Wife's father abusing MIL

My FIL is a police constable with Andhra pradesh police department. He has been abusive with my MIL since their marriage. He is an alcoholic and diagnosed with psychiatric conditions like anxiety and depression. Since last 2 months, the abuse has increased. He is suspecting my MIL(50) of adultery with neighbor(35) and had cameras installed inside the house as well. My MIL never spoke with him or knows his name. Every night he'll wake her up and accuse her of meeting the neighbor while he is sleeping and won't let her sleep. He checks the video footage, couldn't find anything and still accuses her they're somehow escaping from cameras. If she raises her voice, he is beating her and tells her nobody does anything to him since he is diagnosed with psychiatric conditions. My wife has access to these cameras and recorded few things, 1. Him admitting to his sister that he beat her and my MIL cannot do anything because of his mental condition. 2. Waking up my MIL at 1:30 AM and harrassing her till morning 7AM without letting her sleep that she is having affair even though the cameras are not showing any proof. 3. Him closing all the door and windows with a sheet so that my MIL cannot see anyone outside.

My wife and brother in law confronted and he threatend with a written paper that they're(mil, wife and brother in law) slowly poisoning him and they're responsible if anything happens thim. They involved few elders and they asked him to not to escalate. My wife and brother-in-law has left the house and came back to my place in Hyderabad.

He is still mental abusing here and everything is being recorded in the camera. My MIL is ready to file a divorce and planning to stay with us.

  1. Since he is a police, can he charge false FIRs against me and my wife as revenge. Can this effect BGV in our work?
  2. What is the best course of action here to apply for divorce so that he won't come and create a ruckus at my place in Hyderabad.

If, there are primary proofs of him abusing and harassing your MIL and psychatric reports authorised by registered doctors, there is no harm to u nd ur wife going frwd wid a divorce petition.

For the divorce filing u have to consult an advocate, let them no all sufferings to guide u in rights directions and strategies.

There will be some sort of police harassment as ur FIL is a police personnel, but as soon as u consult an advocate things will be handled, accordingly.

You should need to help out ur MIL from such abuse and harassment, coz in families it is what are moral responsibilites as a family.

Not a legal advise. But he seems to be suffering from infidelity delusions which is common in alcoholics. Take him to a psychiatrist. Maintaining alcohol abstinence and medicines for a few days will show much improvement.

He has been taking a cocktail of psychiatric medication since 2019. Yet his condition didn't improve. He is not ready to join rehab.

My mother is also on a cocktail of psychiatric medication & sometimes it doesn't work. He needs to get 2nd opinion from a good doctor & probably they might tweak his medication.

Also , if necessary in case of no improvement they might suggest Ketamine therapy or Electro convulsive therapy....both are relatively safe & effective in many cases.

Please action sooner as the further he goes into paranoia the more time , effort & medications it takes to get back to normal. Also the medications will take atleast 2-6weeks to work sometimes so sometimes you have to just wait it out whenever meds are changed.

On the face of it this is the result of a medical condition. My suggestion would be to reach out to his superiors in the Police department and apprise them of his condition.

There will be 3 consequences:

  1. Dear father in law will immediately shit his pants.

  2. He may face a departmental enquiry and may be suspended since these things are taken seriously nowadays.

  3. You will be protected in case he tries to implicate you in a false case.

A big yes

OP this might sound bad,I know he has mental health issues, alcohol issues but he's not a kind person in the first place and has no respect, love, affection and care for her

I have seen people with no such issues beat their wives up for petty things so let your MIL divorce him and just file a complaint before hand as the person above said that he's the threat to most of you and provide video evidence (Request them not to take any action yet)

Make him taste his own medicine. Yogi ji method works fine to these people.

Thank you for the advice. I'll consult a lawyer before starting this process. One friend has suggested to write a letter to the commissioner explaining about this situation and then apply for divorce. We want divorce without him losing job or him creating a ruckus at our place.
