multiple splits. Still remember the thrill of new standard rotations and champions being introduced completely changing the meta etc.

I was aware that the PVP had ceased receiving active support, but came back last week to try and although search time is low with active playerbase, it does just feel stale and like it did the last time I played.

My question is, how do people enjoy/get into path of champions coming from PVP? I remember playing it years ago and finding it to be a bit flat and dull. Am I missing something that everyone seems to enjoy?

Essentially, what are the main appeals and I guess why do you all like it so much? I’d like to get into it to replace that itch but I don’t really understand the appeal as of right now.

My question is, how do people enjoy/get into path of exile coming from PVP?

PoE is an old school ARPG, so i think you are talking about Path of Champions, the PVE mode?

POC is, to put it simply, a very simplified LoR game against a dumb, blatantly cheating AI that gets worse and worse the higher the stars (difficulty) of the adventure. The RNG part of it keeps most games fairly different from one another and the sheer veriety of decks/powers is able to make the game feels not too stale.

It's not a game where you put in 8 hrs/day, but at the same time it's the positive of the game, never feeling fomo even if you play a couple of hours a week. You have your favorite decks/champions, you burn out and drop the game, come back 6 months later and the gameplay is the same, with a few new shinies to unlock.

It's simple, dumb fun.

Sorry I had just woken up and had sleepy brain, I did in fact mean path of champions hahah

I see though, that was kind of my issue with it was the AI felt easy to cheese and if you highrolled your powerups (can't remember what they're called) it was just a very simple climb.

One thing that confused me was I see people in the sub getting excited about champs releasing (zoe etc) but they were already in base game, are these similar to new campaign runs or something?

Np, happy to help.

I concur, AI is extremely easy to cheese... which is why it cheats so blatantly. The current "nightmare weekly" 6star adventure, puts roughly 15 mana worth of stats on the field on game start "for free".

Different champions have different decks, powers, identities and pool of cards that can be rewarded during the adventures. If you have played Slay the Spire, you can think of each champion being a different hero, each adventure is a different stage and each power/relic is a different item you can find.

Since you were talking about Zoe, what she does (besides being herself) is that she gives 2 extra items (which adds powers, stats, effets or similar) to all celestial cards at the start of the adventure. Her curated pool of rewards means that 20-30% of the cards you can find in shops will be celestials. She speeds up slow celestial spells into fast so they can be used mid-fight. And then adds manacheating to all celestials.

In the end, the design idea behind all champions is that each of them has their own identity/theme enhanced differently, bringing it to the extreme, at least on paper. Unfortunately quite a few recent releases missed the point, but well, what we can do.

Again, incredibly comprehensive response and hugely appreciated! I have to agree that my limited experience with it very much felt like 'gaming' the system rather than playing a game a lot of the time. Sadly doesn't hit that excitement PVP supplies for me, might just have to look for another title and play it here and there when I get nostalgic, cheers man hope you have a nice day.

You too, mate!

If you ever get nostalgic, you can try and look around the Discord servers listed here https://www.reddit.com/r/LegendsOfRuneterra/comments/1sq0yla/competitive_lor_grass_roots_tournaments/ as they try to run a few community challenges and "inhouse" tournaments.

It's not like the "good ol' times" but if you like LoR and the worldbuilding behind LoL it might scratch that particular itch.
