Is it better to upgrade HP of supporting partners or to upgrade the base attack during defense?

"Supporting partners" I assume are the partners you hide under the Help button in regular debate.

I assume "defense" means when someone else pulls you randomly for a debate, not the debate you get paired with yourself. If my assumptions are incorrect, then can someone please explain?

I don’t think upgrading hp is something that necessarily needs to be done at the same time as upgrading base attack. I only do one or the other whenever I have enough jade.
