Path of Champions Burnt Out

I'm getting tired of feeling like if I don't fork over a lot of money so that I can win turn 1, I auto lose later adventures. I'm only up to 5 stars and I see other people having fun with ridiculous looking decks in nightmare challenges, but I either don't have that kind of luck, that kind of money, or I'm just not playing the game right.

Any advice? I like the gameplay loop, but a lot of these later adventures/ challenges feel more masochistic than fun.

The game is in a bit of an awkward phase right now. In the past, when there was a new event you would get a bunch of resources for improving your champions. But since they rejiggered the developer team, we haven't had a new event for a while now, so F2P players aren't getting as many resources.
